Chapter One ? Unpredictable

I would?ve liked to consider myself a normal human being, but things as of late had begun to make me assume otherwise. So far my true appearance was unknown; what everyone was presented with, it was what they got. No one knew a thing about me, not even my own family. Secrets were a thing I was good at keeping, no matter what happened, and those involved...

Thanking the doctor, I folded the prescription, pushing it into my handbag, and left the offices. It was midday, almost 4pm. I knew I was going to be late for dinner, and despite the fact that I could feel my stomach eating itself, this was far more important then eating. I was protecting myself, my friends, and most of all ? my family.

If they knew of the truth, then things would get quite out of hand, and I wasn?t entirely sure they would be able to fix it. Not only would they over worry about me, they wouldn?t be able to keep me safe; that was something I wanted to worry about on my own accord. Let me look after myself; I was quite capable, I just never showed it...

As I stepped out into the warm afternoon sun, I slipped the bulky sunglasses on, and subconsciously brought a hand up to smooth down the hair at the top of my head. A sigh of relief left my lips.

So far so good.

I had five minutes to walk down to the train station, but the walk wouldn?t take that long, it was only just around the corner. Handbag in hand, I boarded the train, taking a seat near the front, close to the driver. I hated crowded places; they made me uncomfortable and quite snappy. Sure, I was a nice, friendly girl, but I had my reasons for being snappy.

The old woman who sat down beside me smiled kindly. I tried my best to ignore her, glancing at her every second or so from the corner of my sunglasses. Finally, I just couldn?t take it anymore, and I turned to smile back at her.

Deep golden eyes gazed back, and the long streaming white hair framing a strong, yet wrinkled, face startled me. I was startled, and it must?ve shown; my mouth had fallen open. I snapped it shut immediately, seeing the smile broaden on her thin lips. My eyes shot to the top of her head. I felt faint at the sight.

?But you?re??

The old woman lifted a hand, reaching out to touch the top of my head and, swiftly, I slapped her hand away, leaping out of the chair. I turned to the driver, ignoring her raspy laughter, and demanded he let me off at the next stop.

Was it really possible? I asked myself, chewing my bottom lip.

As I hopped off the train, I gathered my hair, pinning it at the back of my neck with an elastic, and broke into a sprint. I reached the shops within fifteen minutes of their closing time.

?I need a pair of these,? I murmured, pulling out the slip of paper from my handbag. I handed it to the dark skinned woman behind the counter, and she gave me a smile and a nod before disappearing into the back.

She was back within seconds, the fairly small box in hand. Carefully she handed it to me, glancing to the round huge glasses I wore. She made no comment, merely smiled as she brought up the total at the cash register. I handed her the money, telling her to keep the change, and left the building without another word, ignoring the farewell she had bid me.

I was edgy, I didn?t know why.

Something in the air was making my skin crawl, the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. It was making me quite the uncomfortable one, I could tell you that much.

Thirty minutes later, I laid myself out on my bed, closing my eyes, and rubbed them. I was so tired; my sleeping patterns not quite the same as they used to be. I blamed the Well, along with everyone who lived on the other side of it; that, and my schoolwork.

There was a knock at the door. ?Who is it?? I called out, sitting upright. The box I had balanced on my stomach fell to the floor with a soft thud and I swore loudly, crouching for it.

?Honey,? my mother called back, her voice soft and kind, ?dinner?s ready. Wash up before you come down, we have company.?

I could hear her slippers slapping softly along the hardwood floors, then down the steps. I smiled faintly. Everything about my mother left me feeling warm inside; it was something I couldn?t properly explain, but it had something to do with being loved dearly, the feeling of being wanted and not worthless. Looking down to the box in my hands, the smile slowly slipped off my lips and I sighed, running a hand down my face.

?I guess I have to wash up,? I muttered to no one in particular, standing off the bed. As I passed the door, I faltered in step, and tilted my face upwards, taking a sniff of the air. I grit my teeth, feeling annoyance wash over me. ??dinner smells ? wonderful,? I ground out through tightly clenched teeth, suddenly not feeling hungry anymore. ?Thanks for the warning, Mom.?

