Yuki?

Well, I started out a Yukiru fan. I honestly did. But the more I watch the show and read of the manga, the less I like Yuki.

He strikes me as being insincere. And selfish. He tells Tohru that he's nice to people so that they will accept him. That 'confession' colors all his actions. Maybe he's not really nice. He's just acting nice. He's acting the part of "the prince".

Kyo is the total opposite. His heart, his true feelings override his temper and any false pretenses. Making soup, especially leek soup, was NOT something he wanted to do. But he did want Tohru to feel better. So he stole the leeks, got a beating from Yuki for it, made the soup, despite his dislike for the entire exercise, and the feelings of his heart shone through. He cared.

Had Yuki made her he soup, he'd already said, he's nice to people so that they will accept him. It wouldn't have been as big a deal because they were his own leeks and he likes them. AND, we wouldn't have known if he was making her soup so that she would continue being his friend, or if it was because he cared for her as deeply as Kyo's efforts showed.

I don't think I'm explaining it well. But there is a difference. A huge difference between the 2 characters' motivations. Kyo's used to being an outsider, and knows people are not going to accept him. So, he doesn't care what people think, most of the time.

But he does care what Tohru thinks.

Yuki cares what EVERYONE thinks about him (minus Kyo). He wants to be accepted by people. He acts nice to people so that they will accept him. So his efforts regarding Tohru are not distinguished from how he treats others. Any person in Tohru's place, I believe, he would have treated the same way. Whereas I believe with Kyo, he's ONLY that way towards Tohru.

Now. Why do I call him selfish?

The thing that irks me about him more than anything is the episode where Haru tells Tohru about how he came to like Yuki. Haru hated Yuki, the rat, because he blamed the rat for everyone thinking Haru was stupid. So, he confronts Yuki and tells him "I hate the rat! It's all your fault."

And Yuki says "Well, is it true? I didn't think so."

The end result is, Yuki helped Haru let go of his hatred (probably because he wanted Haru to like him), but none-the-less, he was able to do for Haru

what he cannot, will not, refuses to do for Kyo.

If Yuki is so wonderful and nice, why can't he do what he did for Haru and help Kyo let go of his anger towards Yuki?

Why can he do it for Haru and not Kyo?

When I started to think about it like that, I began to really dislike Yuki. Because there's only one reason for him hating Kyo, and that's because Kyo hates him.

Think about it. It was the rat that tricked the cat. The cat didn't do anything to the rat. If you follow the story, and believe each character "is" their zodiac animal, then Kyo has a right to hate Yuki. But the only reason Yuki has to hate Kyo is that Kyo hates him.

But Haru hated Yuki, and Yuki 'forgave' that, helped him get over it, and they became friends.

So, why does Yuki hate Kyo so much?

And why, KNOWING that Kyo will be locked up for the rest of his life if Kyo doesn't beat Yuki, why can't Yuki have a little compassion? Certainly with his own messed up past, he could have some sympathy, but he doesn't.

Kyo is quite obviously envious. And it's that envy that makes him 'hate' Yuki. But deep down, Kyo's the kind of person that would have compassion. I don't think he "hates" Yuki as much as he claims to. No more than he "hates" the rest of the Sohmas or Tohru's friends, or the other people at school.

I just can't like Yuki any more. I don't DISLIKE or hate him. I just have very little respect for his character. And maybe it's because of my change of heart towards Kyo. I'm willing to admit I may be biased about that.

But Kyo's mother committed suicide, and Kyo was BLAMED for it. Yuki was abused by Akito, and his mother doesn't really seem to care much about him. But he's "the rat" in terms of how the Sohmas see him. And his brother, despite their earlier, rocky, start, does care about him.

Yuki's the darling of the Sohma family. Sure, he was locked away as a child, and it must have been traumatic. But Kyo was shut out, too. Shut away by his mother who was afraid of him, and who killed herself; scorned by the rest of the family who, in turn, adore Yuki.

What has Yuki suffered that Kyo hasn't?

Yuki was physically abused by Akito. Kyo suffers his mental/emotional abuse.
Parents that don't love him? Check.
A distant mother a dead mother.
Isolation, check.
Turns into a rat. Turns into a cat. Oh yeah, AND a big, scary monster.


