Key to Heaven, Chapter 3- The Meeting
"Hiro? Hiro! Hiroji!"
A hand was waving in his face, and Heero looked up to see his friend, Mary-kate, bent down inspecting his face with a worried expression. She had been one of his first friends. She was a cheerful, happy girl who forced Heero to join parties, study groups, and other social gatherings, and helped lower the barrier he'd built up over the years.
"What?" he said sullenly, gathering his books.
"I've been trying to get your attention for the past five minutes. Where did your head float off to, Hiro?" she asked, sitting down beside him on the edge of the fountain which stood in the middle of the college grounds. She was genuinely concerned, and the tips of her fingers caressed his arm. She'd obviously taken a liking to him, and he can see that she wants more from him than friendship. But her gentle touch on his arm, her hopeful, open face...didn't stir a thing in him. He was grateful for her concern and her friendship, but he only wanted to be friends, and he told her so, once...but she hadn't given up her advances, it seems.
Her attempts were futile. There was already a girl...the only one who...
"Hiroji, geez. This is the second time. Did you even hear a single word I just said?"
Heero looked at her. "'Guess what I heard! Tomorrow, at ten, Jack is throwing a party! Isn't that great? It seems it's his birthday...should I get him a present? We'll all go, of course, me, you, Seth, and Gabe...I don't know about Bryce, cos I think he's got a date, but he can always take the girl with him, right? I mean...Hiro, are you listening?'" he quipped, his voice bland. "See. I was listening, MK."
Mary-Kate gaped at him as he recited every word she'd said in the past few minutes, minus the excited chirp in her voice. "You..." she shook her head. "I don't know what to do with you, Hiroji Ando."

Heero gave a small sigh and lugged himself through his hallway. Mary-Kate Morell was a good friend, a great friend, but her obvious attraction to him made him more than a little uncomfortable. And...whenever she smiled at him in that way, or allowed her hand to touch him slightly, his mind would conjure up memories. Memories of Relena, and her soft, passionate voice and her gentle smiles. And he felt horrible.
He glanced at a normal-looking couple sitting casually in the hall, a pile of books between them. The girl gave him a smile, and the man raised his arm in greeting. He nodded in return, and sighed a ltitle. He reached his door and pulled out his key from his bag, and froze. Irritably, he ran a hand through his already-disheveled hair. 'Not again,' he thought, juggling the key in his hand, wondering whether to walk in and pretend to look surprised, or to humor the former pilots and go through his window again. 'I'm not in the mood for Duo's games today,' he thought and pushed open the door in confident resolve.
"Look, you guys have to sto--" Heero looked up, and to his great surprise it was not his four friends who lounged on his cream-colored couch. It was one, solitary figure. It was...
"Hello, Heero," Relena said quietly, standing up. Her eyes were soft and sad, and while her smile was small, but genuine, it had an awkward tilt to it that revealed her uncertainty and nervousness. But then, he realized, it was something that only the people closest to her would notice. "How have...how are you, Heero?"
Heero was frozen in his tracks, his hand still on the doorknob. He wondered, vaguely, if she was real. He must be dreaming...but no, here she was, in his dormitory, speaking to him with that voice. The voice that he'd heard say his name only in his dreams. He took a breath and studied her as she must be studying him. She'd grown, that's for sure.. Fuller now in the right places, and a little taller. Her hair, a little longer than shoulder length, was the color of ebony now. 'As a disguise,' he thought as he took in her artificially green eyes. Even though she was wearing a casual white polo shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans, she still stood with that regal, straight-backed manner with her hands clasped daintily together below her waist. He raised his eyes, and found himself linger on her pink lips, which were frowning slightly now. He looked into her eyes and saw a concerned, questioning look that he realized was different from Mary-Kate's. It was...he couldn't describe it, but he stopped himself when he realized her eyes were more nervous than before. She was obviously wondering why he had stayed so quiet. He forced himself to speak.
"What are you doing here?" He flinched inwardly. It had come out harsher than he'd wanted it to. He hoped she hadn't noticed.
But, alas, she had. Her eyelids fluttered and she wrenched her eyes away from his to look away. "I--" she looked back up at him, not in the eye, though, and said, with a little more confidence, "I wanted to see you. Quatre said you refused to see me...and Heero, I worry about you. So I came to you." She mentally kicked herself for sounding so pathetic and stupid. Where had all those public relations speaking skills gone?
"You shouldn't have," Heero said, looking away as he closed his door. "It's dangerous, going out without your bodyguards."
She tilted her head, regarding him. "No bodyguards? You must have noticed them, sitting out in the hall. Milliardo would have a fit if I was anywhere without at least two."
Heero frowned. Was he losing his touch already? "Rel--"
"Ellie," Relena said quickly. "Ellie Burnham."
"Ellie," he repeated, testing it out on his tongue. "Hiroji Ando," he returned slowly.
"Hiro...Heero, then," she said with a small grin, bowing her head as if they'd only met.
"It's dangerous," he repeated. "You shouldn't be here. Two bodyguards won't do well against a well-trained assassin."
"Like you, Heero?" she said suddenly, her voice edged with anger and sadness. "Why do you--?" She stopped herself, and shook her head. "I'd better get going," she murmured, picking up her casual white purse from the couch. "I came to see if you were really all right. It seems that you are. Please, forgive me for intruding. I...I wasn't thinking at all, coming here. It was a mistake. I'm sorry for disrupting your new life...I shouldn't have come. I promise I'll never come back." She walked briskly around the coffee table and brushed past him, her head bowed and her eyes flooding with crystal tears, hating herself for being weak and crying in front of him.
'You'll lose her, Heero, if you don't stop her now!' a voice in his head blared, and his hand shot out to latch onto her wrist.
"Heero, please," she whispered, freezing in mid-stride, her back to him and their shoulders brushing against each other. She couldn't look up, even though he was facing the opposite way. "You've been trying to run away from your past, and you've found such a wonderful future. It was wrong of me to come and try to bring your past back.. Please, Heero. Let me go."
"Be careful," he found himself saying, watching her look up at him sharply from the edge of his vision.
She hiccuped quietly, and looked at the floor, a small, sad smile grazing her lips. "You don't have to worry about me. Not anymore. You have a new life to live."
"I know you're a strong person, Relena," he said, not looking at her.
"Heero..."
"But don't tell me not to worry about you," he said, turning to look into her eyes. Relena breathed in sharply at the emotions swirling in his Prussian blue eyes, making them sparkle in the dim light. 'He really has changed,' she thought. His hold tightened on her arm. "Because...because I WANT to," he finished, pulling her close, his face inches away.
She blinked and shook her head. "Forgive me," she murmured, pulling her hand free from his grasp. She stepped back and opened his door, ready to step out of the door and out of his life forever.
'No. No!' he thought. "Relena," he said loudly, turning around. She turned her head slightly to the side, and even though her eyes weren't seeing him he knew she was listening. "Coffee. Would you like to go for coffee with me on Saturday? I know a cafe not far from here."
"Coffee," she murmured after a pause, "would be wonderful." And with a swish of her black hair she was gone.

