Being Human (Ch1)

Post by greengal48 »

Author?s notes: Heero is a little out-of-character. I?m trying my best to keep him in-character, but I do feel at points I?ve failed. Please don?t let this change your feelings toward the story. I really do believe you will enjoy reading this as much as I have in writing it. Also I have no idea if this should be posted here or in one of the other sections. The reason why I'm asking is because it will have original characters in later chapters and the pairings are mostly with the OCs as well. If ANYONE knows, please tell me.

Disclaimer: I don?t own Gundam Wing. Nor am I making money from publishing this! It?s purely for fun. I do, however, own Lea Zikamo and all the other original characters and plot. Enough said.

Chapter 1: Being Human

?You can?t be serious!? Relena eyed Heero for a moment, trying disparately to read his expression. Despite all the years they had know each other, or the intimate moments shared, she could never tell whether or not he was joking. Heero always seemed to wear only one expression: serious.

She sighed and plopped into her chair. On the other side of her desk sat Heero. On the desk between them sat his resignation from the Preventers. She should have known that this would have happened. He had been searching for a partner, someone other than Duo. Someone he could train as his replacement. He had even said so. But he took his sweet time with the training. It had been a good year and a half since he had announced his intentions. Clive Carter had turned out to be the best soldier ever! Even Zechs was impressed. Which meant Heero was now ready to pack up his bags and leave.

?I need to do this,? he explained. He locked eyes with her, making sure she was paying attention. ?Everyone else has found their? place. I need to find mine.?

Relena thought she heard her heart shatter. True, they had been nothing more than lovers. At the very beginning of their relationship, Heero had said that she shouldn?t become attached to him because he would never feel that way about her. He had felt he was bound to her by his odd sense of honor. One day I will walk away and may never look back, he had said.

Relena nodded. It was all she could do. She didn?t trust her voice at that moment. A dream put in slow motion. That?s what it was like. Heero moved to the door and paused, his back still to her. Look at me, she mentally pleaded.

?Thank you.? He never turned around.

Heero left the room. Relena crossed her arms on the desk, laid her head on them and tried unsuccessfully to staunch the river from her eyes drowning her sleeves.

?Why did she have to look like I was ripping her heart out?? Relena would always be special to him. She taught him so much about being a normal human being. For that he would always be grateful. Yet, he knew that he wasn?t meant for her. Every time they had been together or even attempted being completely romantic, Heero would feel like he was intruding or doing something wrong. Relena had been understanding and patient, hoping that he would come to the same conclusion she had. She felt that they had a future together. For a while there, he thought she was right. It took something drastic to change his mind?

During one of Relena?s trips into space, space pirates attacked them. These weren?t your average, bumbling, run-of-the-mill pirates either. They were focused and organized. Within minutes of their attack, they had Relena and disappeared into the dark starry void. He went after her, of course. He wasn?t worried for her in the way lovers would be. He had witnessed how Duo went crazy when Hilde had gotten into a car crash and was unable to reach her. He was a complete wreck.

Heero wasn?t like that. Even when he found Relena and learned she had been treated poorly he didn?t go ballistic. Instead he got her out of there and to safety. He was relieved when it was over and she was ok, but he felt that he should have been more affectionate to her. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn?t. In the end, Relena was nothing more than a good friend. With that in mind, Heero set out to find his place.

?You?ve become the job,? Duo had told him at one point. ?You?re Mr. Preventer, the first one here and the last to leave? if you ever do. What makes you? you, Heero? I mean? shit man! Do you have a hobby??
A hobby. In other words, do you have a life? The only friends he had were Duo and Relena. He had no hobbies. Hell, he didn?t know what he liked or didn?t like.

?Ladies and gentlemen. We will be arriving at Mars? colony, Mead, in a couple of minutes. Please??

Heero sighed and grabbed his bag. He only brought one, which contained all his belongings. More proof he hadn?t became real yet. He was still a nameless ghost.

Quatre looked up to find a rather distraught Relena frozen in his office doorway. He smiled at her sympathetically, ?He didn?t want to go.?

Heero and Quatre shared a bond that was akin to the bonds twins had. One would know what the other was thinking and feeling. It was brought on by the Wing Zero system. Both of them were perfect for the system in their own rights. Heero had the warrior?s spirit that was needed for combat. Quatre had the compassion and understanding that was needed to focus the warrior?s spirit. Through the Wing Zero System, the bond was made.

?I know,? she whispered. With a tired sigh, Relena crossed the room to a sit on the other side of Quatre?s desk. She rubbed her temples trying to relax. It was a bond that, at times, Relena was jealous of.

In the beginning, it made her furious. She could never break the invisible emotional wall Heero had built around himself. ?That?s why we never worked out.? Yet, God wasn?t without a sense of humor. Just as Relena and Heero figured out they weren?t right for each other, Quatre admitted his feelings for her. Heero wasn?t even slightly miffed at Quatre. He insisted Relena and Quatre give it a try. The two ex-Gundam pilots denied planning the situation, stating that it just felt right. Relena could find no fault in their logic. Quatre was everything she wanted in Heero and more.

?So why am I acting like we just broke up!? Relena frowned, ?I?m sorry, Quatre. I just didn?t expect to feel this way.?

His warm, loving smile never faded. ?I did. He will always hold a special place in your heart, and I will never try to change that. Know this, Relena; Heero will always be there for you.?

A sad laugh bubbled up from Relena. ?Yeah, I know that, too. I guess I?m going to be a little melancholy for a while.?

?I can take your meetings for the rest of the day, if you like. We can work out the rest of the week tonight. You need the rest anyway, Relena. There?s no sense in making this the straw that broke the camel?s back.?

Uncanny. Quatre always knew when Relena was about to break. He would step in and take control until she felt emotionally ready again. Then, without question, he would step back, letting her take center stage. A security blanket with the greatest benefits anyone could ever ask for.

?Ok,? she reluctantly agreed. ?I?ve been meaning to check out that spa Noin has been talking about. But it?s only for a couple of days. Not a week.?

?Of course, my love,? Quatre said. His smile turned into an all-knowing smile. ?Only for a couple of days.?

End of Chapter 1

That?s it so far? just enough to wet your appetite. Once again, please tell me if this should be posted in another section or just keep it here. Chapter 2 will be up as soon as I can finish it and get it beta-ed.

Thank you... 8)
