?Aleta??
?I can?t, Jiro. I?ll meet you back at 19:00 hours.?
Silence crackled gently as Duo hung his head and headed back to Zech?s. Hilde was hiding something. He wasn?t sure what, but he knew he wasn?t going to like it. He turned to go.
?And Jiro??
?Yeah.?
?I love you.?
His spirits sunk even further as he made his way back to Zech?s. He mulled over why Hilde would refuse to come back. ?Something must be important. Otherwise she wouldn?t stay. Good head, if not a stubborn one, on her shoulders. There sure are times I regret running into her...but God, I think she saved me.?
Upon reaching the manor, Duo paused. He was uncertain he wanted to enter again. The thought of Noin and Zechs hoping he had brought Hilde back with him...and the fact that he failed didn?t sit well. Slowly he entered, his presence echoing through the house.
?She didn?t come back, did she??
Duo turned to meet Zechs?s eyes. The older man was drinking still, his eyes beginning to glaze. ?What?s it to you??
?Noin didn?t either.?
This startled Duo. ?You said she was cheering for me.?
?I knew my wife in more ways than one.?
?Knew??
?Mars claimed her a little while back. It was reported as a brain aneurysm. I didn?t believe it. Weeks later, intel arrived stating that a new faction was beginning to grow. And here we are now.?
?Sorry.?
?Sorry doesn?t bring her back. Nothing will. But we can work to bring forth justice.?
?You sound like Wufei.?
Zechs let his cold eyes burn through the braided man. ?Do you even care??
Silence took over, both men staring into worlds unseen. ?I?ll let her stay.?
?I was hoping you would say that.?
Duo had made his way to the guest room, while Zechs had returned to the living room. Playing with the ends of his braid, Duo fought with himself over letting her stay. ?It has to be her choice,? he told himself slowly.
The sunlight regulators had turned away the brilliance of day and slowly faded the evening to a void black. Hilde still hadn?t returned, but Duo convinced himself that she was still busy. She had to be. He couldn?t loose her a second time. That would prove too much for him to handle. And what would be left of the man.
After midnight, he began to pace the black carpet of the room. Every possible situation popped into his head and taunted him. Desperate hope clung to any and every possibility that she was still alive.
Some time during his pacing, he had fallen on the bed. He was startled awake by a sharp knock at the door. Pushing some bangs off of his forehead, he sat up and answered the door. Outside, it was Zechs. ?Yeah, what is it?? Duo asked sleepily, scratching his stomach.
?I can?t get radio communication.?
?What?? Duo cast the older man a curious glare.
?Aleta, I lost radio contact. I haven?t heard from her in 4 hours. And no incoming data is being received. Something happened, Duo. Something went terribly wrong.?
Duo?s eyes widened in shocked terror. His hand shook into a fist and his features went from slack to hard. ?How could you let her do this?? he asked, his violet eyes shooting up to meet Zechs?s.
?Come down stairs. We?ll talk there.?
?I don?t want to talk down stairs, I want answers now, dammit.?
?Duo, please. We need to talk in the parlor.?
Duo shot his hand forth and grabbed the collar of the blonde?s shirt. ?Talk now.?