She walked briskly down the hall, her teeth clenched in an attempt to keep her tears at bay, barely noticing the couple scrambling from their spot on the floor. They dusted themselves off and settled into step one in front and one in back of her, their sharp eyes glancing this way and that. They walked even closer to her when they stepped out into the grounds. The man opened the passenger side door to a normal-looking red car and waited until she was safely inside until he and the girl settled themselves in the backseat.
"So...how'd it go, princess?" the American boy on the driver's seat asked her the moment she buckled herself in.
She sniffled and rubbed at her eyes. "I never should have came. I never considered the burden I'd be putting on him, even visiting him for a short while."
Duo put an arm around her shoulders and brought her to him in a hug, like a brother would to a sister. "He loves you, 'Jousan," he said into her hair, serious for once. "Burden or not, he'd gladly go to hell and back for you."
"That's what I'm afraid of, Duo," Relena mumbled, smoothing down her hair.
Duo shook his head, his usual humor returning to his face. "Now stop your crying. I can't stand it when pretty ladies like yourself cry their little eyes out. Makes them look old, you know."
"Duo!" she said, punching him in the arm playfully.
"Hey!" he laughed, then smiled to himself as she turned towards the window and settled into a thoughtful silence.
"He...he asked me to go out for coffee with him this weekend," she murmured softly as Duo revved up the ignition and prepared to make a U-turn.
The braided American looked at her, stunned, but she was still turned towards the window. Then, his face broke into a wide grin and he cheered. "Finally! FINALLY! About time you two went out on a date. Been a long time coming. Can't wait to tell the others!" He spun the steering wheel and went zooming out into the main road.
"Don't worry, 'Jousan," he said to her as they drove along, keeping his eyes on the road. "Everything will be okay." He glanced at her and gave her a wink. He didn't have to turn back to know that she had flashed him a grateful smile.
'Oh, Heero..' she thought, turning back to the window. 'Could there possibly be any room for me in your new life?'

-_-;; Ohh...I'm not as happy with this chapter then I was with the others. But...I hope you guys still enjoyed it. ^_^ Heheh...did anyone notice that little moment from Blind Target? Ironic, isn't it? ^____^ Ho, ho, ho...
As always, comments and criticism welcome. ^_~
