*cries* I was hoping i could find out. Nevermind though, and thanks for replying.Crazygurl wrote:I think I can announce that I have no idea. And I think that no one besides the author knows. We'll have to see the mangas to get the answer. In the anime, it was not broken.
I'm hoping they do, but it's okay if they don't, I guess.

All right, I have read SOME of the opinions on this page, but I do not have time to read them all. So I will just answer the question that started the thread: what do I think of Akito?
He got screwed. That about sums up his life to the point that Tohru came in. Akito got truly, royally screwed by having his fate chosen for him at birth - making him the titular head of the Sohma clan was just some way of whoever the heck made that decision to relieve some of the guilt of digging a grave for a new-born baby. So of course, he is given power and resposiblity, but he knows it will not do him a whit of good. Would I be pissed? Yes. Would I go psycho abusive with the members of the clan who cursed me? Maybe. Of course, Akito was allowed to go psycho abusive - no one tried to stop him. No one ever said "You can't do that." He had no guidance, and whatever he said was law.
I do not know who said it first, but the saying, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely" comes to mind whenever Akito is dishing out his angst to the rest of the zodiac.
It was quite touching that Tohru was the only one to reach him after so many years of hating his destiny, his curse, his family, and the living world in general. I do feel sorry for the guy, but he still pissed me off when he tried abusing Tohru. That poor chick just had too much spirit for him though.
Akito is very much to be pitied, and that is all that I can really feel for him.

You'd even be madder at him if you'd read the manga. He wasn't quite as physically abusive, but man, he really knows how to get to you-emotionally and mentally. :-?

Akito
Most people have probably figured out how I feel about Akito, Broken covers alot of my feelings about his character.
One of the things about Fruits basket and Akito is the degree of truth it displays as far as their cultural beliefs on social interaction, even if the attitudes are old fashioned.
Akito is the monster he was permitted to become. Not only because of the fact that he was spoiled absolutely rotten, but because, and I believe I have this correct, at some point in the Manga someone talks about how the Juunishi are compelled to obey him. As another person here has said, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
However, I don't think he's a loose cannon with no control of himself, quite the opposite actually. The incident with Hatori-sama went against the norm in many ways. What he did, in that incident, I do believe was an accident. The fact that he was able to think on his feet and twist it to being Kana's fault in his own head, in my opinion, shows that it was an accident. Akito doesn't deny the things he does to others when he does them on purpose.
If you notice, most of the true physical abuse he inflicts on the characters was done when they were still very young, Kisa and Hiro's ages and younger. He uses the physical pain first to break them while their young and also because they haven't got enough experience or knowledge to really understand the mind games he so enjoys.
Also, most of the abuse, mental and physical, takes place in private one on one situations. The old ideas of saving face and honorable conduct are present throughout the storyline. In Japan, what happens behind closed doors remains there. It's how you act in public that is important. Akito can be a bit sarcastic when in public dealing with the Juunishi, but he doesn't out and out abuse them. He uses subtlety through words and mannerisms to convey his menace.
As the Juunishi grow older, the use of the mental abuse grows. He keeps them under his thumb through the threat of what he can do to them. He watches them constantly, using Shigure, Hatori and Ayame as informants. It's not necessarily that they want to help for they too are under compulsion. Shigure in particular takes alot of heat from FB fans because he seems to help Akito against the younger set the most. But, being a dog, he is really quite helpless to do less than help that which he views as his master.
Lastly, my husband brought this point up not to long ago and I have used it in Broken. If the Juunishi are the animals of the Chinese Zodiac that went to a party, perhaps one could view Akito as the representation of Kami Sama himself. The twist on that is that a god, gains love and loyalty from his followers, simply by being there. The heads of the Sohma clan don't have the same level of blind subservience that most Gods are given. They've had to do whatever necessary to get what they feel should have simply been given in the first place. There could even be something said for the idea that if the Juunishi are left with some of the abilities of the animals they represent when they are in their human forms, then perhaps there is just a touch of godlike power in the Sohma clan heads. It burns them out twisting their human natures and causes them to age and die quickly.
There is no doubt that the man is a monster, maybe even in many ways he could be considered psychotic, but he always knows what he's doing, what he's saying, and knows exactly where and when to strike at those he wishes to harm. In a way, that makes him all the more frightening in my estimation.

Um...well. Akito is the god to the jyuunishi...and yeah, he's the representative of Kami-sama in the banquet.
Damn him. I hate that guy. He hurt poor Momiji in the manga for protecting Tohru (he beat him up!) and he scratched Tohru's cheek. *sob* Not only that, Kureno's his bedamte. *cries*

Ummmm, it looked to me more of like Kureno comforting Akito like a parent comforts a needy child. Akito really is basically a needy child, so I wasn't all that surprised at the suggestion that he makes Kureno stay with him when he sleeps. He treats Kureno strangely anyway, sort of like a servant who is also a caregiver. I know I've seen that in books and movies before. A spoiled rotten rich child who lacks and desires parental-style comfort so demands it from a maid/ governess/ nanny/ etc.
Did that make any sense at all? :-?
