It Can't Rain All the Time
Ch.1
Another AerVin fic. I watched Mezzo, ep.2 on anime network and it isnpired me to write this. It starts out a lot like the episode, but expands from there. I like it. I did this all in one night!
I do not own any of the ff7 characters. Square does. Happy?
The rain refused to cease. It had been raining for five days now. It was dragging everybody down, not only rain soaking the city, but their hearts as well.
Aeris cleared her throat and smiled. "Good evening... today is Monday, and it's still raining... It seems that it will keep raining for the next week, as far as we can see. The radar detects a huge rainstorm we are receiving from the north. All I can say is that people are sick of this rain... I know I am..." She gulped. "That's all for your local weather." She shook once. Her boss looked at her. She saw his cruel glance and trembled, getting up from her seat and sprinting for the door.
The man watched her until she disappeared into the hallway, shaking his head. He puffed his cigarette, slowly walking down the hall to find her.
Aeris changed into her casual clothes, and then opened the door to the dressing room, turning for the exit. "Gainsborough!" She froze on hearing her name called. She turned to look at her boss. "Yes... sir?" She replied. "This is the third time. You were good your first week, but now you stink." Aeris bowed her head. "I am sorry sir." She said, frowning. "It's too late for that. I have a pile of resumes for girls just like you sitting on my desk, with forecasting licenses, just like you." Aeris bit her lip. "But, sir, I-"
"It's too late for that. You're fired." Aeris felt tears forming in her eyes, but tried to blink them back. The man stared cruelly at her. "I hope you enjoyed the time you spent here... you'll probably never get a job like this again though." Aeris sobbed, his words angering her more and more. "Now get out of my sight." Aeris bit her lip harder, grabbing her bag and running out the exit.
Aeris arrived at her small appartment and threw her bag and coat down carelessly. Her clothes were drenched, but she paid no heed. She opened her small refrigerator and pulled out some kind of microwave-dinner. "I have to watch what I eat now. I'm out of a job, and no one else will hire me..." She looked at her bird, who eyed her back. The bird was a parakeet, with beautiful blue feathers, odd-colored for a bird of its breed. They looked as if they were slate grey, or almost a blue-jean color. It chirped. Aeris sighed and sat down at her table in the dining/living room. It was a two-room appartment. One room was the living quarters and kitchen, while the other was a bedroom with a tiny bathroom. This was the only place she could find. She wished to find a nicer place, but this had to due for now. "And now, I'm out of a job." She curled up in a ball on the floor and lay on her side. The carpet absorbed the excess water from her clothing. "I'll probably have to pack my things and move back in with mother..." The microwave bleeped, telling Aeris that her food was done. She wearily got up and pulled it out.
She pulled a can of soda from the fridge and sat at her table. She didn't really feel like eating though.
She popped the tab on her soda and turned back to the food, tearing off the plastic sheet. She felt tears in her eyes again. "I don't want to go back to live with mother and father." She hugged her knees to her chest and cried into her wet jeans. "Maybe Cloud can cheer me up..." She picked up her telephone and started dialing his number. A girl answered the phone. "Hello?"
Aeris frowned. "Who... is this?" she asked. "It's Tifa."
"Oh... hello, Tifa..."
"Guess what?"
"What?"
"Cloud just asked me out."
Aeris frowned sadly. "Really?" she said, in a fake cheery tone. "That's nice. You two are a cute couple." she said, tears flowing again. "What's wrong, Aeris? You sound all choked up."
"Well, I lost my job today, that's all!" She slammed the phone down on the receiver and bit her lip. "Great! I got fired, AND the man I love is dating my rival!" She reach to pick up her food, but spilled the cola. "Oh crap!" She reach for a tissue to clean it up and discovered that she only had two left. She bit her lip again. Tears streamed down her miserable face. She got up, and without bothering with an umbralle or a coat, left with her keys, locking the door behind her.
She walked in the direction of the general store.
