Ch.3!
A New Generation
Chapter Three; "Solitary Man"
...........................
Kyo sat at the table waiting for the new maid. He read the newspaper quietly. Aeris and Vincent had gone to school. He looked at the clock. The maid was ten minutes late so far, and it was raining. "Maybe that's why she's late..." He mused. He took a bite of toast his and resumed reading the paper. He heard heavy footsteps and gasping. He frowned on hearing a thud, and then a whimper. He stood up and pulled on his shoes, wandering outside. He saw a woman, a few years younger than himself, with short blond hair and honey brown eyes. She looked up at him and frowned. "Are you okay?" Kyo asked, helping her up.
"Are you Mr. Sohma?"
"Yes... I am."
"Oh my god! I am SOOOO sorry I'm late! I didn't mean to be! My mother was having some trouble and I had to help her, and then on my way it started raining, and-"
"It's okay! Gee wiz..." He led her into the house. She was soaked. "Would you like a towel?" he asked. She frowned. "You don't have to... I don't really need one... I'm not that wet..." Kyo glared oddly at her. "You're soaked, you idiot. Stay there for a minute..." Kyo disappeared into the other room. "Take off your coat, miss. Make yourself at home."
The woman, a bit confused my his dimeanor, slowly removed her coat and hung it up. Kyo came back into the room and handed her a warm, thick, fluffy towel. She smiled warmly. "Thank you." She said. "I'll get to work now." Kyo sat back down and picked up his paper again. "Why don't you dry up a bit first?" He asked calmly. She frowned. "But I came here to work... I don't want to get in your way." Kyo glared at her, then continued to read. "You could get sick." The woman sighed.
She looked around. She noticed a hefty pile of dishes formed in the kitchen, and burnt remnants of food on the stove burners. The house definitely needed cleaning. "What's your name anyways?" Kyo asked, startling her.
"Oh... my name is Saya. Saya Kasumi." Kyo smiled. "I'm Kyo Sohma. Nice to meet you."
............................
"You're very messy, Mr. Sohma." Saya said, giggling. Kyo frowned, a bit annoyed. "Don't call me 'Mr.Sohma'... call me Kyo! And I don't make this mess alone. Two teenagers live here too."
"Sorry, Mr- I mean, Kyo. Are the teenagers yours?"
"Technically, no. One of them, you could say, is... I'm not his real father, but I've raised him from diapers... but the other is a 'friend's'. She's staying here for a few weeks." Saya smiled and continued to scrub the kitchen floor. "I live by myself... I used to live with my mother, but... now she's in the hospital..." Kyo frowned. "Sorry. I didn't mean to talk about that." She stood up and poured the soapy water down the sink. She had finished the kitchen finally! "Is this better, Mr- erm... Kyo?" Kyo stood up and walked into the kitchen. "Wow... it looks like a different house."
"Kyo, we're home!" came a cheery voice. Kyo knew it was Aeris. She and the gloomy Vincent took off their shoes and threw their bags down. "Saya, come here." he said. Aeris and Vincent both looked up with interest. "Who's Saya?"
"Aeris, Vincent... this is Saya, our maid. Saya, these two are Aeris and Vincent."
Aeris smiled. "Hello, miss Saya!" Vincent blinked in confusion. "He hasn't said anything to piss you off, has he?" he asked. Saya laughed as Kyo got mad. "No. He's been very nice, to tell the truth. Hey, are you guys ready for dinner?"
The two teenagers nodded. "What would you like?" she asked. Kyo tried to hide his nervous face. Vincent chuckled to himself. "We only have one option for now. SOMEBODY needs to go buy groceries." He glared at Kyo. "Don't they, Kyo?" Kyo narrowed his eyes. Aeris sighed. "Stop it, you two!"
Saya scurried into the kitchen to make dinner.
...................................
Saya came into the room carrying a large pot. "Hope you like rice!" she said. She served the three their rice, and then put the cap on the pot, about to carry it back into the kitchen. Kyo frowned. "Saya!" She paused and looked at him. "Yes, sir?"
"Aren't you going to have some?" Saya seemed shocked. "Re-.. really?" He nodded. "Certainly." He sat a bowl and a set of chopsticks down at the fourth side of the table. Saya smiled and put some rice in the bowl. "Thank you, sir." Vincent watched peculiarly. "Don't call me sir... geez... just call me Kyo. I hate being called 'Mr' or 'Sir'..." He scratched the back of his head. "Sorry... but thank you for the food." Aeris also watched with great interest. "What, do you think I'm a chauvinist pig or somethin'? Didn't any of your other bosses let you stay for dinner or anything?"
"No, actually." Saya said, slightly blushing. "You're the nicest boss I've ever had to this point." She smiled warmly. Kyo smiled and looked at Vincent. "See I know how to treat a lady!" Vincent raised an eyebrow. "Obviously you don't cause you still ain't got one." Kyo froze up. Aeris and Saya frowned. "Kyo, are you okay?" Aeris asked. Kyo stood up and left the table. "Excuse me..." he disappeared into the other room. Aeris and Saya turned to Vincent, who stared at the floor in shame. "What's wrong with him, Vincent??" Aeris asked. "He's just.... sensitive about that subject... I should've thought before I said anything. God, I'm such an asshole..." Saya frowned. She followed Kyo. She found him sitting mopily. "Kyo?" She called. He didn't look up or even respond. "Kyo, are you okay?" She leaned down and touched his arm. She saw his pain-filled eyes.
