It had always been a secret, their love. If it had been uncovered, the consequences would have endangered her although it might have freed him. He had always been the one to dream of what it would be like to be free together. It was a fantasy surely, she knew that well, but there was always that small part of her heart that ached for it. Still, her reason could not be overcome by wishes. She knew without a doubt that if they were discovered it would be the end. The end of them, her, and him. The end of everything they had so delicately built, their fragile world of painted glass and rays of starlight. She did not want to see that world shatter, both their hearts breaking from the shards.
But she could not resist him.
Her will had been matched against kings and queens, against nations and kingdoms, perhaps even against God, and through it all she had stood unwavering. But when confronted by the power of his dark gaze and the gentle caresses of his strong hands, her will had the consistency of water, flowing wherever he wanted. And what was, perhaps, more surprising was the fact that she enjoyed it. Never before had she felt the emotions she felt when she was with him. Locked within the circle of his arms, the universe shrunk to the feel of his breath against her cheek and his smooth skin under her searching fingers. She no longer cared who saw them or what any of her endless advisors would think. She only wanted to catch that moment by its wings and cage it for eternity, hung from her ceiling where she could set it free anytime she wished. Because of this, her moments with him were like rare jewels sparkling in the dimness of her life, lighting her from within. What she might not have known was that she lit him in the exact same way.
Standing in the doorway of her balcony, she watched the stars move across the sky, her thoughts dancing in her head to no particular tune. She found the Archer and the Evening Star, naming them within her heart as she had done many times as a child. Out loud, though, her words were for him, a summoning.
?The darkness hides me not from thee, but the night shineth as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.?*
They were the same words she had whispered for months and each time he came to her, feeling the tug of them on his soul. It would be no different tonight and she left her glass balcony door open to the twilight wind as she shut off her lamp and laid down on her bed, her silk nightgown ruffling with the erratic breezes. Her last thought before falling asleep was that Heero would surely smell of wind when he came.
?Relena.?
She blinked herself awake, feeling the warm, comfortable weight she had expected against her back, his larger hand covering her smaller one. She smiled instantly and turned her head over her shoulder to look up at him, seeing the stardust still in his eyes.
?Heero,? she replied, having not time for any other words as he leaned down and captured her mouth with his, the kiss filled with some intangible need, almost a grief that made her feel abruptly sad. Frowning, she pulled back a little, ending the kiss to look into his face, hoping to read something there. His face was too guarded, though, his emotions hidden, even from her, though she had learned long ago that apparent lack of feeling only meant he was too well trained at hiding them, not that he didn?t have them.
?Something?s wrong,? she said softly, still trying to discern what it was. In answer, Heero rested his forehead against hers, blue eyes closing as dark hair and light mixed. She lifted a hand to his cheek. ?Something happened.? Her heart quickened a little, her thoughts immediately turning to matters that had come before her council. Did it have something to do with the Colony Air Act she was trying to get passed? She had had some opposition to it, maybe?
?I just?? he trailed off and she knew immediately that it had nothing to do with politics or the mission he had been sent to complete. For an instant, she had seen naked pain on his face and it frightened her. It was not like him to take things to heart, where they could fester and cause him sadness. She wasn?t even sure if he ever did feel sad anymore. To her, it was all part of the mystery that was Heero.
?What?? she questioned, her voice gentle as she touched his temple and threaded her fingers into his hair. His eyes opened and their gazes locked, the simple power of it fizzing in the air between them. The connection built between them until Relena felt a warmth start at the tip of her toes and move up her body to the crown of her head, her skin tingling with her lover?s nearness. He must have felt it too for he broke their gaze and bent to bury his head in the crook of her neck and shoulder. The gesture was so oddly child-like that she was surprised for a brief moment before instinct kicked in and she turned completely onto her back to wrap her slender arms around him, holding him as close as she could. They stayed wrapped together for a few minutes, reveling in the feel of just being together, and then Heero lifted himself onto his elbow, his gaze as intense as she had ever seen.
