Crossovers, Good or Bad?

Post by Weaver Atropos »

Generally speaking, when I come across a fic that warns it as being a 'Crossover' I tend to back away. I'm very hesitant about crossovers. I think that, a lot of times, people assume that, because two worlds are too different (think Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam Wing Crossover, for example) their characters wouldn't mesh and/or seem realistic if placed together. This, like a lot of things out there, can go both ways.

I read a Crossover fic once, it was a Weiss Kreuz/FAKE crossover. And, while I was a bit unsure about reading it, I was surprised when I did. The plot was great, the characterizations accurate, and the idea of the characters getting together wasn't too farfetched (not that there'd be anything wrong with that; sometimes the best stories are the ones that are the least expected). Excited by the new developments, i decided to go read another one. Bad luck.

This one was a Weiss Kreuz/Gundam Wing Crossover. I supposed I wouldn't be too scandalized--the two series have similar plots/characters. But the writing was horrible. They made Heero out to be a murderer for money (which, I find unlikely) and Duo into Youji's moral-lacking bed-buddy. *shrugs* I usually don't mind if the writers take liberties with the characters, but this one tweaked me in the wrong way.

So, should I have given up on Crossovers? Like everything else, I think that a Crossover (like a fic) can only be as good as your preferences and the author permits. Give everything a chance.

It all depends on the two series that are involved. Some work well while others royally stink, even though people keep writeing about them anyway. Sailor Moon with DBZ and also with GW are big hits seemingly, yet I have yet to see a decient fic out of either catagory. I have reciently gotten into a Teen Titans/Yu Yu Hakusho saga that is quite good. The main link between the two is the demon attraction between Hiei and Raven, which causes them to be drawn to each other and mate. The main villan, Raven's father Trigon shows up and tries to take over the spirit world of YYH and Yuske and co. need some help and turn to the Titans. The Titans, with the help of a rejuvinated Genkai develop spirit powers of their own. It gets good dispite the melding of worlds.
Anyway like I said it all depends on how well the worlds blend together. Note that although SM and GW don't mix well, SM and G Gundam could in theory work out, with a skilled author at the helm.

That's true. Especially considering that G Gundam characters (some of them at least) aethetically resemble those in SM. Not only that, but the color schemes match, too. ^_^ I can't very well see Gundam Wing's melancholic colors with Sailor Moon's vivid reds and yellows. Good point

really? i wanna read it...PM meeh a link please?

anyway, i tend to shy away from crossovers, but ive been thinking about giving them a try. no offense to anyone but, the ones i tend to avoid are the ones that jumble up a bunch of seemingly randon shows together. idk...it kinda just...annoys me. but as i sed, i just avoid them and have nothing against them =). besides, i think those are just for humor and such so...eya =P. i haven't really some across a more serious one tho...