Upon entering, the casheir gave her a very odd glare. "Miss? Are you okay?" He asked her. She ignored the man and walked on. She picked up three boxes of tissues and headed to the check out. She sat them down and the man rang them up. "That will be four dollars." He said. Aeris stared into space. "Miss? That will be four dollars!" She still stared off into the distance. "ARE YOU DEAF!" Aeris jumped, startled at his comment. She started crying again. "How much?" she asked, through sobs. The man stared dumbfoundedly at her. He felt bad. "Four... dollars." He said. Aeris handed him four ones and left the building. "Now I know why she needs the tissues," Noted the man, with a bit of attitude.
Aeris carried the bag tiredly. It was two miles to the store, in the pouring rain. She spotted an area under a section of a building, held up by columns. She sat down and leaned against one of the columns. She felt fatigued. "Is it true?" A voice asked. Startled, Aeris looked around. "Who's there!" She demanded. She spotted a young man standing at one of the columns, a pained look on his face. He turned to look at her. "Is it true, that it will rain for the next week?" he asked. Aeris frowned. "I only read what they give me... but not anymore... they fired me today." She wiped her tears away. "This rain... I don't think it will ever stop,... Aeris." The man replied. He grunted and held his stomach. "What's the matter?" Aeris asked, a bit scared. "No... it's.. nothing." he said, right before collapsing to the ground. Aeris, stunned, got up to see what was the matter. There was a wound on his side. She frowned. "Oh my god..."
The young man opened his eyes and looked around. He was in some odd place, though he was warm. His side felt better, as though someone had put medicine on it and bandaged it. He saw Aeris near him pouring hot water into a styrofoam cup, a sad look on her face. Aeris noticed that he had awoken and looked at him. "You're up? Are you hungry?" She asked. "Where... am I?"
"You collapsed. I brought you here to my home so I could do something about those wounds." She said. He chuckled. "Heh. That's very kind of you..." Aeris sensed a bit of darkness to his tone and picked up a frying pan. "It's naive, though, to let me come here... for all you know I could be some serial killer, or anything..." Aeris tightened her grip on the frying pan. "Don't even try anything! I'm a loud screamer! I could wake up the whole building if I have to!" He glared at her. "It's too late for that. You already let me into your room... I could do anything now." Aeris's eyes narrowed. "Don't make me hit you..." He chuckled to himself. "I won't do anything... don't worry."
"Are you hungry?" She asked, holding out a cup of noodles for him, still gripping the pan. She was eady to strike any second. He kindly accepted. Aeris sat down at her table, examining him curiously. He was rather handsome, though his pale skin and jet black hair, along with his crimson eyes made him seem a bit evil. "Who are you?" she asked. "No one important..." Aeris glared a bit spitefully at him. "That's really helpful..." she said, frowning. "What is your name atleast?" She asked. "My name... I wasn't named when I was born... I don't actually have one... but the man who took me in as a child called me 'Vincent'." He looked at the ceiling, as if it were the sky. Aeris raised an eyebrow. "Were you an orphan?" she asked. He looked at her and nodded. "My father abandoned my mother, and where I was born, single mothers weren't wanted... she got sick of being taunted about me, so she abandoned me... as my father did her." Aeris frowned. "That's wrong." Vincent looked at her, a bit shocked. "Why would she abandon her own child! She isn't fit to be a mother!"The man frowned after she said it. Aeris bit her lip. "I'm sorry... it's not my place." She bowed her head. "I don't mind." he answered.
A silence fell over them. Aeris still clung to her frying pan and the strange man just sat there, his head down. Aeris felt very nervous with him there. First off, she had never had anyone in her appartment, and she didn't have a clue who he was, and second off, she never had a man in her room. "You know," began Vincent, "... you never changed your clothes... you could get sick." Aeris blushed a bit. "That's none of your business." She replied curtly. "Yours are wet too!"
"That's because I don't have a change of them, at all..."
Aeris frowned. He was winning. "Well, my life sucks anyways, Pneumonia may do me some good." She gripped the pan even tighter. "Pneumonia is never a good thing. I almost died of it when I was a child..." Aeris looked up at him. "and I could have got it again if you didn't bring me here." Aeris's whols face flushed. "Don't push it, buddy. I can kick you out just as quick as I let you in!" Vincent chuckled. "What's so funny!" Aeris demanded.
