Shades of the Past: Remembering

It was a cold, lifeless day. The leaves withered like rotting prunes on the trees, but none of them fell. An old, gray-haired man with Prussian blue eyes walked along the streets alone. All the shops were closed, no music played, no kids ran down the street chasing a stray ball they had lost while playing. It was as if all life had withered. The tired man crossed the street and headed to an old cemetery with tall iron fencing that stood proudly although it had long since rusted from needing paint. The grass was dead. There were no flowers. The headstones were crumbling down from need of repair, except for one.

The old man slowly walked to the headstone and with much agony, bent over and reattached a piece had determinedly decided to fall. Once satisfied that the peace would stay, he turned his eyes to the inscription. This was the grave of the woman he would give anything to have back. She gave to others without any regard to her own needs. He felt lucky to have known her for her short life. He felt luckier that she had been his wife.

A traitorous tear appeared in one of the man?s eyes, threatening to fall. He stubbornly rubbed it off. He would not cry. He would not give into a time so different so long ago. He had survived many wars and saw many people senselessly die. He felt pain that overwhelmed him, yet God would not call him and let him die. Once, so long ago, he did not fear death and welcomed it. Then after he met her, he wanted to live for her. But when she died? When she died nothing was the same. He had nothing left to protect. Nothing to believe in. Nothing to fight for.

He placed a rose on her grave and decided that he had visited her long enough today. He did not want to burden her happy life in Heaven. He leaned over and kissed the inscription as he thought of both their wedding day and the day she died. Closing his eyes, he allowed his mind to take in all of the images he saw before him. But as suddenly as he permitted himself to remember, he forced himself to forget. At least for today. As he stumbled away, another old man looked over to the grave. Curious to see who this person was that made this famous old man come see her every day. The inscription read?

?Relena Darlian/Peacraft/Yuy, She gave her life to save us, we are forever grateful.?
