Chapter Three
?Please,? she unexpectedly choked on a broken sob, ?just leave me alone!? Kagome watched, horrified, as the skin continued to melt away, burning into the ground as if it were acid. Her breath caught in her throat; she was paralyzed, she couldn?t think, she couldn?t move. All she could do was stare at the monstrosity before her, his reptile, slanted eyes narrowed and piercing to her wide ones.
The fingers on her leg turned into a dozen or so thick snakes, and only tightened their grip the more she pleaded. They hissed, and Kagome screamed out feeling the satiny, yet damp touch of something unfamiliar stroke along the inside of her knee.
From the doorway, the two figures slowly moved into the shrine, standing at the top of the staircase. They watched in silence, both wearing calm expressions. Kagome gripped the edge of the well, trying to use it as leverage as she struggled desperately to free herself. She used her free leg to kick at him, her heel repeatedly bashing against his cheek. His skin had the rough texture of old leather; worn and brittle, but at the same time he was covered in scales. Souta released the edge of the well, grabbing onto her other leg. He gave a sharp jerk, and Kagome hit the ground hard on her back.
Bright white light exploded in her mind, and she cringed away from it. Pain throbbed madly in the back of her head, while it blossomed in her mouth. A metallic tang slid along her tongue as she sucked in her bottom lip. Kagome fought to get a gasp of air as Souta slithered on top of her, leering down from above. Through the tears that nearly blinded her, she stared up at him, frightened as to what he would do to her now. Why was this happening? What had happened to her family? Was this really her family?
No, she admonished herself sharply, trying to force the pain out of her head as best as she could to concentrate on the matter at hand. There?s a reason for why this is happening; think, Kagome. Don?t think of the problem, think of a damn solution.
Squirming, she tried to lash out. Her hand froze in mid-air.
Kagome sucked in abruptly and went completely still in fear that they would bite her; the snakes covered the length of her legs and slid up onto her lower torso. She was trapped! Think! her mind shouted. Get a grip, don?t panic!
Souta rumbled with laughter at how helpless she was beneath him, and lowered his face closer to hers, the snakes hissing as they ventured over her body until pinning her arms firmly into the ground. ?I enjoyed hearing him scream,? he whispered fervently. Kagome went deathly pale. She shook her head slowly, the disbelief written in her eyes.
?No?? she managed to gasp, too shocked to say anything else.
Souta nodded. He threw his head back, laughing out loud. The ebony snakes that made up his hair hissed out, joining their master in the mirth. Their red tongues shook along the air, their fangs oozing poison. Kagome gave a soft moan of pain, feeling the poison drip-drop down on her cheek. It burned as it slid down the side of her face and into her hair, the skin melting away in a long thin streak. The laughter stopped. Souta brought his head back forward, and peered down at her with beady crimson eyes, almost squinted in thought.
?He cried a name,? Souta went on, his thin lips pulled back in a hideous grin. His fangs leaked poison too, and his forked tongue flicked over them. ?Do you know whose name? Would you like to know??
Kagome whimpered, fearing to know. She shook her head quickly, running her tongue along the cut that swelled along her bottom lip. Souta hissed quietly, and leaned over her. His tongue came out, stroking over the bleeding welt on her cheek from where the poison had touched her. Kagome tried to flinch away from the stabbing sting, the pain only renewing her effort to escape.
Souta put his mouth next to her ear, his tongue slipping out again. He touched the inside shell of her ear with the tip, hissing the name slowly. ?Kikyou.?
Time stopped, and it seemed to take an eternity for her heart to start beating again.
Kagome went tense against the ground, too afraid to breathe, to speak, to even think. ?No.? It came out on a sharp intake of air. ?No!? she then screamed out, tears welling in her eyes. ?No? no, no,? she moaned, trying to turn over onto her side to curl into a ball.
The snakes withered against her wrists and arms, enjoying her pain, their tongues stroking along her skin, eager to pierce such tender flesh, eager to watch it fill with fluid and blood as the poison flowed through her bloodstream.
They were hungry.
Souta threw his head back once again, laughing out at how pathetic she was. Kagome sobbed openly, screaming her anguish, her back arching up off the ground, her head tilted back. She felt her heart break in half, the sting causing her upper torso to go completely numb. She tried to twist her body around, to somehow throw him off and be free, but it was to no avail.
?He called for her, over,? Souta murmured menacingly, enjoying her screams, ?and over, and over. He begged me not to take his life. It felt good, to hear him beg, to have him at my mercy.?
?You?re lying!? Kagome half spat, half sobbed. Souta smirked, tilting his head to the side, his eyes staring into hers.
?I will make you beg, priestess.? Souta sneered. ?I will make you regret ever being reincarnated, ever being born. You will beg me for mercy, and as I fill your veins with poison, and as you struggle to grasp your last breath, I will have the last laugh. It will be my pleasure, just as it had been mine when I had killed him.?
Kagome shook her head. ?I will find him; he isn?t dead. There?s no way you could?ve just ? killed him that easily! Inuyasha! Inuyasha!? She called for him almost as if she knew he would hear her and come running to her rescue. But times were different now...
Souta?s upper lip curled back in disgust, his fangs gleaming briefly as lightning filled the room. ?I will kill you the same way I did him.? The ground trembled beneath her as thunder ruled the skies. The rain fell harder, the sound a heavy constant drumming from above. Souta shifted sideways. The snakes covering her left wrist parted, revealing pale skin.
The room exploded in a bright white light. Jagged claws flew across the sky. The clap of thunder was deafening.
Kagome held her breath, her eyes wide.
The moment his teeth pierced her flesh, entered like a hot knife slicing through butter, her mind went blank. She was unconscious to the snakes slithering along her body. All she could see was the image of him laying on the ground, battered and bloodied, his white hair matted in crimson and dirt. A sharp pain at the hollow of her neck jolted her back into the present. Kagome opened her mouth to cry out, but the sound caught in her throat. Scales skimmed over her collarbone, gliding up the length of her neck until she felt the trembling breath breathe across her swollen lips.
Very slowly she brought her eyes level with the reptile hovering above her mouth.
?Don?t do this,? she breathed out, afraid to move. She whimpered faintly, her head growing light. A light sweat broke out on her body. She began to gasp for air, choking, whimpering. Souta pulled away from her wrist, shifting back to hover above her.
Two trails of crimson ran freely down her wrist, the bright color going in contrast with her ashen skin. Kagome inhaled abruptly, only to shudder as she exhaled. Her eyes were beginning to grow heavy. She could feel her heartbeat decrease. It was too painful to think, to even inhale. She longed to simply close her eyes and sleep. The snakes gradually lessened on her wrists and arms, sliding back into Souta?s arms until his hands were back to normal.
He leaned over her, watching her hooded eyes, watched as they glazed over. ?I want you to beg,? he hissed quietly. Kagome didn?t respond. Souta looked to the pair at the stairs, holding their eyes for a moment before looking back to the girl on the ground. ?I want to hear you scream,? he continued, slowly standing off of her.
Her eyes rolled back into her head.
?That is enough.? Came a sharp voice.
?It was not enough to kill her!? Souta snarled, coming to his full height. The remainder of the snakes moved off her lower torso and legs, joining their master, becoming one with him once more. ?She is merely unconscious; we could not risk her going through the well.?
Nabeshima, the female, standing on the left unfolded her arms from under her breasts. She moved down the stairs slowly, coming to a stop just at Kagome?s head. Crouching, she peered into the pale face. ?You will get your chance to hear her scream, to make her bleed more. Now, however, we need her alive.? Nabeshima stroked a hand over Kagome?s cheek, using her nail to trace the welt, scraping at the caked blood.
?Ryorokuro, you know now what needs to be done.? Nabeshima stood slowly. She tilted her head back, looking up at the dark ceiling. Lightning lit the room, the sound of thunder far off in the distance. Souta watched her in silence except for the occasional soft hiss of his tongue slithering past his lips.
Ryorokuro nodded curtly before shuffling out of the shrine. Nabeshima brought her eyes sharply to Souta. Her upper lip curled in disdain. ?I thought I had told you not to finish him off. It was a strict order, one even someone as simple-minded as you could?ve followed. Next time you are commanded, you will do as you are told. Or it will be you who will do the begging and screaming, struggling to grasp your last breath.?
?You would risk him venturing here? Is that what you wanted? We have the priestess. The half-breed is dead!?
?Why did you kill him?? Nabeshima demanded, folding her arms back under her breasts.
?You know why!? Souta spat, his eyes narrowing dangerously. ?Naraku was too weak to finish him off. That dog slaughtered Naraku himself! THE great Naraku!? Souta bared his fangs, the clear fluid trickling off his chin. ?We have done what he could never do.?
?This is NOT about Naraku! He is a failure among us; you are forbidden from ever using his name,? Nabeshima retorted heatedly. She gestured absently to Kagome on the ground, and turned to head for the stairs. ?Pick her up and carry her out. Our next mission is to be completed by dawn. If it is incomplete, you of all beings know the punishment dealt, and it will be dealt accordingly.?
?Yes ? Mistress??

