Chapter 8: Night of the Soldier and His Charge

It was already six when the four decided to leave and head home. Aside from Inuyasha, a high school student's life mostly consisted of going to school, flirting, gossip, being cool, some teenage romance, hanging out......and loads of homework.

For Sousuke it was even worse. Aside from all those things, everyday he had to type a report, giving his superiors the details of his mission of protecting Kaname. And Japanese History always seemed to have homework or tests......Sousuke actually had wished that Japan had fought more wars, so that his military mind could have an easier time.

But tonight he had an important thing to do first: make a call to the submarine. He had to speak to his commanders about what he had learned of today. Especially Gauln.

Gauln.

That name alone brought chills to his spine.

An absolute maniac. Just how can he survive again and again when he was facing certain death!? Is that bastard an immortal?

Sousuke went through the procedures of connecting to the TDD-1, asking for Commander Kalinin or Captain Testarossa.

"Urzu-7, is there an emergency? Over." It was Kalinin's calm and stern voice.

"Sir, I do not think so yet, but I have learned of something that had shocked me and I want to see if Mithril knows. I want to confirm. Also, I have a couple questions that I wanted to ask you, Commander, although I know that I may not be qualified for the information."

"Proceed, Sergeant." Kalinin was curious what Sousuke may have known. He was even more curious at what Sousuke may ask him next. What kind of questions are they? What are these questions that the young man considered so important and urgent that he had to patch a call to the Tuatha Da Danaan? Besides, Sousuke called at a good time: Kalinin finished all his meetings and briefings earlier.

"Sir, is it true......that Gauln is still not dead? I have met someone who had encountered Gauln today. It seems impossible."

Kalinin shook just a little. It seemed that no matter what Sousuke did, they would forever be linked to each other, no matter how much one tried to avoid the other. He sighed.

"Yes, Sergeant. He somehow was able to get himself out of the carnage after his Venom self-destructed. He then treaded water for two days before a fishing boat saw and rescued him. It has shocked me as much as it has shocked you." Kalinin was thinking the same thought as Sousuke a couple moments ago. That guy COULD really be an immortal.

"Sir, I may know what Gauln is doing."

"Explain."

"Sir, can I please ask you a question first?"

"Proceed." Ah, one of those curious questions, sergeant?

"Sir, have you ever heard about the Shikon Jewel?"

Kalinin's eyes opened and blinked hard. That was his response for being completely surprised. Only personnel in higher position, such as Captain Testarossa and himself, would know about the jewel. Besides, it was only a hot topic recently. He himself knew only about the basics: about how powerful that item was and how it was actually an item of the past. No one could ever used it unless they travel back in time to find that jewel. Kalinin doubted that technology had become advanced enough as to be able to create a time machine or some sort, so he did not pay much attention to it. However, he would never dispel the notion of the opposite either.

And one thing did bothered him. Why would someone talk about an item of the past so fervently if they could not figure out a way to obtain it? He always feared that there would be someone or some organization whose technological knowledge surpassed Mithril and everyone else, even if it was only for a while. He had a foreboding sense that his fear might come true in this case.

Mithril was only researching on it recently when the hype surrounding about the jewel became too much to ignore. What if some other organization, such as Amalgam, got a head start on it? Or even worse, had already done what they intended to do?

"It is somewhat classified, although it is possible that I can allow you to be an exception. Tell me what you know."

Sousuke told them about Inuyasha and Kagome and their adventures searching for the jewel, and their encounter with Gauln.

Kalinin only nodded in silence as Sousuke went into details. It seemed that Sousuke knew even more than Mithril about the jewel. After all, he had actually met the jewel's new protectors.

The story was getting really interesting. One of the protectors was from this very era, a reincarnation of the previous protector. The jewel allowed the girl to travel back and forth between two times. How she and her partner even managed to get back to the present without the jewel was even more curious, but that did not seem too important for now. It seemed the rumors about the power of the jewel could now be proven. Just one shard could increase one's power tenfolds. What if someone used the entire thing?

And if what Sousuke said was true, that Gauln now had the jewel, whoever he was working for could now have the power to cause massive destruction. However, confirmation of everything was still needed. Of what Gauln was doing. Of the jewel itself, as Mithril had already spent more time researching it. Kalinin knew Sousuke would never lie about such matters, but like any other good detective, proof would be needed before any actions could be ordered.

Kalinin did not realize that he took a long time to think through. It was almost three minutes since Sousuke finished giving his findings. Sousuke finally could not wait any longer. "Sir?"

