Inevitably Predictable [6/?]

AN: This chapter picks up from Chapter 3. The cliffhanger being: Kagome enters present day Japan, emerging from the well, and finds Inuyasha, waiting for her. So, everything that happens from now on is what is happening now. No more flashbacks. (Or so I think! ;D)

So, I lied. I was going to post this on Sunday, but since I had it already done, and you guys left me the *best* reviews any writer could have hope for, I'm posting this early. (Not to mention, I'm more motivated to write the next chapter. ;D) Thanks again for everyone?s encouragement. You guys really, really make my day. I love getting emails, regarding that someone has posted a reply to a chapter. I love you guys! =D

As always, love and thanks to my wonderful beta reader who always finds time to edit my story, even when she has tons of work, screaming at her. =)

Chapter 6 - Just Believe

?Inuyasha...?? Kagome whispered.

?Kagome....I...? the half demon murmered.

Holding her breath, Kagome waited to hear what Inuyasha had to say.

?I?ve been waiting forever! And I?m hungry. And, why the hell would I run now, that I?ve waited for so long?? And you never answered my question either! Why the hell do you stink of that wolf?? Sniffing the air deeply around him, Inuyasha also began again, when he caught sight of Kagome?s clothes. Startled at what he saw, he began to rant again. ?AND WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WEARING????

Kagome looked down at her clothes. Slapping her forehead with her good hand, she had forgotten she was wearing the dress that Kouga had given her. Before she had time to begin explaining, Inuyasha started up again.

?No wonder why you smell! C?mon! Answer me!? Grabbing her wrist, Inuyasha twisted Kagome towards him.

?You?re hurting my wrist! Let go!? The girl struggled to get away from the half demon?s grasp.

?Not until you answer my questions! Why have you been with that wimpy wolf? Why haven?t you been home? Why are you wearing that dress? Why is he scent all over you?? Inuyasha stopped his spiel, for a sudden realization popped into his head. ?ARE YOU TWO MATING!??

If the poor girl wasn?t so tired, and if she wasn?t so pissed at Inuyasha then for holding her captive, she might have laughed at that last statement. So, the half-demon idiot was jealous. Jealous of Kouga. Jealous of whatever might have happened between her and the wolf.

?Look, if you let go, I?ll tell you.? Kagome compromised. She knew Inuyasha wasn?t going to relent, until he heard all he wanted to hear.

Eyeing Kagome, the half-demon reluctantly let go. When had Kagome not promised to do what she said she would do?

Taking a deep breath, Kagome began her tale. ?Yes, I helped Kouga because his brothers were really sick. He didn?t know what to do, so I went with him to figure out what was wrong. And now, I?m back to get some supplies, so they?ll feel better. As for the dress, Kouga gave it to me because my school uniform was really messed up. It wouldn?t be safe for me to wear dirty clothes and get sick too.

?And no, we are not mating.? Kagome decided to leave out the part that Kouga had kissed her. If Inuyasha was that upset at just the thought of the two being together, how would he react if he knew that Kouga had kissed her? Besides, she was never one to kiss and tell, and furthermore, it wasn?t Inuyasha?s business to know who was kissing her! Not like he claimed her!

Inuyasha stared at Kagome. She seemed to be telling the truth. I?ll let her off the hook. As for Kouga, the half demon thought, I?ll kill him the next time I see him.

?Feh!? he replied. ?As long as you?re not helping him find the jewel shards. And I might as well wait for you to get ready, since I?ve already waited so long anyway. Like hell, I would leave without you anyway. I gotta make sure you?ll come back and not run off. Come on?let?s go.? Inuyasha grabbed Kagome?s hand and pulled her onto his back.

Kagome knew that rant was Inuyasha?s way of apologizing. In any other instance, the understanding girl would have accepted the apology and even think it was cute how Inuyasha tried. However, the past twenty-four hours had given Kagome a new perspective on things. She made no attempt to understand the opposite sex, especially where Inuyasha was concerned, but after spending time with Kouga, Kagome refused to accept anything less than she wanted?than she deserved. If Kouga could apologize, why couldn?t Inuyasha? More importantly, why should she always be the one to apologize and give? Frankly, she was tired of giving and never receiving, albeit, Inuyasha did show some affection on his part a few nights ago. But, she was tired of all action, and no words. She wanted to hear from Inuyasha?s lips that he cared for her. She didn?t want to infer anymore. In fact, she told herself?she shouldn?t have to. Her mind made up, she told the half demon, ?Put me down.?