"You didn't have to bring me here in the first place." Aeris felt her eye twitch. "You're right. I DIDN'T!" She growled. "Do you have a comeback for everything?" She asked. He shrugged. Aeris frowned and put the pan down, picking up a small book. She opened it and began to write something in it, her face seeming sadder and sadder the more she wrote. The man watched her curiously. "What's the matter?" he asked. She started crying again. He jumped slightly, a shocked frown on his face, as if it was something he said or did to her. "I'm sorry, I-" She shook her head. "It's nothing you did..." She bit her lip. "It's that stupid jerk Cloud..."She threw the book down angrily. "I hate him!" Vincent frowned sadly. "Why.. do you hate him?"
"Because I thought he liked me!"
"..."
"I... lost my job today and called him... hoping he could comfort me... and Tifa answered!"
"...what is the problem with that?"
"Because he's dating Tifa! She and I have been rivaling for him for so long, and I... I..."
"Did he... know?"
"YES! He knew very well!"
"Then you don't want anything to do with him... if he would do something like that, then he's not worth it..." Aeris looked up at him, still teary-eyed. "If he doesn't love you back, don't chase him... it will only bring you pain... especially if he's with your rival." Aeris wiped her nose. "Wh... why are you... telling me this?"
He looked up,a bit shocked. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was saying that out loud..." He scratched the back of his head, embarassed. "Why did you tell me that?" He frowned. "Years ago, I loved a woman... but she didn't even notice me... and she fell in love with a man who has caused me many problems..." Aeris frowned. "I just learned to forget her, and after that I felt a lot better." Aeris's face turned red slightly. "Sorry... you didn't have to tell me." There was a silence again.
Vincent stood up in alarm, looking around. He startled Aeris, who looked up at him. "What are you-"
"Shhh..."
Aeris shut her mouth immediately. He listened intently, but why, Aeris had no idea. After a moment, he sat down and sighed in releif. "What was that about?" She asked. "I thought he had found me..." he said. Aeris's eyes widened. "Don't tell me there's somebody after you!"
Vincent stammered. The girl frowned. "Who... is after you?"
"The man I just talked about..."
"Wh...at?"
"The one I said has caused me many problems. I... was running away from him when you found me."
"Is HE the one that wounded you!" Aeris asked, completely shocked. "Yes... he's given me a lot worse things than that wound... trust me." Aeris looked at him sadly. "That's why your left arm has a metal claw?"
He looked at her sadly. "You noticed..." he said, frowning. Aeris blinked. "And that's bad?" He smiled warmly. "I'm still here... you didn't think I was some freak and throw me out..." Aeris's cheeks turned red. "Well, I'm open-minded." she said. "I'm not like other people..." he said, hugging his knees to his chest. :You seem normal to me." Aeris said, smiling at him. "But I'm not. That man... he altered me... he's done so many scientific experiments with my body, I..." Aeris, shocked, stared at him. He looked so innocent the way he was now. He seemed to be happy that she was accepting him. "He's like a kid," she thought. "Thank you, Aeris." Her face turned red. He knew her name, obviously, since she was the weathergirl, but it still startled her a bit. "You are welcome... Vincent." She got up and walked to the stove, putting the frying pan away. He looked at her, as if afraid she was going to hit him with it. She giggled and pulled a mat out, spreading it on the floor. She laid down on it and closed her eyes firmly.
She laid that way, still awake, for about an hour. She opened her eyes and looked at the man, who had fallen asleep. "He's so odd..." she thought. She noticed his necklace. It seemed to be just a blue stone on a string. "I wonder what it is..." She stared at him for a few minutes before falling asleep.
Aeris's eyes cracked open. She looked around. There was no sign of the man from the night before. She sat up, a bit sad, and looked around, even more concerned. "Vincent?" she called, receiving no answer. "Was it all a dream? Or did he leave?" She saw his empty noodle cup and knew that it was no dream. She stood up and poked her head into the other room. "Hello?" She frowned. "Where could he have gone?" She bit her lip. "Did I say something to make him leave?" She blushed, realizing what she had just said. "Oh my god.." she put her hand over her mouth. She put her coat on, then left the appartment. "What am I doing?" She wondered, blushing. "I hardly even know him... he's just some runaway... and I took him in..." She ran until she reach the general store, then turned for the route she took home. She found the area from the previous night. "Vincent?" she called. She frowned. "Are... you here?" She wanered in and looked around. She smiled when she saw a figure in the corner.