Oh my! I'm so glad to see another inu chapter up! *dances* It was such a pulling and entrancing read. Those names! They just give new life to the characters. And...ryorokuro, he freaks me out like...like...Samara from The Ring. He is just the shudder inducing. Excellent chapter! And Inu! He can't be dead! He just can't! And I refuse to believe he called for kikyou. I will not. *rocks back and forth* This chapter has so many secrets waiting to be answered. And what will happen next? Why do they need her alive? Is Inu really at the bottom of the well? The tension you created in this chapter was astonishing. I was scared as I imagine Kagome being. I only didn't feel the pain. Note to self: Let's not be reincarnated, mmkay?
Once again, loved it! I hope you get a chapter/story out every now and then. I love reading your works!

This was awesome. I have to agree with Mel on the ryoro guy. He does seem strange. Speaking of strange though, Souta! What the hell is wrong with him? Well obviously something if he is trying to kill Kagome. Hm...or was that his intent all along. ^ ^ This is a great piece of work ya got going here Leia. It's a puzzle with missing pieces.
Can't wait for more to fill the puzzle.

I can't stop YELLING I'm so EXCITED!!! AND CONFUSED!!! AND ITCHY!!! (The highly disgusted feeling of having swarms of snakes crawling on your person will do that to you...it's not a disease...I swear...)
