One Look
When you were little you usually pulled on a girl?s pigtails to say ?I like you." Of course, since you?d never actually say those words, she?d look over at you, glare, maybe call you ?annoying? or ?stupid,? turn away and expect to be done with everything. However, this just means you retaliate back and commence calling her ?mean? or outright deny that the action had ever taken place. The teacher would eventually get involved by seperating the two of you in different corners of the room. Over time you may start teasing each other, hitting each other, making the other person?s lives hell.
And then you grow up.
Sometimes your affection for the person grows with you, sometimes it doesn?t. I just know that everything started on my very first day of school?
I woke up at five AM one September morning knowing that it was a very special day. My first day of Preschool. Needless to say, I was a very excited, very hyped, very annoying little child. My parents were still in bed so I decided to wake them up. Being late for this very important event was not an option.
Prior to this day, I had visited the school on numerous occasions the year before.
I stayed and played with the other preschoolers happy to be able to make new friends and, of course, play with all the cool toys. Another little girl was there visiting once. She was about my age with straight black hair, one blue eye and one red one. It was, by far, the creepiest, coolest, most interesting thing I?d ever seen. Until snack time, of course. For the rest of the day, I was preoccupied with building towers, looking at the pretty picture books, and learning what letters went where in the alphabet. Other visits to the class were uneventful and I didn?t see that little girl again until I started school in September.
That was when I decided to employ ?the method.? At snack time I sat behind her in our long benches and tables. I decided not to do anything. Yet.
Ah the inevitable ?yet.? I let snack time pass by without a hitch. I sat at the boy?s table in my green courderoy pants and blue turtleneck sweater that my mom dressed me in and she sat behind me in a blue-grey jumper, white tights, and a while turtleneck sweater. And pigtails. Her long hair was in pigtails.
I just had to pull them. In my four-year-old mind, that was the only way I could think of to gain her attention and not lose face with my new four-year-old guy friends. So.. before the end of snack time, I pulled her pigtails.
Her fists clenched and she sent a right hook to my jaw so fast I didn?t even know I was on the ground until Jeremy, my new friend, asked, ?Are you okay Evan??
??What happened??
?She punched-ed you.?
?Ohh?? I moaned, touched the tender spot on my jaw, and then promptly passed out. Who knew it would be so painful just trying to get a girl to look over here?