"Kyo are you-"
"I'm fine." Saya frowned. "You don't seem too awfully happy to me... what's the matter?"
"Nothing. I said I'm fine, didn't I?"
Saya sighed. Kyo reach into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. "You were here for eight hours, right?" Saya frowned. "Are you firing me??"
"Not at all. You were here for eight hours, right?"
"I only worked for six, though..." Kyo sighed. "You were here for eight, though, correct? Here." He handed her 4000 yen. Saya frowned. "I can't take this! Here!" He gave handed ten yen back to him. Kyo frowned and looked at her with his painful eyes. "Obviously you're desperate for money if you'll work for a lousy 500 yen an hour. Go ahead. Take it."
"But it's not fair! That's practically ro-"
"Take it, Saya. I don't care if you worked the whole time or not. Truthfully, I enjoyed your company."
Saya smiled to herself. Aeris and Vincent were standing in the dorway watching. Saya closed her eyes and grinned. Vincent's eyes widened. Saya wrapped her arms around Kyo. Kyo only gasped before...
*POOF*
Saya kept her eyes closed as she held Kyo against her bosom, making the little cat blush. "You're the nicest boss I've ever had!" She opened her eyes and saw the angry cat. She frowned. "Where did Kyo go?" She asked, looking around. Vincent drooped his head, and Aeris giggled. "These look like his clothes, but... do you know where he went, kitty?"
"I'm right here, damn it!" Saya gasped and let go of the cat.Kyo frowned. "I wasn't supposed to do that... of crap! Meow.... meow.... me-ow?"
Saya passed out.
............................
Saya's eyes slowly opened and she saw the little orange cat hovering over her. She sat up. "Saya?" came Kyo's voice. She looked around, but only saw the two teens and the cat. "Kyo...?" The cat got annoyed. "Down here!" Saya gasped. "KYO?!" He sighed. "Don't get bent outta' shape. This is normal." The cat turned his head away. "I just wanted to say... that I don't want you to freak out... this is a family curse... I just wanted to know if you'll stay as our maid, even though.... Vincent and I turn into... cats..." Saya looked at Vincent, then back at Kyo. "You BOTH do?" She asked quietly. Vincent rolled his eyes. "Yes. We both do." Kyo informed. "You can either get freaked out and we can erase your memory of all this, or you can care less about the matter and not tell anyone, and stay our maid." Saya only smiled warmly. "I'll keep a secret. You can trust me." Aeris laughed happily.
"Yay!"
"Oh no." Kyo said.
*POOF*
Saya's whole face flushed red. She closed her eyes tightly.
A moment passed and she opened them. She looked very embarassed. Aeris smiled. "We should tell you about the transformations..."
.............................
Saya smiled. "Well, I have to be going. It's getting late and I still have to go visit my mom. Goodbye, everyone." She waved to them and walked away. Aeris smiled. "I really like her, Kyo." She said. Kyo nodded. "She is very nice, isn't she?" Vincent watched as she walked down the pathway. He looked to Kyo. "Kyo," he said. "Yes?"
"Did something about her seem... oh I dunno.... familiar?"
"Not really... why?"
"No reason... I could have sworn..." Vincent smiled, realizing what it was about her. He looked at the back of Kyo's head. Kyo and Aeris were going back inside, as many thoughts ran through Vincent's head. "Hopefully he'll notice."
.............................
Saya entered her mother's hospital room with a small bouquet of flowers. She had just bought it with some of the money that Kyo had given her. "Hello, mom." The woman in the bed rolled over to look at Saya. "Saya dear.." she said hoarsely. Saya sat the bouquet in a vase on the woman's nightstand. She then hugged her mother and sat by her on the bed. "I got a job today... and the people that I work for are really nice to me!" Saya told her about her day, but froze up when she thought about Kyo turning into a cat. She said nothing about that. "And that's how my day went."
The woman smiled. "I'm glad they're actually being nice to you this time, Saya. You've finally found a good job, and the people are nice, too. It sounds great, dear." Saya smiled warmly. "Now I can help pay for your medical bills..." THe woman sighed. "I told you, I'll take care of it." She touched Saya's face. "Take care of yourself, honey... you earned the money, so you spend it. You have your appartment and your bills to worry about." Saya frowned.
"I know, mom... but I can make about 20000 yen a week! My bills come to about 40000 a month, and I can help with your medicine..." Saya's mother shook her head. "No, Saya... my medicines are far too expensive. I can't have you paying for them. Saya frowned. Inside, she knew that if she paid her rent and bills, and her mother's medicine, she would have no money for food or transportation. She frowned.
"Why don't you move in with your uncle?"
"Because my uncle is a no-good jerk! He would take all my money for himself!" She bowed her head. "And that would also mean I couldn't keep my current job. I've only been there one day so far, but I already know I would really miss it." The woman stroked Saya's hair. "You should go home and rest, dear. You'll need it to work tomorrow." Saya kissed her mother and left the hospital.
She went home, and slept soundly.