I entered the bathroom adjoining my room, moving to the mirror that was spread out along the length of the wall. The counter was clear, black in color and wide, the sink alabaster white, the faucet and handles silver. Opening the box, I carefully pulled out the contents, throwing out the small bits of folded papers containing the instructions, and preceded to unscrew the caps off both the tiny containers.

There was another knock at my bedroom door, and I ignored it, squeezing some cool clear sanitizer fluid that had come with the package onto a finger. I dipped my finger into one of the containers, slowly extracting the clear flimsy disk that clung to the pad of my forefinger.

?Hang on!? I shouted, exasperated, the knocking more insistent this time. I kept my attention on the task at hand, and once I was finished, I put everything into the medicine cabinet overtop of the toilet.

As I walked into my bedroom, I stopped dead in my tracks. ?What do you think you?re doing?? I demanded and, again, my skin began to crawl.

***

The tall male lifted a brow, looking at her from his relaxed position leaning up against her wall. ?Your mother has been worrying over you; I came up to see why you?re taking so bloody long,? he replied in a hard voice. He unfolded his arms, and caught her glance towards his chest.

?You ? took off your robes. Why?? Her eyes lifted, met his. She began to feel nervous in his presence, alone with him in her bedroom.

The red robes were missing, and he was only dressed in the white undershirt he usually wore beneath them, his pants still hanging off his hips, his feet bare. The sleeves were rolled to his elbows, showing off the muscles in his forearms, and the thick, sinewy cords rippled as the hanyou shrugged a shoulder idly, one of the white ears at the top of his head twitching.

?Your mother asked me to.? He lifted his face slightly, sniffing the air, and his eyes settled back on her. Something flashed deep within them.

Instantly she moved to the door, her heart nearly in her throat. He was faster, grabbing her by the wrist before her fingers could even skim over the curve of her door handle.

?Something?s ? different.? He sniffed again, his ears twitching, and his hand tightened on her. When had she become so fast? he thought, looking at her.

?You?re imagining things, Inuyasha,? she scolded, running her tongue over her canines in an absent gesture. ?It has to be just my shampoo; I changed bran??

?Will you shut up?? he growled, glowering down at her. Leaning down, he sniffed again, closer to her earlobe, and she tried to edge away. She didn?t get far, her back bumping into the closed door.

He moved with her, bracing his weight against his other hand, which he placed next to her head, leaning down further to nuzzle his nose into the side of her neck.

?Stop it.? Higurashi Kagome grit her teeth, feeling her cheeks warm at how close he was. She tried to tug her wrist from his grasp, but froze, as she felt his hand at the back of her head. Inuyasha knew his sense of smell was excellent, and that he could sniff out just about everything; everything except what was bothering him at that moment.

He forced her head down, sniffing over the top of her head, and pushed his nose into her hair. Her breath caught in her throat. The smell of fear filled his nostrils; it oozed out from her pores almost instantly.

Kagome managed to pull away her head back, flattening herself into the door. ?Sit, boy!?

In a flash of white and red, and a startled cry, he fell face-first to the floor, and at that moment she used it as her chance to escape him, leaving the room feeling shaken, but a weak smile of relief curved her lips.

Interesting... I like the vague way you're describing what's going on. It's setting up for Inu's reaction wonderfully. I can't wait to see what dog-boy going to say about this twist of fate, or how many (Sit, boy!)'s he gets for it.

Awesome start! :salute:

You have GOT to update this one on a regular basis. Okay, I'm thinking this is a Kagome-turns-hanyou/demon story, or maybe she always was one, but the way you've constructed it, the twists and turns and straight-up stalling (which kept me on pins and needles, btw!), is the most original and captivating way I've ever seen it presented. And knowing you, Leia, there's something much deeper to this revelation about Kagome than meets the eye. With your gift of surprising and exciting plot bunnies I have no idea where this is headed, but I can not WAIT to find out!!!!! This one has me hook, line and sinker!!!!
