All's Fair in Love and War (6/9)

Post by athena »

Hello!!

If you're all still with me, here's the next chapter. 7 should be up soon..its done and will soon be with my beta. (thanks to her again!)

Disclaimer..I don't own Gundam Wing..or Shirley Temples or Mai Tai's (sorry..I thought it would be funny for Heero to order one). And the post-it-note comes shamelessly from Dirk Gently, by Douglas Adams. Probably nobody's read it but oh well.

Enjoy!!

Chapter Six

Deep under a pile of folders, Relena?s brows furrowed as she struggled to understand the gist of the documents. Outside the sun was shining, and here she was in her office doing paperwork. Groaning, she grabbed her water bottle and downed an aspirin. ?This headache?s killing me...?

Ring. Ring.

Relena stared at the phone, willing it explode. When it didn?t, she picked it up.

?Hello??

Milliardo took this moment to walk inside her office. Relena looked up, and greeted him with a short nod.

?Yes, Senator. I understand completely. Er.. no. I don?t think that I can pay for your campaign??

Relena gestured to Milliardo to take a seat by flailing her arms around wildly. He stared at her. Putting her hand over the receiver, she hissed, ?Sit!?

?What? Oh, sorry. Of course I stand by your causes?NRA? Sir, I?m a pacifist..?

Milliardo quirked at his sister, amused. She glared at him. Grabbing a post-it-note, she scribbled something down and handed it to him.

?Er.. long story, really. No, I?d rather not tell you.?

Milliardo glanced down at the note. ?Tell secretary to get a newspaper.? He blinked, and scribbled ?You haven?t got a secretary.? He passed it back.

?Er.. no, no comment.? Relena looked down at the note, and considered this for a while. She wrote, ?Damn!?

?Senator Matthews, really. Of course I?d love to help you, but its not really in my best interest right now...?

Milliardo smirked. He wrote ?I?ll get one?, and passed it back.

Relena glanced it over. ?Oh! Mrs. Matthews. Yes, it?s a pleasure..? She scribbled furiously ?I couldn?t possibly, that would be most kind.?

She handed it to Milliardo to read it, she had scribbled ?Get money from secretary.?

?Err.. Mrs. Matthews.. I?m really very busy as Vice Foreign Minister.?

He pointed to the note that said ?You haven?t got a secretary?.

?No, I like my job.. thank you.? She ticked the note ?I couldn?t possibly, that would be most kind.?

He glowered at her, and walked out of her office.

Before the door shut, the last thing he heard was ?No, he can?t have it?? He sneered at the comment.

Returning a few minutes later with the newspaper, he dropped it down in front of her.

?Thanks, Milliardo. I?m sorry about all that. Can you believe it? That?s the second person asking for my job!? She pouted. ?I?m not dead yet.?

Smiling, he sat down. ?People are fickle. Don?t let it get to you.?

Beaming at him, she replied, ?So, what brings you to my lovely office??

?A certain Mr. Davis, who is a representative from the Eastern Hemisphere, I believe, has been calling me repeatedly. Trying to reach you, but seems you don?t answer your phone.?

Gasping, Relena checked her messages. She smacked her head. ?Yep, ten messages from him.?
?I?m really sorry. I was very busy last night.? Relena tried to say this with a semi-straight face.

?Indeed,? Milliardo retorted. ?In any case, you have a meeting with him tonight.?

Sighing, she nodded. ?Just tell me where I have to be, and when.?

Relena stepped out of her limo, newspaper in hand, as she made her way into the restaurant. Her eyes browse the headlines, looking for what she needed.

She snickered, and then caught herself. The headline, read ?Third representative to take personal leave.? ?Death isn?t funny, Relena.?

?Hmm.. but that means the police haven?t tipped off the press yet.?

Casting suspicious glances around her, Relena donned a pair of sunglasses. She told her brother, she bought them to ?avoid more publicity? but as well to complete her look.

Wearing another black dress, she completed her alter ego: Secret Agent Relena. ?Okay, I maybe I could use a better title,? she grimaced.

She tossed the newspaper in the trash, and headed towards her seat. Seating there already was the infamous Nathan Davis. As she walked closer, however, she had a sneaking suspicion she had seen him before. His hat, covering his eyes, sat on unruly brown hair.

Relena stretched out a hand. ?Good evening, Mr. Davis.?

A hand reached out to shake hers. She remained smiling until she felt his hand. Stifling a gasp, she recoiled.

Swallowing the large lump in her throat, Relena sighed. ?Hello, Heero.? At this, ?Mr. Davis? stirred.

Removing his hat, Prussian colored eyes stared back at her. ?Minister Darlian,? he stated, ?please have a seat.?

She did, and stared at him in confusion. With a look of fear, the waitress approached.

Avoiding eye contact, ?What can I get for you?? she managed.

Heero glared nevertheless. ?A Mai Tai for me, and a Shirley Temple for her.? Relena gawked at him.

Her fist clenched as the waitress wrote them down, and hurried off. ?Who does he think he is, ordering for me? And a non-alcoholic drink, no less!?

Heero fell silent. The drinks came quickly, and the waitress didn?t stay to take any other orders, fearing the mysterious man in black and the girl with an evil glare in her eyes.

Taking a sip, she eyed him carefully. She cleared her throat, and he looked up irritated.

?Where is Mr. Davis?? she asked with a malicious undertone.

?He couldn?t make it.?

Relena raised her eyebrow. ?Ah, so you came in his place.?

This caught him off guard. After a few moments, he said, ?It?s none of your concern why I?m here.? He looked down at his untouched glass.

Relena fumed and hissed, ?Did you kill him??

Heero looked startled, and stuttered something along the lines of ?err. no..?

?Indeed."

Suddenly Relena?s drink splashed into his face, a stray cherry attaching itself to his hair.

?Good evening, Mr. Davis.? Relena sneered, and walked out of the restaurant.

?Hey, I paid for that!? came his infuriated reply.

The dark streets were empty, except for a livid figure that?s shadow appeared every few blocks under street lamps.

Kicking rocks, Heero thought of some appalling ways to get his revenge. After all, he had to kill her anyway.

So caught up in his evil thoughts, Heero Yuy, the perfect soldier, didn?t see it coming. The bullet pierced his left side, he didn?t have time to react. Wincing and trying to apply pressure to the bleeding wound, he barely caught sight of the attackers.

?Figures, Davis? own henchmen. .?

Collapsing onto the pavement, he leaned up against a newspaper stand. He tried to stop the blood, but failed miserably.

A warm hand pressed on his left side. Looking up, his hazy eyes met long blonde hair.

She frowned at him. ?You have too many enemies.? Tearing the end of her dress, she wrapped it around his abdomen.

He just stared at her in amazement. ?I thought you already left.? He grimaced as she tightened the makeshift bandage.

?I had unfinished business,? she replied, giving him a half smile. Standing up, she offered her hand. ?Come on.?

He didn?t look up for a few heartbeats, but allowed himself to be brought to his feet. She led him inside of her limo.

?Take us to the hospital, Pagan.?

As they started off, Heero murmured under his breath, ? I can handle it. I don?t need to go to the hospital.?

Raising her eyebrow, she whispered, ?I think you do.?

He closed his eyes, and fell into her lap. ?Oh. Alright then.?
"The point is, you see," said Ford, "that there is no point in driving yourself mad to stop yourself going mad. You might just as well give in and save your sanity for later."

We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing - Beyond the Sea
