<center>Disclaimer: I don?t own Inuyasha. I don?t own Miroku and Sango either. I don?t own a lot of things, really, but what I do know for sure that I own is my mind and that?s what makes me me. Note, this is somewhat of a little ficclet, I guess you could call it?. Although I?m not sure on what I?m doing with it, as you know it?s obviously a continuation of Eternally Missed? ahem?.
Dedication: Mellie, I miss you, and hope you?re enjoying your summer; and Ice Princess, yay for your reviews and all the praise you shower me with!

He was jolted awake with a brusque shake. His eyes snapped open, and he quickly looked at his surroundings, immediately regretting it as the bright afternoon sun blinded him. The monk groaned loudly, his face pale, dark rings beneath his bloodshot eyes. He ran the back of his arm along his eyes, then dragged his hands over his face, trying to work feeling into the slack muscles. Everything was so stiff; the pain was shocking as he tried to turn his head to peer at whoever had awoken him.
The sight of her turned his stomach.
Crimson was caked to her bare legs, her clothing stained thoroughly. In somewhat of a nervous habit she had picked up decades ago, Kagome wrung her hands together, trying absently to somehow take off the blood by just rubbing the skin together. It wasn?t working, and it merely churned her stomach further. She forced a shaky smile, staring down at him, and sagged heavily into the wall.
?Wha?? Miroku had to clear his throat, cutting himself off. He was still groggy, unsure of the day, of what had happened the night before. Or was it two nights ago? Why couldn?t he remember? He tried again, rubbing at his eyes once more. ?What happened? Sango??
Kagome closed her eyes. She wanted to tell him, but kept silent a moment longer. Her knees trembled, the exhaustion taking its? toll on her body. She slid down the wall until she sat with her knees folded beneath her. Her hands rested on her lap, her fingers twitching every few seconds. She was remembering that night, remembering how she scolded herself violently to get it together over the immense loss of blood, over how hard her fingers shook as she tried to thread the needle through broken flesh.
Hard fingers bit into her shoulders when she didn?t reply.
Kagome made no move to stop him as he roughly shook her. ?Tell me, I?m begging you, Kagome?is she, is she dead?? Miroku pleaded in a broken whisper, watching her.
For another moment she remained silent. He thought she had fallen asleep, her head falling forward, her hair curtaining her ashen face from view. The monk went to shake her again, however he was unexpectedly startled by the claws digging into his shoulder from behind.
?Give her a moment,? Inuyasha growled, moving around to sit on his hunches next to them. He glared at the monk a moment longer before letting his eyes take in the woman leaning into the wall. ?She?s been up all night and all morning.?
Miroku swallowed heavily, preparing to jump to his feet and rush into the hut, but Kagome lifted a hand, touching his wrist lightly. ?The loss of blood was startling, Kaede and I didn?t think she was going to make it. Miroku, I?m?? but she couldn?t finish. Her fingers tightened on his arm and she forced herself to continue. ?She?s resting now. Promise me you?ll let her rest in peace, in silence. She?s experienced a great loss; Kohaku is beyond saving now. Naraku has him too far in; we?re not ever going to be able to bring him back. You must make her realize this, but not now. Wait until she is recovered; if she were to be told this now, she would lose the will to live entirely and simply crumble away.
?She will stop caring.?
Kagome let her voice soften. Miroku stared at her, wide eyed. His vision blurred. He barely blinked, his mind trying to register her words. Kagome lifted her hand off his wrist, touching her fingers to his cheek. ?She will live, I promise you this,? she whispered, brushing off the tear that had fallen. ?Sango is strong, she will survive. With proper care and medical treatment, she will live.?
Inuyasha absently touched the stiff hilt of Tetsusaiga, watching the two humans. He was revolted by the scent and mere sight of the blood. He longed for nothing more then to pluck the small human into his arms and carry her to the nearest lake to cleanse her skin of the foul stench. He had been there the whole time, watching as she and Kaede worked to keep Sango alive and breathing; they had worked well into the morning, not once relenting on the task at hand.
The hanyou was startled from his thoughts as the monk grabbed the girl in a hug, his arms tight around her. Miroku kept his face buried into her shoulder, trying not to tremble as tears burned his throat and eyes. Kagome ran her fingers through his hair soothingly, stroking them along his back as a mother would to comfort a child in distress. She smiled faintly, relieved that her friend had been saved and had survived the night and was resting deeply due to the liquids Kaede has given to her.
?It?s going to be all right. Take a deep breath, Miroku,? she murmured, closing her eyes, holding him closer. Inuyasha felt his upper lip curl at the sight of them, however his ears flattened for a brief moment at the footsteps coming from around the corner of the hut. His eyes darted in that direction, and he lifted his nose to sniff the air, his right ear twitching slightly.
Kagome continued to speak softly, giving the monk words of encouragement. ?Go to the lake, take a moment to yourself and relax before you see her.? She pulled back to look at him. ?Take a nice bath, all right? When you are done, you can come back and tend to her, and also ? please, have a bite to eat. You look as pale as a sheet, it?s frightening.?
?Forgive me, I did not mean to use your shoulder as I did. It?s not like me to just fall apart like this, but??
?It?s all right, I understand. You nearly lost her; she?s dear to you, even if you won?t admit it yourself, it?s been clear for a while now.? Kagome looked to Inuyasha. Her hands went back to rest in her lap, the twitching calmed down in her fingers. ?I, too, need to wash up.? She made a move to stand, and her hands clutched the wall as her legs began to tremble. Inuyasha came up instantly, grabbing her under the arm with a gentle yet firm hand.
?Stupid wench, overworking yourself like that,? he muttered, pulling her near. The hanyou easily lifted her into his arms and was ready to leap into the air when Kagome laid a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. ?What now?? he all but snarled impatiently, looking to her.
Kagome looked to Miroku as he was standing and using the wall as support, his muscles stiff. ?I?ll return before the sun hits mid-afternoon. I?ll check and clean the wounds before we have a bite to eat, all right? Take care to wash up. Kaede is resting in the hut; and Kirara is with Shippou. They are all in the hut with her, you have nothing to fear, no more harm will come to her.?
Miroku nodded, giving a small bow of thanks. He remained in that position until the pair disappeared towards the forest.

Okay...
*sighs in relief*
I had a "shed-tears-here" bucket stationed besides my desk chair when I saw that you had updated, just in case you pulled out your angst-arsenal and went ballistic on your dear readers. But bless you, you didn't. Yay that Sango is alive! Yay that now Miroku can breath! Not-so-yay that Kohaku is beyond repair...Naraku is spawn enough already, but Leia, you just take his vileness to a completely new level. Great chapter, as always, and now I'm curious as to where you'll take this fic. Is it going to be more introspectively focused on Sango's ability to cope with the loss of Kohaku? A quiet, intimate love story about Sango finding some semblance of peace with Miroku? Or an all-out adventure of somehow overcoming Naraku and bringing Kohaku back from the brink of 'death'? I'm enthralled as I am with every single fic you share. Amazing stuff!
Oh, and BTW, I had sex with your icon last night. Hope you don't mind.