She touched the man's shoulder and he looked up. "Oh... you're not him." Aeris's cheeks turned red with ginuine embarassment. "Forgive me... by any chance do you know Vincent?" She asked. The man smiled. "Yeah... he's a real nice young'n, although he looks really creepy..." Aeris smiled. "Do you know where he is?"
"No... I don't know for sure, but he might be at the dock... he goes there to think. I just hope that bastard Hojo doesn't find him..."
"...Hojo?"
"Hojo is the one who gave him that arm. Hojo is the reason he's as sad as he is."
Aeris frowned. "You said, the dock?"
"Mmhm."
"Thank you."
Aeris ran for the port. She reach the docks in ten minutes. "Vincent?" She called, looking around. She bumped into somebody and hit her bottom. "I'm sorry, I'm looking for some-" She looked up. "Vincent!" She smiled and he helped her up. He stared quizically at her. "What are you doing here...?"
"Looking for you!"
"Why?"
She blushed. "I... don't know exactly." He seemed a bit saddened that she saw there. "What's wrong?" She asked him. He frowned as his eyes darted around, looking for something. "Come. Over here." He grabbed her wrist and ran under a concrete pier. Aeris was astounded. "What are you doing?" He looked her straight in the eyes. "Was there a man asking you about me?" Aeris blinked. "What does he look like?"
"He has long black hair, he keeps it back in a tight pony-tail... and his eyes are yellow..." Aeris shook her head. "Aeris... you have to stay away from me... if he finds me, and you're with me... then he'll take you too!" Aeris cocked her head. "What are you talking about?"
"Hojo is looking for me... he's the scientist I told you about."
"Aha. Now I get it."
"This is no joke... if he even knows that you helped me, he'll take you back to the lab... god only knows what he'll do to you..." Aeris's eyes widened. "But, I... you..." Vincent shook his head. "You have to forget me! Please, just..."
"How can I do that?"
"... I don't know... but you have to! If he catches you... he'll hurt you too... like he hurt... her..." Aeris's eyes widened. "What?"
"I've already said too much... just please... go home..." Aeris frowned. "I won't leave you here. You said that professor is trying to find you to torture you again... he has no right!" Vincent shook his head. "I would rather him drag me back there and kill me rather than him drag you back! He's hurt so many people... I'm begging you... PLEASE! GO HOME!"Aeris frowned and turned away. "If you don't want me around, just say it..." she said sadly. He frowned, feeling guilty. "That's not it at all... I just don't want you to end up the way Lucrecia did..."
"Lu... Lucrecia?"
"She was the woman I loved... Hojo... after they married, she had his child, then he used her body for experiments... until she was no more use to him... then he just killed her."
Aeris gasped in awe. "He is a sick... sick man... I don't want him to get to you... so go home... that is all I ask. Please... don't tell anyone you met me... and don't tell anyone about Hojo..." Vincent bowed his head and turned his back to her. "I thank you for your kindness, and all you did for me. I won't forget you."
Aeris felt tears in her eyes. "Good bye..." she said, turning to leave. "Hopefully we can meet again when the rain stops." Aeris turned back to look at him, but he was running in the opposite direction. Her cheeks turned red again. "He had such an affect on me..." she bowed her head and held her hands over her bosom to calm herself. She wanted to cry again. She began her long walk home. Her head was flooded with thought. She wondered why the professor would harm her, and why he was after her new friend. She felt someone tap her on the shoulder and turned around to look at them. She saw a middle-aged man, with dull black hair, and bright yellow eyes. "Is that the man he was talking about!" Aeris wondered. "Miss," he began, "have you seen this man?" He held up a picture. Aeris was shocked to see Vincent, looking rather sad, as he sat in the corner of some white room. Sweat trickled down her forehead. "No..."She gave a fake smile.
"You wouldn't lie to me, would you?"