?It won?t always be like this, will it.?
It wasn?t a question but she knew he wanted an answer so she gave it, her voice tinkling like harp notes around him. ?No.? She felt him physically wilt and hastened to smile at him, kissing his jaw line. ?It will be much better.?
She felt his energy return as his grip on her strengthened and his expression relaxed. She laughed lightly in her throat, trying to ease his seeming discomfort. ?This is only the beginning, Heero. From here, everything can only get better if only because we must work harder for it.? She tilted her head at him. ?What made you? ?
He shook his head and stifled her question with a light kiss, that small bit of sadness still evident in the way he held her so possessively. She felt her own heart wilt a little in return. Would Heero?s demons never let him be?
When they broke apart again, Relena let her hand drift down towards his waistline to the back of his belt where she deftly pulled out his silvery set of handcuffs that he had not yet had time to put away. With a calm smile in the face of his arched eyebrows, she carefully snapped one cuff around his wrist and the other around her own so that his left hand and her right were clasped together.
?We will always be together, Heero, even when we are apart. Do you believe me??
He looked up at their joined hands against the satin pillows and nodded once. ?Yes, I believe you.?
?Good,? she replied, before bringing her free arm up to wrap around his neck and pull him down for their deepest kiss of the night. As their lips touched, a spark ignited between them and Relena?s breath quickened even as Heero?s free hand traveled over the smooth fabric of her nightgown to her thigh where it slipped under it, bunching the material up as his hand came to rest on her left breast, his fingers massaging and flicking until the nipple stiffened in response to him. In turn, Relena groaned softly and arched against the calloused skin of his palm as her own hand went to the buttons of his shirt, the process of undoing them becoming almost an ordeal one-handed. Once his shirt was opened, her fingers made invisible trails over the hard planes of his abdomen, tracing the scars for her mouth to find as her lips settled on his chest, her tongue lightly kissing the sensitive skin around his nipples. Heero?s tongue had found its way to her breasts, which had been uncovered with the simple act of pushing her nightgown up under her arms since it couldn?t be stripped off due to the fact that they were cuffed together. He massaged one breast as he kissed the other, Relena?s body practically singing underneath him, her hips brushing against his groin as she arched every now and then with a little whimper.
Relena?s left hand traveled southwards from his chest to his pants when she felt a hardness against her thigh, her groin warming in preparation. With patience she no longer felt, she undid his belt buckle and then his pants until she could push down his boxers and his bulge was, at last, freed. He helped her as much as possible, using his own free hand to pull his pants the rest of the way off before lowering himself into the cradle of her spread thighs, the silky skin of her legs brushing against his ribs as he gazed into her eyes so filled with smoky passion. She smiled, granting affirmation to the silent question he always asked no matter how many times they had been together. To him, it was always a surprising gift, never to be simply granted.
In one swift moment he was inside her up to the hilt, a move that might have been uncomfortable in its fierceness if she hadn?t been ready for it. She sighed in his ear, a sign of the contentment she felt at their completeness. Like this, it was almost as if they were one person, so completely immersed within each other that it would be impossible to tell Heero from Relena.
These thoughts, though, were immediately jolted from her mind as Heero began their rhythm, slow and steady as he knew she liked it at first, Relena?s melody melting seamlessly with Heero?s harmony until their lovemaking was a beautiful symphony that only they could hear, a soul song that made a quick crescendo into the earth-shattering finale that left them weak and breathless. Heero?s head lay against her collarbone, his free hand around her waist just as hers was around his, their cuffed hands raised slightly above their heads against the pillows, fingers intertwined.
?I love you, Heero,? she whispered as she felt his breathing lengthen, his body stilling as a well-deserved sleep caught him at last. She ran her fingers sleepily through his hair as a yawn caught her and she felt her own dreams pulling at her. She closed her eyes in response and settled herself in for the rest of the night, her last waking thought that she had been right.
Heero did smell of the wind.
