Mary Sues

Post by AnShino »

don't they just turn you off to a fic? anyway, that's not what the purpose of this thread is, lol. i wanted to ask, what makes a character mary sue? i want to write original fics and i want to make sure my main characters are NOT mary sue. also, i believe all of my fics include (in some way) one (or two...maybe three :-P) orginal character(s).

Gary Stu/Mary Sue = Character inserted into an already created universe (anime, movie, book, videogame, TV show, et cetera) who is better at everything the characters already in that universe do, is loved by everyone (even some of the villians) and, in the sad, unthinkable of event of his/her death, will be mourned forever and ever by every character in the series (good or bad.)

Oh... now I know. :oops: I've heard the term before, knew it carried a negative connotation, but I could never pinpoint a "good" definition of a Mary Sue. Thanks for the links, Calla. They really helped.

The mystery is solved. :lol:

I don't like Mary Sues that are so obviously mary sues. Incorporating yourself in your character is nice, but not all the time!

[quote]So you're scratching your head and wondering who the heck Mary Sue IS, hm? Well, "Mary Sue" is an unkind term used to describe a certain kind of character, a style of writing. She (or he) is created to serve one purpose: wish fulfilment. When a writer invents someone through whom he/she can have fantastic adventures and meet famous people (fictional or real), this character is a Mary Sue. (We don't have a name for the male version -- suggestions?)[\quote]
I got a suggestion for a name of the male version;
Gary Lu? :-P
