You Were Right

Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing, nor anything related to it.
Note: This differentiates from the typically accedped line of events, and plays with a few ideas I've had about one's ability to make major life decisions at a young age, and one's maturity in realizing that.

YOU WERE RIGHT

She smiled. She was so grateful for her children, for a rare free day to spend with them. Tomorrow it was back to the office and the political scheming, but today was for her children. They were so pure and innocent, running though the grass, picking the clover and dandelions, swinging on the swings, and playing tag with their father.

"Mommy, mommy!" A blonde-haired and blue-eyed girl ran up.

"Yes, Adelia?"

"These are for you!"

"Why, they're lovely, darling. Did you pick them yourself?"

"I did! And I can tell you what they are, too! See, these are clovers, and these are dindelums, and these are daisies. The smell funny, but they're so pretty that I put them in there anyway. They're happy, like you!"

"Oh, thank you so much."

"I love you, mommy."

"I love you too, Adelia."

The little blonde ponytail bobbed back toward the swings, where her younger brother was having the time of his two-year-old life.

Relena thought back, briefly, on the past. In her youth the world had been a completely different place - a world of fear, mistrust, and violence. She would never forget the wars of her teenage years, although she had put them behind her. In some ways, the memories were so clear, in others so dim. Her adoptive father's death, her unknown brother's deeds and influence, her birthright, were events that shaped her life, propelled her into politics. Introduced her to her first crush, and to the man who would someday be her husband.

She smiled to herself, a still slightly embarrased at her teenage fancies. She had followed him - Heero, that was his name - halfway across the earth, and to space and back. But he had disappeared without a trace, after the Eve Wars. Like her brother had. Yes, she had moped for a while, but had then realized the futility of such an action, and realized that hers and Heero's so-called 'relationship' had very little basis. She had been young, young in so many ways, while he was old beyond his years because of the trials of his life.

But she had found true love, eventually. And in the office of all places. David Alleghson was an intern, working for a politician younger than he - the young Vice-Foreign Minister Relena Darlian. Their touch-and-go romance had amused the whole office, with flowers in her office, chocolates in her hotel room when she was traveling, impromptu 'dates' to conferences, luncheons, and the occasional 'You've-been-working-too-much-you're-not staying-here-another-minute-and-neither-am-I' outings. It cumulated with a marriage proposal slipped into a stack of documents. Lucky for her she was paying attention that day!

"What's so funny?"

Relena was startled out of her reverie by her husband's voice. "Oh, just remembering how you proposed to me."

David's clear brown eyes twinkled at her. "Oh, yes, you came charging into my cubicle demanding to know what I thought I was doing."

"You pulled out a ring and said you were serious, and said it was the only way to get my attention."

"And you stood there dumbstruck. First time I'd seen you at such a loss for words."

"And you took unfair advantage of the situation and decided to take that as a yes, slip the ring on my finger and kiss me."

"You could have taken it off."

"But I didn't want to."

David pressed hid forehead against his wife's. "Then I was right."

"Yes," Relena whispered, barely heard over their children's playful cries. "You were right."

Further note: Yeah, yeah, I know, it's not HeeroxRelena. So shoot me. Although I'd rather you didn't. But think about it, okay? The story, not shooting me. Please. ~silversong