"...no, sir.."
"Why are you sweating then?"
"Oh, I just jogged along the port. I'm rather exhausted." She giggled slightly. The man didn't seem to find it too amusing, but gave his thanks and headed for the general store. She walked on very slowly until he disappeared. "Should I find him and tell him?" she wondered. She remembered Vincent's desperate face, as he cried, "I just don't want you to end up the way Lucrecia did". Her heart pounded in her chest. She felt drawn to him from the beginning, but she had never imagined anything like this would be happening to her.
"Hey, Aeris!" came a familiar female voice. "Tifa..." she thought, frowning. "What was with the mood swing lastnight?" Aeris frowned and looked at her. "I'm having... a really... bad week." Tifa looked at her. "Well, that's part of life. Suck it up." Aeris cursed in her mind. "If you're just going to criticize me, please go away."
"I'm not here to criticize you, Aeris. I wanted to know who that guy was."
"Which one?"
"What do you mean 'which one', dork? The one who just flashed you the photo."
"Oh. He wondered if I had seen someone... the person in the picture..."
"Have you?" Aeris froze at the question, remembering Vincent's words; "Don't tell anyone about me..." She looked away, frowning. "No. Never."
"Good... fromwhat I could see of the picture he was a real creep." Aeris frowned. "You don't have a clue!" Tifa glared at her oddly. "You do know him, don't you?"
Aeris blushed. "No... it's just that... you're so narrow-minded..."
"I think you liked him or something. You're bright red, Aer! Haha! You like creeps... you're a freak." Aeris stormed away. "I hate you." She said. Tifa kept laughing. "You're pathetic, Aeris. You lose your job, you got dumped yesterday..." Aeris's eyes widened. She turned to look at Tifa. "Dumped?"
"Practically. You LOST, Aeris. Cloud is mine now."
Aeris remembered her friend's words again, "..if he would do something like that, then he's not worth it..." she smiled. "Tifa," Tifa glared at her. "I don't give a damn. You can have him." Tifa's eyes widened. "What?"
"Yes... and please tell him I want nothing to do with him. I don't even want to talk to him anymore." Tifa growled. "You can't do that! No way!" Aeris walked off. "You look at me when I'm talking to you!" the woman continued to walk. "Aeris!"
"Tifa,"
Tifa looked at her. "Please, you should leave me too. I want to be alone. I have better friends than you by far... if all you want from me is a rival, then find a new one. Good riddance." She ran home. Tifa stamped her foot and turned to go back to her own home.
Aeris entered her appartment and closed the door behind her. She felt great, now that she had Cloud and Tifa off her back. She looked at her bird and smiled. "Hello." She got up and opened the cage, and it sat on her finger. She held a few seeds in her palm for it to take. It pecked them one at a time. Aeris then put the bird back in the cage and sat by her table. She rested her head on her arms and sighed tiredly. She could only think about what Vincent said to her earlier. "The professor must be a horrible man..." she thought. "I want him to be safe...but..." She frowned and looked up at the window. The rain still poured. "It won't let up," she said. She stared at the rain, thinking of her poor friend. She didn't know why she felt this way, but she was immensely concerned for him, just like when she first met him. "I hardly know anything about him, but..."
Aeris shook her head and turned on the T.V. She saw the new weathergirl and frowned. "He only fired me so that he could replace me with some cheap bimbo..."
"Tonight, still very rainy, and with a low temp of 34, it's gonna be really cold tomorrow! Not exactly freezing, but only two degrees away from it! You don't want to be out tonight!" Aeris's head perked up and she whimpered. "Oh my god... If the professor makes him run and stay in this kind of weather, then..." She frowned, tears rimming her green eyes. "Oh,Vincent..."
Vincent looked up at the sky, a frown marring his pale lips. He shuddered. It was freezing. Litterally. He had nowhere to go, and no one to turn to. All he wanted was freedom from the professor. He bit his lip to try to stop the shaking, but it was too cold. His damp clothes were freezing, which made it even colder. "Am I going to die?" he wondered. He hugged his knees to his chest. "Atleast it won't be while I'm in his possession..." With that last comment, is eyes closed. All was still.