"Sergeant, I believe you, but I will need further proof on this matter. I have no more to tell you, not even classified information, because surprisingly you seem to know even more than Mithril does. I will speak with Captain Testerossa and Commander Mardukas about the matter. For now, you will once again focus on protecting Miss Chidori. I do hope she is well and that you have not put her into trouble." Kalinin actually managed a small laugh.

"NO SIR!......I......have and will continue to treat her well." Sousuke stammered.

The old man smiled. He finally sounded like someone his age.

"Sir....." Sousuke hesitated a bit. "I'm ashamed to say I have one more question to ask."

"Nothing to be ashamed of. Proceed."

"Does the jewel have anything to do with the Whispered?"

"I do not know, sergeant. My guess is no, but that is my guess. If we do find any linking relationship between the two, you will be informed immediately. Do not worry."

"Thank you, sir. You have been a great help to me today."

"I'm glad, sergeant. That will be it. Over and out." The line went dead.

Sousuke felt relieved after relaying the information to his commander. Kalinin was the closest to a father that he had. Although they simply spoke about important matters in that conversation, it felt as if Kalinin was helping him with his Japanese History homework.

Sousuke also felt that the call was necessary. If Gauln was on the prowl, then it was best that his commanders knew as soon as possible so that Mithril could plan for him or whoever was interested in the jewel. Especially if somehow a Whispered could be involved. Kaname came to mind.

Kaname. Sousuke would protect her with his life, with every ounce of energy that he had in his body. No matter what.

Sousuke looked at his bookbag. Japanese History test tomorrow. He sighed. The textbook should have recorded some of Inuyasha's and Kagome's exploits. More action. More militaristic.

He hoped Kaname could protect him from failing as he walked across the street to her apartment for dinner as promised.

----------------------------------------------------------------

"Sousuke!" Kaname exclaimed gleefully and immediately leapt onto him. She went for his lips. Swish.

"Kaname." Sousuke only smiled at her.

"Sousuke, what took you so long? Even though you are not late, I do wish you can come earlier......I miss you, you know!" Kaname pouted, expecting Sousuke to make it up for her.

"Yes, I spoke with Commander Kalinin, Kaname. About the Shikon Jewel and Gauln. I had a couple questions to ask. It may concern you, Kaname. It was a very productive conversation, however."

"Sousuke......I'm expecting something since you made me pout......"

"What, Kaname?" Sousuke was playing with her. He was getting better at the games.

"SOUS---" Kaname exclaimed, only to stop halfway when her lips could not move anymore. They were stuck against Sousuke's.

They stayed that way for a while. Both were breathless, looked at each other, and smiled. Sousuke was learning to entertain her more and more.

Kaname "Dinner is ready, Sousuke. Come eat!"

Sousuke nodded and moved to the dinner table. Seeing Kaname always made him happier. And her cooking was excellent too. Worry of his Japanese History test was instantly washed away as she joined him.

---------------------------------------------------------------

As they ate, Kaname spoke up. "Sousuke, we have a holiday next week. What should we do? I do have an idea, and I asked Kyouko, Mizuki, Ren, and Shinji already about it. They all liked the idea. If you also agree to it, then I also plan to ask Kagome and Inuyasha."

"Kaname, do what you deem best. What is that idea, though?" Sousuke was always accommodating, but he knew that she already had a plan. He knew better than to ask. It did not matter as long as it allowed him to have some kind of a peaceful spell. Especially from school. Even though he had been in Jindai High for over a year now, he sometimes still found school life much more difficult than fighting Arm Slaves.

Kaname beamed. ?Onsen! For three days!?

?Onsen??

?Yeah, the onsen from last time? With Tessa?? Just the word ?Tessa? annoyed her. That platinum-haired captain always seemed to look for opportunities to steal her boyfriend!

?If Tokiwa and the rest all like the idea, then I have no objection, Kaname.?

?Great!? Kaname smiled.

?I do have one question, Kaname.?

?Huh?? Her smile instantly disappeared. She braced herself for something drastic from her boyfriend.

?The onsen that we went to last time was paid by Mithril because Captain Testarossa was with us. I do know that onsen is not cheap. Quite expensive actually.? Sousuke calculated that only he could afford to spend three days at that onsen. He knew the amount of money that Kaname usually earned from her part-time job and assumed that Tokiwa and the rest had around or less than that for their allowances. They could probably only afford a day at best.

?Sousuke, here comes the good part. Guess what? As a way of thanking you for saving Ayame on our last trip to New York, my father is willing to pay for all of our expenses!? Kaname?s face was clearly a definition of joy.