?What?? Inuyasha snorted the reply in disbelief.

In a firmer voice, Kagome reiterated her command, ?Put me down.?

?Yeah, whatever.?

?I said, put me down! SIT, boy, SIT!?

CRASH!!!

?I?m not something that you can pick up and discard at your will! I?m not someone you can order around and expect to do your bidding. Yes, I did say I was going to help you with finding the jewel shards, and I still plan to. But, I know I mean something more to you. Or am I just a bothersome annoyance you?re only using to find the jewel shards, and once that?s done, you?ll never think of me again? I?m tired of this, Inuyasha. Talk to me. Tell me how you feel. I can?t keep living on this hope, if it?s in vain. I?m going to walk to the house?by myself. I?ll be back in a few hours; I promise. Do whatever you want. Just don?t... don?t come into the house. I don?t want to see you until I come step foot out of my home.?

?But??

?NO! Just.. just stay away from me, Inuyasha..? Resignedly, the girl walked towards her home, her body hunched over from pure physical and emotional pain she?d endured.

?At last?I am HOME.? Kagome sunk herself onto her bed, setting her alarm to wake up in an hour.

Sneaking around the corners of the home, Inuyasha sniffed the air. Not smelling Kagome in the vicinity, Inuyasha stealthily walked into the kitchen. He almost yelped as he ran into Kagome?s mom. Mrs. Higurashi, on the other hand, gave Inuyasha a beaming smile and patted his ears.

?Hi Inuyasha!? The mom cheerfully greeted the surprised half-demon. ?I bet you?re hungry! I know you?ve been hanging around for hours! I made some ramen?would you like---?

Before she could finish her sentence, Inuyasha had seated himself, stuffing himself with the delicious noodles.

?Oh my! You must have been hungry! So, Inuyasha, what?s going on with you and Kagome? Have you finally kissed her yet?? the older woman asked casually.

Choking on a noodle, Inuyasha looked at Mrs. Higurashi, who was calm, as if her question was a simple, common courtesy question as ?how?s it going??.

?Whaaa?? the half demon asked, flabbergasted.

?Oh, I know you two are in love with each other! I?m just wondering when you?ll finally kiss her! You?re spilling your noodles, Inuyasha!? the mother, slightly scolding the confused demon, wiped up the soup from the table.

The half-demon stared, open mouthed at the older woman.

?Well, come on! Spit out the answer!?

?Um.. ?

?Um, what? Speak a little louder! I can?t hear your mumbling!?

?Um... yeah... we have... But that?s it! We?ve only kissed, I swear!? Beads of sweat were starting to form around Inuyasha?s forehead.

?Well, it?s about time! I was starting to think you were never going to get the nerve! Kagome must be so happy!?

?Right.. happy...? the half demon muttered.

?You know- she did seem upset when she came home. I?m assuming you two had a fight? Let me guess. Kagome wants you to admit that you care for her, more than just someone who finds jewel shards for you. And you do?you?re just not sure how. Not to mention, you don?t want to feel like you?re betraying that other girl.. what?s her name.. Kikyou??

Once again, Inuyasha stared, open mouthed at the perceptive woman, sitting in front of him. ?How the hell did you know all that??

Mrs. Higurashi chuckled. ?Call it intuition. Do you want to talk about it??

Frowning, Inuyasha didn?t even know where to begin.

