The Reason [songfic]

AN: Hmm... my very first 1 X R fic. This shall be interesting in that I haven't seen but 8 episodes of GW (working on it!), and my beta reader has no idea that I wrote this, at 3AM, nonetheless. =D Oh well-- enjoy the fic!

Characters do not belong to me, although I wished Trowa did. <begins daydreaming> Oh yeah!-- disclaimer-- nor does the song "The Reason" by Hoobastank belong to me either.

"The Reason"



Hearing the sounds of birds cooing outside her window, Relena lazily opened up an eye and immediately squinted at the blinding sunlight.

Feeling the sun soak her bones, the half-asleep girl turned her head over to the other side and felt the warmth disappear from her.

He was gone. Again.

She should have expected it by now, but she hoped that every night he did come, he would be there in the morning.

Her vision, speckled with white dots from the glaring sun, now began to see multiple dots, blurred, each dot running into another.

Breathing deeply, Relena forced herself to calm down and not cry, like she did every other morning.

Blinking her eyes to force any water from spilling forth, she spotted a plain, pristine white envelop lying on the pillow.

Curious, Relena stretched her hand over to grasp the rectangular object. On the outside, the envelop read in simple, block capital letters: Turn on the radio.

Now confused, Relena swung her legs over the side of the bed and made her way to the radio.

She turned on the radio and headed towards the kitchen to prepare some breakfast and some strong coffee.

She was in the midst of placing her bagel into the toaster, when the d.j. on the radio announced, ?And this next song is dedicated to Relena!?

Her hands released the breakfast item, as it dropped onto the floor, rolling several feet away.

Turning around slowly, Relena heard the first measure of a guitar playing before the singer began the lyrics:


I?m not a perfect person
As many things I wish I didn?t do


A perfect person? What on earth... then realization struck her. Perhaps not a perfect person?but a perfect soldier. It had to be from Heero.. as her eyes widened from her deduction. She walked closer to the radio, as if she was in a trance, paying even closer attention to the lyrics.


But I continue learning


Here, Relena had to suppress a smile.. Heero, admitting that he was always learning new things?


I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go


Say what.. she silently psyched herself out. Please... don?t leave me...


That I just want you to know
I?ve found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you


She gave an inward smile. She had always hoped she was helping Heero in some way or another. Yet, she didn?t want Heero to change necessarily from who he was. More so, she just wanted him to tell her that he loved her. That he wouldn?t leave her. Biting her lower lip, she walked even closer to the radio, waiting to hear the next verse.


I?m sorry that I hurt you
It?s something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through


The tears from earlier, began to flow like rain drops, gliding down a windowpane. She hadn?t expected an admission as personal as this, especially from him. She sat in front of the radio, letting the tears cascade onto her cheeks, clasping her hands in her lap and waiting for the radio to reveal more.


I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That?s why I need you to hear

I?ve found a reason for me....


Relena jerked her head. What exactly did that mean? She replayed the lyrics in her head: I?m not a perfect person... I wish that I could take it all away.. and be the one who catches all your tears? She silently dichotomized a list in her head. Either Heero was indirectly declaring his love for her.. or as close as an admission he would allow himself to give... Or... he was apologizing for everything and thought leaving her was the best solution...

Damn him for always thinking like that. Thinking that she was too good for anybody-- too good for him. She let herself sob uncontrollably, letting the tears rack her slender frame.

Too engrossed in her own tears, she didn?t hear a knock on her door.

Rubbing her eyes to push the tears away them, she felt someone?s fingers delicately wipe the remaining drops from her cheek. Even in her watery vision, she could see a pair of Prussian blue eyes, piercing into her own. Allowing tears to fall again, this time, accompanied with a smile, she leaned into his embrace and heard in the background:


I?ve found a reason to show
A side of me you didn?t know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you.

Thanks guys for the responses. =) I realized when I was walking home, I completely forgot to write in this one scene.. oh well. =) Maybe I'll do a rewrite of the fic, with the other ending I was toying with.. Anyway, thanks for the nice comments. =D