Kyo has a time limit on his freedom and life. And he's going to live it to make the most of what he has. To make every moment count. And stay as long as he can by Tohru's side.

Yuki... Wants people to like him. He decides to be student council president because it's something he didn't really want to do, but would be a challenge for him.

One just seems really superficial to me. And again, I could very well be biased, but that's WHY I don't like Yuki. He seems to me to be very superficial, only concerned with how the world perceives him.

Compared to Kyo who just wants to be with Tohru, the girl he's admitted (to himself) he loves, for as long as he can.

One's concerned about being loved.

The other about giving love.

And that's the difference to me. And that's why I like Kyo so much. And it's why I don't like Yuki.

Sorry to the Yuki fans, here. I'm not bashing him. I'm explaining, reasonably, why I am not a Yuki fan.

Rose: I agree with alot of what you say, but i also only agree to a point. If i didn't just get out of work, i would have liked to go through it and explain my point of view but me minds all jumbled and tired, so i don't think i am capable :-? In any case, when looking at it from that perspective, your opinion is very much true.

Hm, its interesting to read how everyone interpret the characters from what we have seen.

I don't really have a favourite between Kyou and Yuki (although I do tend to have a thing for the silent tormented character in stories )

As far as relationships go though, Kyou and Tohrou seems the like more probable choice and that's largely because from the way Yuki behaves, it seems like he really only see her as a person who can keep the darkness in his heart at bay while he tries to become strong enough to cope with it himself.

Besides, Kyou is just too cute with the way he acts around her! (notice how in the anime, it is Kyou that worries the most that Tohrou misunderstands what he says? if anything, that's a huge indication of how he feels towards her! )

... I don't want to be a spolier but... Yukiru is my favorite >.< even thou I'm pretty sure it will be a 'Kyoru' ending on the manga...

I understand that Yuki's a bit 'centered' about him self since of that event that happened to him when he was little 'being called a freak by other children, tortured and locked away by Akito and most of all being pushed away by Aya [well, also his parents... now, Aya is trying to reach out to Yuki...] Yuki wants to be perfect and so he can be accepted but he hides himself from people 1) because of the curse and 2) his afraid...

But we all know that Yuki let himself 'be' himself around Tohru... When I watched the show, Yuki started to be cold and hard to talk to but when Tohru came along, his eyes is more calm [even thou he got a lot of secrets...] but he slowly let them out, come on, when you get hurt really badly for years... It won't just go away!

Seriously, Kyo needs to find a hobby beside the 'I want to take my place in the Sohma... whatever'
Sure, he was rejected by a lot of people... Been avoided and frightened at because of his true form... again, the 'pain' never go away over night...

The girl has some issue she needs to solve too...
She's very naive and bubbly, slow too...
But she is still my fav. female char beside Kisa and Kagura.
Anyway, her problem is that she cares too much of other people for her own good...
She shows emotions to everyone around her!
She worries about Yuki being 'silent and secretive'
With Kyo 'his problem of not being accepted with the other Sohma'
... She wants a family, it's what she always says 'Movie and Manga'



Honestly, whoever Tohru decide to be with... Someone will get hurt!

xD Nice. I agree with you. On the Kyo-depth analysis part that is. I can't imagine seeing Tohru with Yuki. For whatever odd reason. I've always thought and supported the Kyoru pairing simply because it seems more suited and official than the statured Yukiru pairing.

Hey^_^ Im new here and I just wanted to support Yuki ;p I was a tad upset when i as reading all the hateness going towards Yuki But then i saw that it was from 2004 and it all made sense those of you who hate Yuki because you think him to be self and because of his lack of character development should really check out what has been going on in the recent comics. i think its up to ch. 107 now o_O. Not only will you find that he has changed a great deal ( not just towards people, but even towards Tohru and Kyo...for the better^_^ he even stood up to Akito O_O...got hit over the head with a bottle for it...but still) but you will find more understanding in his character ( well, i did anyways >_<) He even has a love intrest now ( its so cute! Go Machi!!)! anywho, i dont want to rant ( unless you want me to that is ^_~) , but i suggest you find out what's been going on recently before you dicide to hate him^_^ ...gotta find out how to have an icon....o_O
