Becoming ? Chapter 9
A/N: For those of you who read the first couple of chapter and were confused by Heero's actions - this chapter explains it. I would never ever think he would do such a thing. So please, give this a chance and go back and read. I think you might be surprised. This chapter is the end. (Author suddenly looks stunned.) There is a reference to the rape in Chapter 1 and a couple of deaths.
As always, your input is greatly appreciated...

Relena awoke suddenly and found herself in a dark room. The only light was from an alarm clock that constantly flashed 12:00 at her. Sighing, she wondered what time it really was. Obviously it was before six because the sun hadn?t come up yet.
Heero had left her a few hours ago to return to the base. Part of her wanted to talk to him, but she knew he probably wasn?t ready yet. Besides, he had to return to the base to keep from arousing suspicion. He would see that all of the people at that base who wanted to hurt her would be taken care of. What really remained to be seen was how he did it.
Although she had no idea why he had disappeared from her that night so long ago or why he lost his memory, she had always known that he would never purposely betray her. There was a logical explanation for everything and he would tell her when he was ready. Until then, she would stay as close to him as possible, for no matter what happened, she loved him.
Relena was so lost in her thoughts that she almost didn?t hear a slight click come from the corner of her room or feel a sudden shift in the air. Startled, she looked over to where she thought the disturbance came from to find darkness. She wasn?t afraid.
She heard a slight click before light blinded her vision for a second. In the corner was an old man who looked strangely familiar. His hair formed several small and scattered patches on his head and his crinkled face showed little of his eyes. He wore the same kind of uniform as Heero, so she assumed this was someone from the base. But how had they found her, especially so quickly?
Standing beside the old man was a beautiful girl, maybe a year or two older than her. Her copper hair cascaded in waves down the sides of her body. Her bright green eyes sinisterly glared at her. She also was wearing the same kind of uniform.
The old man spoke first. Rising out of his chair, ?Relena Peacecraft, so we meet again.?
?I?m sorry but do I know you??
?You don?t remember me?? he mocked at her while holding his gun up to the light, as if examining it. Relena chose to say nothing.
?Relena, I?m surprised at you. I had you trapped and was posed to take over the Earth Sphere until that damn pilot showed up.?
Relena?s eyes widened in recognition and then slightly narrowed as she stated, ?Dekim Barton.?
He met her gaze with a triumphant one of his. ?I believe it is about time that I finished you off Relena Peacecraft.?
The woman beside him took out her gun at this statement and aimed for Relena?s head. An obvious look of enjoyment spread across her face. Barton had other ideas, however, and placed his hand over the gun, pushing it down.
?No, Maya. The pleasure of killing her is all mine.?
Relena?s head snapped in recognition at that name. It was the same one that she had heard earlier talking to Heero. The same one that the other pilots talked about him and her and ? it hurt too much to think any further. Maya was beautiful; she had that perfect kind of body that men drooled at.
Barton lowered his gun slowly, waiting to see a look of panic on her face, but found none. If holding a gun to her head didn?t work, he had alternative ideas about how to torture her.
?You know,? he slyly began, ?It took us months to break Heero Yuy. We almost gave up.? Barton stepped to her slowly; gun still cocked at her head. Step by step, he continued his story.
?As much as we beat him, starved him, and injected drugs into him, he wouldn?t forget about you. He remembered you long after he couldn?t even remember his own name. So we decided if he was going to remember you, he might as well remember it as the woman who helped kill his beloved wife.? He had almost reached her now.
?We thought we had succeeded. But we didn?t know that you had secretly married before we took him away from you. All this time, everyone thought you were married to Quatre. Little did we know that when we sent him that night to rape you, that it might bring back memories. We just thought it would be a cruel joke to the pampered princess who has stalked this man for so long.?
Relena looked up at them surprised. She could see Barton?s eyes now, sparkling with anticipation and knowledge. Only a few steps further and he would reach her. Maya had remained in the corner, but openly glared at her with what could only be hatred.
He leaned over and ran the gun down the length of her arm. ?But you liked it. We saw you. We watched what you did tonight too. Actually, we tapped it. So, after your death, when the world still thinks you are married to Quatre, they are going to receive a very graphic video of Relena Peacecraft willingly fucking an assassin. The best part is,? he paused, leaning over to one of her ears and dropping his voice, ?No one ? not your beloved pilot or Quatre will be alive to defend you. They are both being taken care of at this minute.?
Relena gasped at this statement, more concerned about Quatre and Heero than herself. Her eyes darted around the room, looking for some sort of escape. She had to get to Heero and warn him or try to help him.
?What do you want from me?? Relena questioned in a firm voice.
?Want from you? That may have been an option After Colony 196, but now my dear, now you have no options but to die. Oh, and by the way, if you will notice, there is a small camera over there,? he motioned to the table next to the chair he had been sitting in, ?I can?t think of a better way to hurt Heero than by forcing him to watch your own painful death.? Slowly the gun moved from her head to her heart.
?Get away from her!? A voice snarled and then a body hurled itself across the room at Barton.
?Heero! We had captured you! How did you escape?? Barton said in disbelief.
He slapped the gun away from Relena?s heart and pried it away from Barton?s hands. Leveling it down to Barton?s head, he answered, ?There all dead. Never underestimate your opponent, Barton. Oh, by the way, your little plans for Quatre have also failed.?
Before Relena could object, Heero fired the gun against Barton?s skull. In horror, Relena saw Barton?s eyes roll into his skull and his mouth open, but no words come out. Brilliant flashes of oozing blood gushed and splattered from his head, covering his face and rolling down his neck. Barton sank to his knees; the last thing he saw was Heero?s glare, cold and unflinching. His body finished its descent to the floor with a heavy thump.
