Ever happen to you?

Post by Mellie »

You're sitting down at your computer, a fresh word processing page in front of you. You have a title, you have a middle, you have an awesome ending. But you know what? You have no i8dea how to start.

Yeah, that's the way it goes with my writing. I used to write all the time, start with a piece of crap start and end off decently. Now with barely any time for writing (it sucks) I have no time to know where to start that makes my fics interesting so people actually want to read my endings.

Sound familiar? If so how did you over come it? I am dying to know. Any suggestions appreciated.

I can't help you, but I know how you feel.
I have this story that has been sitting in my mind for 4 years but I can't get the beginning right. :(
The middle & ending is fine but I keep re-writing & re-re-writing the beginning.
Good luck  with yours, I'm not giving up on mine.

I know the feeling. Hmmm....I seem to have some tips here. I'll post them as soon as I find them.

Funny thing is, I'm the exact opposite. I start off great, writing like a mad-woman... and as the story progresses, I end up writing two-sentences paragraphs, as opposed to my 200 word paragraphs... It's... frustrating. I always have trouble concluding a fic. Especially when it's a fic everyone seems to like... the fear of not meeting expectations... *sigh*

Let's hope Mel finds those tips, I could definitely use them.

Dear g*d. I have the exact same problem as Andrea.
Only in my case, I have the whole story in my head (character, plot, the works) but as I'm working on each new chapter, life decides to gibe me sh*t and I have to postpone.
Then by the time I get back to writing, it's like starting all over. *sighs*
Oh well.
It's back to listening to my angst/drama muse...

Same here! I have the whole plot ready. IN FACT, when I come up with an idea, I write it down in flashcards. Right now, I have about 5 flashcards, all with different ideas. First paragraph, main plot, and conclusion... different thing is... concluding.... Ah, Faere, you know what I mean... *extremely confused trying to explain her ideas* :-?

My problem is getting everything down pat, even the characters and the plot. My two main problems are 1. not knowing what to put in between and 2. PROCRASTINATION.

I have about 6 original stories in my head right now, but I haven't finished even ONE. But I put the plot summary in my compy, so I don't forget what I've come up with.

The best advice I can come up with is reading more stories to know a bit on how to get off to a good start in your story, and observing things that happen in your life, cause you might get to apply it on your story. Then again, this adivice is from a VERY amateur writer, so advice can be taken or thrown. :D

Okay, so I've been thinking about this thing. And for my College Prep Grammar course we have to learn all these techniques for writing from the Adios Strunk and White book. And one section is called Time Warping. You take one part, decide the event that helped to shape it (One prior but not necessarily the event that immediately preceeded the event you just stated). SO I think this will help for my beginning problem. Now if I could just find time.

If anyone else has any suggestions, feel free to post. I'd love to hear them.

Strunk and White, "Elements of Style". Ah, english requirements.

No hints though. I have problems enough doing ANYTHING with my writing. I can develop pretty spectacular plots in my head, but trying to get them down on paper (or screen) is difficult for me. I've been trying this whole 'outlining' concept (how revolutionary) but I can never even get far planning.

Since you have a middle and ending... ever try starting your story from the middle or "end" and turning the beginning into a later part of the story?
