Chapter I- The Beginning of the End

The year is After Colony 197, the 197th year since man first reached for the stars. A year superficially identical to any other but, in actuality, the last year of the most extraordinary war in the history of humanity.

It is the time of Operation Meteor. The time of the Gundams. The time of the Eve Wars.

The time of Relena Darlian.

The museum curator read aloud the plaque on the exhibit. ?This was recovered from the Queen?s personal residence after the revolution. Her Highness kept a diary for most of her life and after her death, these entries were excavated from the ruins of the Royal Palace.

?Born in the Sanc Kingdom in the year After Colony 180, Queen Relena Darlian began her life in a time of great political turmoil. Her parents, the rulers of Sanc, were assassinated by the Alliance soon after her birth and she was adopted by Vice Foreign Minister Darlian and his wife.

?The earliest diary entry dates January 1st AC 197, right after the conclusion of the Mariemaia Incident.? The curator played the phonographic diary.

An acerbic voice echoed throughout the chamber, amplified by speakers surrounding the exhibit. Every syllable exuded absolute authority.

?My name is Relena Darlian. Today is the first day of the first year of true peace. Let today be commemorated in history as the day I began my ascension to the throne of the Earth Sphere. History, as the famous analogy goes, is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.

?When I am finished, however, history will play only one song: the tune of my dynasty.

?The year is After Colony 197. Welcome to the last chapter of humanity?s bloody history and the beginning of mine.?

The room fell into a stunned silence. Even the younger students stopped tittering. The gravity of the recording seemed to weigh heavily on everyone in the audience.

The museum curator smiled wryly. Her Majesty never failed to awe a crowd into silence. ?Her Highness entitled her diary, ?In Conquest Born.??

He pressed Play.

Even from a youth that most would have considered as nothing but a babe, I was under no illusion that I was normal. Children, as everyone knows, are intuitive in their own rights, and even they shied from me. Perhaps they were right to do so. There has always been an aching, unquenchable fire burning deep in my chest. Both painful and pleasurable at the same time, I have lived a life of paradoxes.

I?ll admit it. I have a destructive nature. When I was just a small girl, I sometimes secretly took pleasure in small animals? pain. Sometimes it was nothing more than a bug with its wings torn off or someone?s pet ending up as road kill. When I destroyed, I was alive. I had power! To me, ability automatically conferred the right to decide if an animal should live painfully or die quickly. I wanted to play God.





A/N- I am not new to the Gundam Wing fandom. I have previously submitted works under this penname on fanfiction.net, if any of you are interested. I?m keeping the penname although I feel that this work is drastically different from my previous stories and I have certainly matured as a writer since then.

So you might be wondering?where am I going with this? Is it a romance? An action/adventure? Drama? Well, it may be all of these things when I am done. But here?s what I can tell you for sure. This will be entirely told from Relena?s perspective. Her goal is to build for herself an empire. From this chapter, you know that she succeeded. This story will reveal how she accomplished it.

Some of you may say that she sounds out-of-character but I don?t think so. This is a girl-woman who has survived two wars and the death of her family, became Queen of the World, and restored the Sanc Kingdom all before her sixteenth birthday. This story will contain numerous flashbacks to events in the GW canon and her childhood. I hope to flesh out a Relena that few have seen. In the meantime, I hope you?ll give her a chance.

writing's not bad...quite excellent, if I may say so...however, I kinda agree with peach....she seems a bit evil in her diary entries...totally contradicting the "usual" pacifistic attitude people had known her for...

...and I just can't picture her actually enjoying the idea of helpless animals being killed....it doesn't seem like her especially when we know that she could "possibly" be an animal lover due to the video that came with the series' ending song, 'Just Love'....

..nevertheless, I'm still curious to see what exactly you have in mind in pursuing this train of thought...another sequel might clear things up...good luck!

In regards to the fact that Relena sounds evil, please keep in mind that this is an exhibit in a museum in the far future long after Relena has passed away. While watching the TV series, I quickly recognized that Relena is quite ambitious. It's pretty near impossible to become Queen of the World, Vice Foreign Minister, survive two wars, etc. and be just a normal, sweet girl. She's undoubtedly a prodigy.

The little teaser that I gave you is simply a small glimpse into Relena's childhood that I hope will ultimately explain her actions during the series and afterwards.

Remember, earlier in the series, she took a gun and attempted to kill Lady Une in cold blood. She's definitely not a "good" person by any stretch of the imagination. While that doesn't make her "bad" either, it does add credibility to my stance.
