The Wish (1)

The Wish

AC 198
Cinq Kingdom

A light breeze swept over the figure as she gazed up at the brilliance of the night sky. The stars seemed to shine unusually bright, granting their silent blessings to the event scheduled the next day. Relena Peacecraft leaned against the railing of the balcony, the thin white nightgown her only protection from the chilly spring breezes.

I should try to get some sleep for tomorrow, she thought, but she knew it was hopeless. Sleep had evaded her for the past month. And even when she did manage to drift off, it was a restless sleep filled with disturbing dreams. The dreams were more like memories really. Memories of the past, memories of dark cobalt blue eyes filled with such determination. Memories of his warm rich voice sending her away, saying his last goodbyes before turning and walking away from her, never once looking back.

Three years ago the wars had ended and the Cinq Kingdom began to flourish once again. Milliardo Peacecraft had taken his rightful position as king and had become a strong figurehead in maintaining the newly found peace between the Earth and the colonies.

Three years ago he had realized his war missions were finally over.

Three years ago he had made peace with her brother and walked away from her.

She had kept her eyes down the whole while, preventing him from seeing the gathering tears that threatened to fall. He had never known just how much his departure had cut into her. She had wanted to be strong like he was, so she refused to let the tears fall and she let him walk away without ever knowing that he took her heart with him. He did not know and probably would never know just how much she loved him.

A tear rolled down her cheek, and Relena wiped the moisture away. She had sworn that day never to cry again, for it resulted in nothing and only left one feeling more broken inside.

She shook her head to clear it, sending her golden brown tresses side to side. She couldn’t—wouldn’t—be sad. After all wasn’t tomorrow supposed to be a happy day? Tomorrow her brother Milliardo, the once famed Lightning Count Zechs Merquise, was getting married to Lucrezia Noin. Tomorrow she would watch the eagerly awaited marriage with her friends Hilde and Dorothy by her side.

Tomorrow. Relena sighed, feeling much older than her nineteen years. She cast one more longing glance at the sky and noticed a star shining brighter than all the rest. She smiled and whispered a prayer of luck and happiness for her brother and his future bride then turned back to the warmth of her room.

She lay in her bed and slept more peacefully then she had for months, and all the while, the wishing star’s radiance doubled, then tripled. Some unknown energy pulsed from and around it, the light rivaling that of the nearly full moon. The star had decided to grant both of the desires it had heard, for even as Relena had voiced the wish, her heart had made another.

The clock’s green digits flashed two in the morning, but the figure hunched over the laptop felt no fatigue. He dialed up the world news on the World Net, and immediately, Relena Peacecraft’s face came up on the screen. His lips pulled back into something that wasn’t quite a smile.

Target found.

His objective was simple: eliminate the remainder of the Peacecraft line.

No problem, he thought, holding up the invitation to the Peacecraft-Noin wedding. I’ll make contact tomorrow. I’ll take out that brat first. Once she’s out of the way I’ll go after Zechs. No one will ever suspect me. This assassination is going to be a joke.

He shut the laptop, leaving the room bathed in darkness save for the clock’s soft green glow. He fingered the invitation and stared at it thoughtfully.

They had unknowingly invited Death to their door.

"Sometimes I wish I could go back to being five again, where the most difficult decision I had to make was whether I colored the flower red or blue. Back to when my brothers and I would stay out all day playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians. Back to when life was easy and carefree. But that would mean a life when I didn’t know you. I don’t think I’d like that too much."

actually, from the way you discribe how he thinks, it makes me think it's Heero. If it is, it makes for an interesting plot twist.