Heero?s gaze then turned to his last opponent, Maya. However, in his satisfaction to see this man suffer for the horrible things he had done to Relena, he had neglected to watch Maya as carefully as he should of. Maya had moved around the corners of the room swiftly and now had Relena by the throat, strangling her.
?Maya, let her go,? he demanded.
?No, damn you, I?m going to kill her.?
Even as Relena was gasping for air, she noted how shrill and desperate Maya?s voice sounded.
This time, Heero said more firmly, eyes narrowing, menacingly, ?Let her go.?
?No,? she screamed. Maya had tears running down her face, rage contorting her features. ?If it wasn?t for her?I?could?have gotten you?to love me.?
Her tears seemed to suddenly stop. A hopeful look gleamed in her eyes as she stared at Heero after her confession. She was so lost in the moment, waiting for what he would say, that she involuntarily lightened the grip on Relena?s throat.
Heero stepped toward them, allowing no expressions to register in his eyes or his face. Strings of copper hair clung to Maya?s wet cheeks. Looking at him, ?If you will tell me you love me, I?ll let her live. Tell her how much you liked screwing me!?
A firm voice replied, ?No.?
?Damn it!? Maya?s hands once again tightened around Relena?s throat, causing Relena to gasp in pain. ?Don?t you understand that I?ll kill her!?!?
Heero had been slowly inching his way to them, he was only a couple of feet away now.
?Maya,? he began slowly. She perked up eagerly, waiting to hear him say it. She knew that she had won - he would back down. After all, in seconds Relena would be dead. But she wanted her to hear this before she killed her. And yes, she would kill her. Then somehow, she?d brainwash him again, making him think that she was his wife.
Lost in her thoughts, she missed the sudden flash in Heero?s eyes. He lunged for the bed and efficiently pinned Maya down.
?You?ve never had a chance with me, Maya? he said, watching her eyes widen at his words, and with one swift motion, he broke her neck and killed her.
Heero sat up on the bed and kicked the body to the floor. Turning his attention to Relena, he saw the look on her face. Instead of reaching for her, he decided to retreat. She?d never forgive him now. Between what he had done, all the people he killed tonight, and what that woman had said, she would never look at him the same. This was too much to forgive and accept.
For once, Heero forgot to mask his emotions, as he glanced at her and then started walking to the door. As he turned the knob, he heard her say, ?No, Heero.?
He wasn?t ready to face her yet, too ashamed of what he?d done.
He sensed her movements and confirmed she was walking to him as she softly said ?Heero,? again. His muscles tightened and his jaw was set in a firm line.
?Please don?t leave me,? she requested, sorrow in her eyes, ?I need you.?
She had surprised him again; like that night so long ago when she had told him that she was on his side. Well, she didn?t need him. She was better off without him. He was right to begin with, look what being near him did.
Her hand touched his face, cradling it in her palm as she gently requested him to look at her. When he did, she saw the pain in his eyes.
?Relena,? his voice monotone and dead, ?I just want you to know that I never meant for this to happen. I know its no excuse but Maya??
?Shh Heero?? Relena said hugging him.
?No! I want you to know. I met Maya not too long after your mother died, the time Preventers called me home while you were traveling. She was a Preventer too.?
?Heero, honey, it doesn?t matter. I love you.?
?Relena, please? I think she had been drugging me. Anyway, somehow they captured me and brainwashed me into forgetting. And then you came back. And being with you I remembered. This time?this time it?s too much. I can?t forgive who I?ve become.? His face was void yet full of self blame.
?It wasn?t your fault.? Heero tensed again and pulled away from her embrace.
?For what its worth Relena, I?ve never been with anyone but you. She tried and tried, and I almost did once, but your memory kept haunting me. I?m sorry.?
?It?s okay. You didn?t know I was alive. They misled you.?
?I?ve got to leave you, Relena.?
He saw tears spring to her eyes when he said that. ?But why?? she questioned, searching for an answer in his eyes. But, he wouldn?t look at her any longer, as if looking at her caused him more shame.
?I only cause pain, Relena. Like tonight.?
?Heero! You did what you had to do!?
?No, I should have seen this coming. They were watching us the whole time with cameras. Maya was planted. She followed me here. That?s how they found you so quickly. I should have known that they were drugging me.?
?It?s not your fault.?
?Yes it is! I?m promised to protect you! ---- Please let me go, Relena.?
?No.?
?I have to.?
?Do you really think that if you left me that I?d be happy or safe? If you?ve become anything in the last few years it?s what I already knew you were - a good person who gives me - and others - strength. I need you. I love you Heero Yuy.?
He looked hopefully into her eyes and found himself being lowered down into a kiss.
?Stay with me,? she whispered, kissing him again.
Instead of objecting, he began to kiss her back. Hope spread through her body. His kisses were soft and demanding, mixed with guilt and need. She slowly intensified the kisses, allowing him to go through his emotions before she made any advances. Suddenly he stopped kissing her. Relena opened her eyes, preparing herself for another fight to convince him to stay. Instead, she found him starring at her, searching her eyes to see if she really meant the things he said. Looking deep into her, he saw pure love and trust.
He carefully picked her up and carried her into a nearby room, holding her as if she would break. He then placed her on a large bed and slowly lowered himself on top of her, as if he was giving her a chance to change her mind. She had no intention of doing that and anxiously pulled him down to her. He gently kissed her lips and ran one of his hands through her long hair. He lifted his head to look into her eyes once again and moved his hand from her hair to place it on a check. His eyes, for once, full of emotion, he whispered into her ear, ?I love you Relena Peacecraft.?
It was a night, for many reasons, that they would remember for the rest of their lives.
