Hm... the very first fanfiction character I ever created might be counted as a Mary Sue.

I read the entire third Harry Potter book with, in my mind, the daughter of Remus Lupin as a new addition to the Golden Trio. She was in the same year as them and knew all the same spells, but hadn't come to Hogwarts earlier because she was the daughter of a werewolf, and thus, an instant animagus (someone who can turn into a specific animal form at will) and a valuable ally in the battle between Good and Evil. But now that her father couldn't protect and homeschool her anymore, he had to come to Hogwarts, where she instantly befriended the Trio. She served no purpose whatsoever, and had to take over the parts of a bunch of the canon characters to make her 'existence' and quest to find out what horrible faith her mother had suffered, fit.

That was back when I didn't even knew what fanfiction was. That's how desperate I was for a way to vent my creativity and imagination. Fanfiction was a great discovery, but strangely, I never created a Mary Sue for any of my fics since I started writing.