?Really? That is nice of your father.? He almost added that since he could afford it, he could pay for himself. He did not like being treated to anything for free, but he stopped there in time. He knew THAT would grant him another halisen judgement from Kaname. Besides, he did not want to get on Kaname?s father?s bad side again. Strategically, it WOULD BE better to accept than reject the offer.

?Maybe he is finally fond of you, Sousuke.? Kaname was glad that Sousuke and her father were on relatively good terms now. Now marrying Sousuke could become a reality??she blushed at the very thought.

Sousuke only replied, ?I hope so, Kaname. I will do anything that will make you happy, which includes pleasing your father.?

Kaname almost wanted to cry. She knew he would sacrifice his life for her. Yet his words made her heart melt. She liked the more expressive Sousuke now. It only made her want to love him back more. She held back her tears and looked down at her knees. ?Thank you, Sousuke.? That was all she could mustered.

"We shall go to the onsen, as you and the rest of the people want. You should go make the arrangements tonight, Kaname."

Kaname shook her head. "I already made half the arrangements. I only need to confirm them. So I can do it tomorrow. But as for your Japanese History test......that can't wait, can it?" Kaname had an evil grin.

"Uh......no, Kaname. That cannot wait." Sweat began to form. Kaname quickly congratulated herself on her quick and surprise ambush of Sousuke. The soldier did not even realize that his girlfriend was only trying to play around with him. He definitely was not in the mood for joking and playing around when dealing with Japanese History.

"Until you give me something GREAT, I won't help you!" Kaname now totally have the upper hand. Sousuke is HELPLESS now. She is the MASTER now. He must bow down to her!

"Kaname, you do know that is my worst subject......" Sousuke pleaded. Kaname would not help him tonight? Sweat began to drop onto Sousuke's forehead. He did not know what was "great" enough to give to Kaname so that she would help him. He tried to think and came up with something, but that idea only made him blush. He fidgeted and squirmed in his seat. Sweat fell like water in a river.

"Well?" Kaname stood up and had her hands on her hips. She was enjoying every moment of watching Sousuke sweat. A woman IS harder to deal with than an Arm Slave! Time to learn to please your girl, sergeant.

"Um......" Sousuke continued to try to hide himself, hoping that there was a portable black hole that he could dive into. Sweat fell like water in a waterfall now.

Kaname saw enough of poor Sousuke. She looked at Sousuke and laughed. She relented. "A kiss will be great, Sousuke. Godsend."

Sousuke stodd up, confused. "But we do that all the time, Kaname. I thought you meant something special. I thought you are asking for something even more......uh......" Sousuke blushed.

"Huh?" Kaname quickly figured what Sousuke was implying, and she blushed. She had never done THAT with him before......

Kaname barely managed out the words. "Do......do.......do you......want to......uh.......with me......?" She wondered what Sousuke's response would be. Yes? No? I don't know? Wait a minute! Why did she even ask him THAT? When did she become so daring!?

Sousuke was still tense but replied, "I do not want to hurt you, Kaname. It is OK if you say no."

Kaname knew Sousuke was trying to dodge the corner again. "SOUSUKE!! Is that a yes or no!?" That should do it. She DID want to know, even if it may break her heart.

"Yes, Kaname, of course I want to. You are beautiful and I love you."

"Oh Sousuke......" Kaname smiled. She knew he was being honest. She regained her composure and cool. "I will THINK about it Sousuke. Be sure to pay attention to when I allow you to! And Sousuke, I love you too. But you owe me one thing. Another great thing."

Sousuke started to sweat again. Another great thing? He totally forgot about what Kaname said before.

"SOUSUKE! I AM MAD NOW!" She then pouted for good measure.

Sousuke finally knew what to do. First lesson of "Going out with girls 101": be sure to kiss the girl and apologize numerous times if necessary when she is or on the verge of getting mad. Sousuke knew that this law especially apply to Kaname. At least for Kaname a kiss equalled an apology.

Sousuke finally kissed her. Lips locked for more than three minutes. Finally Kaname let Sousuke go. She was happy. She took out the Japanese History textbook from her bag. "We should start, right? I do want to sleep a little bit earlier today......"

Sousuke looked relieved. Finally, reinforcements and backup are on the way for this mission.

"Yes, Kaname. The sooner we end, the sooner you can go to sleep." This mission could be accomplished, especially with Kaname. He could do anything with her.

"OK, Sousuke! To a perfect score for your test!" She shouted boldly. She grabbed her pen and notebook and quickly took control.

End of Chapter 8

Note: Please look at the poll and give me some opinions (e.g. more action, more comedy, story is good/bad). I want some input since I have many ideas. I hope this story is one smooth ride so far. For those who have read it, I hope you do enjoy it, because I do enjoy writing it.
