So, how important is setting in your story? And how do you handle it and blend it with your characters?
Since most of the fanfiction we write are set in far off, distant (and often imaginary) places, I think setting is quite important. We often think of setting in afterthought, but more considerate and careful writers go through the rigors of research to find out more about the place where we put our characters. Many horrible mistakes were made because an author has not paid close attention to setting.
For example, I always get a little shudder of uncertainty when I put "My GOd or Gods," when I write about an anime set in Japan...because though the gods are doubtless important there, I have yet to meet a Japanese who actually uses "My God! or Gods! (Or if you like) Kami-sama!" as an exclamation of disbelief, anger and other emotions.
Do I make sense? Gah...must be lack of sleep...
