Helpful hints on how to restart?

Post by Penybright »

I started writing fanfics a long time ago... There are quite a few of them out there that I haven't finished *winces* I'm sure there a few readers out there who want to hurt me for my slacking too. But anyway... Anybody have any helpful hints on how to pick writing back up again after you've been gone from it for about a year?

For me, It helped to re watch the series again, and re-reading the previous work. I also read similar stories to get the "feel" again.

What I AVOID was other genres are stories. I got distracted by FMP! and wrote myself into a block.

At also helps that you are not going through stuff in the real world that would distract you, like moving, divorce, break-ups and the like. Especially if the story ISN'T about that.

I hope that helps. :salute:

^_^ I actually tried restarting a story I wrote a while back. It was nearly impossible. I cringed everytime I read what I had written and kept shoving it away after re-reading the first few lines. Things only really worked for me when I decided to rewrite the story from scratch, keeping the original plot and some dialogue, but reworking it entirely into a new fic. I was surprised at the result. it was a story that was genuinely different from what it had started out to be, but I liked it. *shrugs* But don't force yourself to rewrite something unless you really 'feel' it. Otherwise, it'll just come out feeling stiff and unloved.

It's weird, but true.