?I see. So, that Miroku guy gave you some advice? About commitment, hmmm? And girls always wanting more? Obviously, that guy doesn?t get around much. He has no clue as to what he?s talking about. Perhaps, he does, in the girls he meets, but not in Kagome?s case. Simply put?Kagome just wants to hear that you really care for her. She knows that you do, or at least, she hopes you do, but it?s not the same as hearing it. She?s not asking for the stars and the moon because that?s not what she wants. She just wants you.? Kagome?s mother heavily emphasized the last sentence. ?As for Kikyou... she might have been your first love, and you?ll always love her, but that doesn?t mean, you aren?t allowed to love Kagome. It is okay to love more than one person.? Mrs. Higurashi thought to herself, I shouldn?t press him any further. This is already enough information for him to absorb. I really want to tell him that Kikyou might be his first love, but Kagome could be his true love...
?Hmm...? the half demon sat, lost in thought. He had no idea what to think. Everything Kagome?s mother said made perfect sense. And in his heart, he knew that everything she said, he already knew.

?Look,? Mrs. Higurashi began, placing her hand on Inuyasha?s forearm. ?Just talk to her. Tell her how you feel. Be honest with her. And everything will work itself out.? Standing up, the mother went towards the pantry to grab some supplies for Kagome to take back with her. She stole a glance at the half-demon, who still sat at the table, his face between his hands, staring into space, mulling things over.

?Mom? Where are you? Do you know where the medi----Ahhhh!? Kagome skidded in her tracks, when she saw Inuyasha, lounging at the kitchen table. ?What are you doing here!? Didn?t I tell you to wait outside the house??? The surprised girl was suddenly becoming very angry.

?Now, now, Kagome. Is that any way to treat a guest? Inuyasha was hungry, so I fed him. And now, he?s just waiting around to help you carry your stuff; that?s all. And yes, the medicine is in the closet.? Mrs. Higurashi assured her.

?Really? He?s waiting to help carry the stuff?? Kagome sounded dubious.

?Yeah! What?s wrong with that? Feh!? The half-demon shot a look at Kagome.

?Right....? the girl said slowly. Turning around, she said, ? Mom, can you give Inuyasha all the stuff to carry then? I need to grab the medicine, and then I?ll be going again.? Kagome ran out of the room.

?Sure thing, sweetie.? Mrs. Higuarshi loaded up all the supplies in Inuyasha?s arms. She was still piling stuff into the half-demon?s arms when Kagome came back with the medicine.

?Mom! Did you pack all this chicken noodle soup in my bag???

?Well, you said, those two guys over there were sick! And there?s no other cure for the common cold and flu than some good chicken soup!? Kagome?s mom smiled cheerfully. ?Inuyasha, you?re such a good helper! Now, be careful, not to drop any of this stuff!? She pinched the dog demon?s ears and let out a small giggle. ?Your ears are so adorable!?

?Oh brother,? Inuyasha muttered. ?Let?s go.? Ducking from Mrs. Higurashi?s itching fingers, the half-demon gave a small nod and walked towards the well.

Giving her mom a hug, Kagome whispered into her ear, ?Thanks for everything, mom.?

?Don?t worry, sweetie. Everything always works out for the best. Just believe.?

Walking behind the red-clad demon, Kagome stared at his back. She had no idea how she was going to approach Inuyasha. What am I supposed to do? Just go up and say, ?So, Inuyasha?do you like me?? Right?that would be so smooth! Oh brother. Should I write him a note? ?Inuyasha, do you like me? Please check the ?yes? or ?no? box. Thanks!? Kagome! the poor girl rebuked herself. Oh Mom?how am I supposed to do this?
Luckily for her, Inuyasha made the first move. He stopped suddenly, causing Kagome to crash into him, for she was too absorbed in her thoughts to notice that Inuyasha had stopped walking. This little run-in then caused the half-demon to drop his packages everywhere.

?Geez, Kagome! You could watch where you?re going!? Inuyasha yelled. He looked Kagome in the eye, and he noticed that tears were starting to form. ?Oh shit. Don?t cry. I didn?t mean it. C?mon! Don?t cry! What is up with you humans and crying? Geez, stop!?

Kagome couldn?t stop crying. All the feelings and emotions she?d been holding in gushed open as a flood rushes over a dam.

The crying girl felt a finger tenderly wipe away her tears. Opening her eyes, she came into close contact with Inuyasha?s face. ?Hey.. I said, don?t cry,? the half-demon softly admonished.

Sniffing, Kagome responded, ?Why have you been avoiding me??

