The Wish
Chapter 3
“One…two…three!”
Noin threw the bouquet over her shoulder to the circle of eager younger women. It seemed to materialized in Relena’s hands; few of the women had noticed that it had already been caught and kept fighting each other for air. The men watched in amazement at the display of vast feminine rivalry to get the bouquet…it was the most frightening scene they had ever witnessed.
Eventually, they realized Relena had the bouquet and gave up the sport. Noin teased Milliardo that he’d soon have a new brother-in-law. “Over my dead body!” he stormed, casting the male guests with a look that almost matched the Yuy Glare of Death…almost.
When the time came to catch the garter, the Gundam boys conspired against Heero and pushed him out in front, the lacy material getting caught on his cufflink. He stared distastefully at it and glared at his comrades.
Duo grinned. “Now you get to put it on Relena.”
“WHAT!?” Milliardo yelled while Heero’s eyes narrowed dangerously at the braided pilot.
“He’s right, it’s tradition. The guy who catches the garter has to put it on the girl that caught the bouquet,” Catherine said, crossing her arms as if to make it final.
Noin calmed her husband down with a kiss that made him forget all about the stupid garter.
“Hey, that’s all right, Heero.” Duo patted his friend on the back. “You don’t have to do it if you’re scared. I’m sure that lieutenant that’s been eyeing Relena all night would love to take your place.”
Heero looked over to where Duo was pointing and noticed the young man who was clasping Relena’s hand in both of his while whispering something in her ear that was causing her to smile. Heero saw red…or rather green and strode over to them.
“Oh no. Duo, what the hell did you do now?” Trowa asked, seeing the look Heero had given the young lieutenant.
“Oh nothing. The Loooooooove Doctor just decided to play cupid.”
The three other pilots sweatdropped.
Heero grabbed Relena’s arm and yanked her away from her companion. “I need to put the damn garter on you, and I want to get this over with,” was his answer to her puzzled look as he dragged her back to the group. He set her on the chair that had been provided for the event, and she blushed fiercely as he removed her shoe and raised her dress. The guests shouted catcalls, Duo leading them on, as Heero slowly raised the garter up Relena’s thigh. The blush deepened as he helped her up.
He turned to go, but Catherine stopped him. “And just where do you think you’re going, Mr. Yuy?” She grinned mischievously. “We’re not done with you yet. You have to dance with her now.” She put a finger up to silence Heero’s protests. “It’s part of the tradition.”
“Since when?”
“Since now.”
“Wait a sec,” Duo rubbed the back of his neck, confused. “I think he’s right. I don’t think—” Hilde smacked him upside the head.
“Good,” Wufei said. “Don’t think, or talk for that matter. Then maybe we can get some peace.” Sally gave him a look that made him mumble Duo an apology.
The band began to play soft music, and the crowd parted to let the bride and groom start out the first dance.
“Aren’t they so cute?” Catherine said. Trowa smiled down at her and put his arm around her waist drawing her closer to him. The dance ended, and other couples began joining the royal couple on the dance floor. Trowa led Catherine onto it, followed by Duo and Hilde.
Wufei shrugged and grabbed Sally’s hand. “Come, Wo—err, Sally. Let us show them the true art of the dance.”
Quatre chuckled then turned to Dorothy and bowed formally. “Would you join me, Miss Dorothy?” She smiled her acceptance, and they followed the others onto the dance floor.
Heero turned to leave, but he saw the lieutenant out of the corner of his eye making his way over to Relena. He turned back to Relena, sliding his arm around her slim waist, and led her onto the dance floor. Before the lieutenant could ask to cut in, Heero shot him the Yuy Glare of Death, sending the poor man scurrying back to the other side of the room.
Relena saw Heero’s hard glare and figured he was mad that he had been suckered into dancing with her. “Heero, you really don’t have to dance with me if you don’t want to. Catherine was just joking.”
Heero just shrugged and said in his usual monotone, “If I don’t dance with you now, they’ll make me do it later, or they’ll just come up with some other scheme to get us together.”
Relena’s eyes narrowed in anger. “Well, I don’t want to be a burden on you,” she asserted sarcastically. “Don’t worry about them forcing you to do anything else with me, because I don’t want to have anything to do with you!” She walked out of his arms and right off the floor.
He stood there for a moment, incredulous that she’d actually lost her temper. Well…good. He’d feed on that anger.
It only made what he had to do easier.
He left the festivities and returned silently to his chamber.
