It's happened again. For the third time in the same week, he's woken up in a cold sweat, shaking limbs and pounding heart. For the third time in the same week, he's gulped down the fear that's possessed his soul in the few restless hours of sleep, shaking off the anger and resentment at himself, and secretly trying to deny the possible truth behind his dreams.
Heero Yuy never was one to believe in dreams, in fact, he's not a person who dreams much. But lately, closely to one month, nightmares have invaded his mind the moment he settles into bed, producing a thumping headache that has no cure unless he settles his eyes on her.
In his dreams, a mission of sorts, a sniper in Relena's wake. And he's helpless but to watch as the bullet hits her, helpless as he sees her form hit the floor, her eyes wide in their shock, her mouth releasing a piercing scream that shocks him awake.
They're haunting him, with every night, they get livelier and longer. The fears in his heart increasing a thousand fold. How many years have been that's he's been silently wishing after her, protecting her... loving her? More than he cares to remember. And even though she's married, and from what it seems, happy, he still protects her everyday, guarding her, keeping her safe.
He's such a coward. But he's too late. She's taken, he had his opportunity, several for that matter, and he let them all go to waste. Now he had to settle with was he has right now, settle with just being friends because he refused her all those years ago. But even after all these years, it still angered him to see her with him, being led by his arm, smiling up at his face. It should be him with her, to whom all those smiles and 'I love you's' were directed, not to that arrogant, conceited rich guy the world thought was enough for her. Because he wasn't. He didn't risk his life for her, he didn't fight with her when she needed support, and he wasn't with her when she finally broke down.
He was so full of resentment, even if he didn't have the right to feel that way. He was a coward.
And all these nightmares were just clear proving of his destiny. Of his mission. For even though he had lost her, even though she had moved on, her welfare will forever come first. He will follow her till the end of the world, as her friend, her bodyguard, or just as a stranger, because he had a self-oath to fulfill. She was his number one priority, and will always be.
Even if it meant protecting her from her own husband.
The dreams were crystal clear in his mind, her voice still ringing through his ears? the sniper?s face like a Polaroid in his memory. The man and his wicked smile, his haunted, crazed eyes wide as they aimed at the politician. Would the man really be capable of doing such an atrocious thing? Well, he?s been witness to cruder things.
But still?
He just couldn?t ignore a dream like that. In the past, they were just fleeting images and sounds, but his dream tonight had seemed clearer, especially as the sniper?s face was revealed. It had to count for something.
And just when he rose from his bed, intent on going to his adjoining bathroom to splash his face with cold water, his vid-com rang an incoming message, making him groan in annoyance.
Afterwards, he would wish he had never woken up that day, and never answered that stupid call. Trowa Barton?s face had been pinched and cold, and yet his eyes held such pain and mournful hesitation that made Heero?s heart constrict in fear.
His words rang in his head, echoing off the walls and concealing in his brain.
?Relena?s been shot.?

Author?s note: I know this is plain and very shallow because I didn?t give Relena?s husband a motive, I didn?t say who he was, and I ended it before anything really happened? but you have to give me a break! Lol! As I was writing this, I got this urge to turn this into a big one-shot, but thought better not. I?ll consider that later. Wanted to submit something for the challenge, you see. ^^;

Nooooooooooooo ::stops for breath:: oooooooooooooo!!!!!
Evil husband! Evil, evil husband! :evil:
You packed a lot of emotion into such few words, Andrea. Good for you (I couldn't do it to save my life).
I would, however, like to see you write that longer one-shot. Is she really dead? Why did her husband do it? What's really going on here?
Poor Heero.
He feels all guilty.
It stands well as it is, very mysterious, but now you've piqued my curiosity. I must know.
Loved it.

The Importance of Tomorrow:
The clarity of the hindsight we obtain from a new day may be 20/20, but it provides us with biased knowledge of the experiences and emotions that were-- Not what could have been, if only we had the chance to look through those premonitory eyes.

Oh no!...Heero must be reunited with Relena AT ONCE!!!...heh..
...and who's that rich-guy snob? What could Relena possibly see in him to even consider marriage?...
This story warrants a sequel!!!!....You've captured my attention and now, I just wanna read more so as to find out what's really going on....
..Keep writing (if that's possible at all)