Inuyasha sighed. He stood up, grabbed Kagome?s hand, and helped her up. Holding her hand still, he picked up the packages with his other hand. ?Let?s talk about it while we go back. We?ve been gone for a while. The others will start to worry.?

As they were traveling in the well, Inuyasha took a deep breath and began. ?I?m sorry if I?ve hurt you, Kagome. I didn?t mean to avoid you. I just needed time to figure things out. Look at it, my way. You appear out of nowhere and ruin the Shikon Jewel. Plus, you?re the reincarnation of Kikyou?the woman I love and hate. You obviously embodied none of her traits. Hell, you couldn?t shoot at your target, if your life depended on it. To me, you seemed like an annoying human, with no real talent for anything, except seeing the Shikon Jewel.

?But?then, I realized that you weren?t Kikyou. You?re Kagome. You care about others: Shippou, even when he?s annoying; Miroku, though he?s a pervert; and Sango, although she can be distant. Even when I fuck up all the time, you still forgive me and come back. Kagome, I??

His mouth was stopped by Kagome?s lips. She gave him a hard kiss, to which he responded back with pent up frustration over the past days. The two were so involved, they didn?t even hear the oncoming footsteps.

?Well, well. What are you doing, kissing my woman, dog-face??

Kagome and Inuyasha turned towards the voice at the top of the well.

I do "love" the way you leave cliff-hangers. I do hope you will be continuing this story, and soon, or else I'll be loosing sleep, which is kinda not good because of school, and stuff. So, yeah... I'm babbling, so I'll be stopping now, anyways...

Oh boy-- things will be in store between Kouga and Inuyasha; Inuyasha and Kagome; and Inuyasha and Kouga. And not necessarily in that order. ;D

Katy: I'm sorry you'll be losing sleep. Will it help that I'm also losing sleep too? ;D Here is the scoop for the next chapter-- I'm in the midst of exam hell week, so I won't be able to update until that's over. BUT-- I promise to have that chapter out in a few days. I'm aiming for the 20th, but it might be earlier, depending on how inspired I get to write. So yes-- so you'll be losing sleep for a couple of weeks. ;D

Pilot03: Quite an evil laugh there. ;D Yes-- you can happily chant, "fight, fight, fight!" Although I've never really written a full fledge fight scene.. should be interesting. But lots of fun action in store! =D

Miss Relena: LOL-- I couldn't agree with you more! I am a fan of I/K pairing-- so we'll see what's in store for the next chapter. Indeed-- what will the wolf do? I do have a nice part written for him in the last chapter.. mwa ha ha! ;D

Wow! Alright, I just typed up the rest of the story, as of 3:30 AM! =D Right now, I just send the draft to my beta reader, who will determine how to break up the remaining story. (Might be two chapters-- might be one chapter and an epilogue.) So, this Friday, if not before, I'll have the next chapter posted.

Kaili: I must have those cliffhangers! I gotta have something to bring people back to read this! =D I promise-- the cliffhangers shall be ending soon. ;D

Kanya: Thanks so much for your review! =D I was a little nervous in that I was worrying I had made the characters a bit OOC. (Don't know why.. just overly paranoid.) So, that made my day! =D LOL-- wouldn't it be a perfect world, if she could have both? (Or mine.. anyway.. ;D) But alas-- she will choose one. =)

dark-angel: I'm posting as fast as I can! After my exams were over on Monday, I stayed up all night, writing the story. I stayed up, despite being bleary eyed, to conclude the story, as I did promise to have it done this month. =) The next chapter will be up shortly!

Anyway, lovely chapter as always and oh look! Another cliffhanger! What a surprise! Aw, I'm just teasing. Man, staying up until 3:30 to finish the next chappie. That's dedication right there!

So let's see...ahhh, Kagome's mom. Gotta love her.

Yeah, go her for talking some sense into that boy--er--half demon!

And on another note: Damn! I'm so glad there is fanfiction...in your story Inu and Kagome have kissed a blissful who knows how many times while I am still waiting for a normal kiss from them in the series. (Like just a half-demon Inu and Kagome kiss) I mean, you know when they finally go at it you won't be able to tear them apart-- they have some serious pent up passion goin' on there.

Okies...can't wait for the next chappie! Yay for finishing exams!! Wheee!
