Just Try And Leave
He couldn?t do this.
He had the car out front, keys in the ignition, full tank of gas, small bag of clothes in a duffle bag stashed in the trunk, air in the tires, money in the glove compartment.
He scratched his nose, and waited for her to finish working on the last car.
?So?.? He clasped his hands and stood awkwardly, praying for God not to remind him that this is how he stood bashfully before Sister Helen all those times.
But he had killed Sister Helen. So now he was going to make absolute sure he would never do that to Hilde.
?You say something?? She flicked her glance to him casually, and went back to cleaning her wrenches.
She had to work overtime that day on some truck. The two had transformed the salvage business into a mechanic?s haven once the scraps from the war ran out, and they had lived together in productive bliss for at least three years.
They ate out Fridays, Duo held the remote when they watched movies, she did his laundry, they laughed at the same jokes and then made jokes of their own. They had a whole damn a routine.
And Duo was not willing to risk her life just because he felt his life was complete when she made pancakes on Saturday morning.
?Well?? He tried again. He knew the look on his face was less than relaxed, but all he needed to do was stick out the next five minutes and he?d be on the road.
He paused.
He couldn?t do this.
He smiled weakly, even though she was still busy shining her tools, and strode out to the car.
He felt sick as he buckled his seatbelt. He felt so heavy, so cowardly. He couldn?t let her be with someone like him.
He turned the key in the ignition.
The car remained still.
He turned the key in the ignition again.
He looked in the side-view mirror, and saw her leaning calmly against the front door. He looked in the passenger seat, and saw the car battery there in a greased and tangled mess.
He grinned.
That?s when he knew she could handle him well enough.

I love this. It's so cute with just enough humor. Great for Dou and Hilde.
