Belonging

The Things Stupidity can Lead to?

Kagome surveyed the room that was behind and to the side of the restaurant. It really wasn't that much to look at. No bigger than a large attic, it had beanbags and chairs sparingly situated around it. Dust layered almost everything and stains splattered the floor to create a beautifully disgusting painting no museum would want. The stains varied in size, color and intensity. Each made of its own mysterious material that Kagome would never want to know.

She had envisioned more than dust and bad lighting.

Walking in with her odd couple, no one had paid much attention to her. And Kagome realized that was exactly what she wanted at the moment. She didn't want anyone coming up to her, anyone noticing the apprehensive look in her eyes and the twitch of her right eyebrow. She was fine having them think she was as bored as Yura who, at the moment, was combing her dark hair with a comb Kagome knew a girl like Yura would have never paid for.

Not including them, there were five boys and five girls in the room. Each person talking to someone or in a little group?except for the young girl in the corner opposite her and Yura. She was sitting there alone, and the way people's eyes would shift towards her every now and then, Kagome thought maybe that she was a person who shouldn't be there.

Maybe I shouldn't be here?

Stupid feelings were at it again. Telling her to turn and go, unfortunately her feelings had no sense of timing. Kagome turned to look out the tiny opening beside them that constituted as a window. The moonlight illuminated the ice that hung like tiny daggers from the limbs of naked trees. The young girl tightened her hold around her self. It was so cold; she couldn't go back out there right now. She had to wait for someone to take her home.

"Are you cold Kagome?" Hojo asked coming up behind her. He had left her and Yura in the corner to talk to someone. Before she could say anything though she felt the heavy sensation of his jacket being draped over her shoulders. She just turned to face him and smiled.

Hojo: the ever gentleman.

"Hojo" Kagome began while sitting down on the bare thread carpet, "why are you here?" She had asked that simple question before but he never gave her an answer. And with the look on his face now, Kagome thought she would have to wait a little longer for that answer. This "here" that he had chosen was layered with dust and depression. Depression was a good word for it, not rebellion, not power or even value?just sadness. Sadness from not being taken care of, depression from the spirit of the youths occupying the area. She could feel the pain and delusion radiating from many of them. Her feelings were at it again.

Dropping down to sit on the floor with her, Kagome wondered if maybe she should stop asking that question. Hojo looked at her a bit before speaking, "I don't really know. Things just seem better like this." He gestured his head toward the group of people in the center of the room. "I liked school?I still do. It's just well at least here I count more."

"But Hojo it doesn't really mean--" Kagome began but stopped when the screen door slid open.

The sound of the room died in almost a moment. Kagome turned her head towards the door and found herself staring at Sesshoumaru, the leader of the Demons.

Sesshoumaru stepped in and looked as if it was normal for the room to suddenly stop when he appeared. No twitch in his smooth face seemed to show any thought that this occurrence was odd, unwanted or even appreciated.

Kagome glanced around the room and saw everyone suddenly switching their attention to this person. Conversations and thoughts dying on the lips of people who normally wouldn't care what was happening around them. Even Yura had turned her attention to him. Kagome had to admit she was very impressed (and somewhat intimidated) by a guy who could command a room in nothing but a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. His shoulder length hair glinted in the dim light and the strips of magenta on his cheeks were bright against his pale skin.

Yura hadn't given her any information about the leader, but Kagome didn't know if that was because Yura didn't know anything or she felt like it wasn't any of Kagome's business. She knew he was older than anyone in the room was. From talk around the circles of people who didn't know anything other than what TV showed them, she knew he had taken over on the eve of his 19th birthday, after a man named Nakumoto was never found.

He was walking through the room, seemingly looking through everyone but Kagome couldn't help but think maybe she had seen his eye shift towards her when he passed their little corner. The silence remained until he dragged an unused seat to the front and sat. He began speaking and Kagome couldn't help but realize the total attention he commanded from every one including her.

"No one can mess up tonight. I don't care what excuse you give me, you will not want to come back here if you don't do your job." He said stoically, looking around the room at every person.

Nice little opening, not as friendly as something Kagome would have started with but everyone is different. The members were nodding the head in agreement with the terms set. Kagome could already see what Sesshoumaru's most powerful tool was: fear. He was using fear to make sure people did their job, that nothing was messed up tonight.

Sesshoumaru was about to open his mouth again to speak but stopped and looked at the door as it slid open again. Kagome turned her head to see a girl with intense eyes and an angry frown walk in followed by the only person Yura had willingly given her information about.

"You're late Naraku." Sesshoumaru said a slight rumble setting off the warning in his voice.

"You have more important things to worry about than me Sesshoumaru." Naraku replied unalarmed at the not so subtle warning. Instead of sitting like the girl he had walked in with had, he stood in the back by the door leaning against it looking expectantly at Sesshoumaru for him to continue.

The leader started speaking but Kagome wasn't listening; instead she was studying the one who seemed almost as dangerous as Sesshoumaru. His hair was black as night and seemed to disappear with the darkness as the light of the room gradually faded. His skin was?jagged. Unlike Sesshoumaru's, Naraku's face had many scars imprinted upon it. Yura had told her Naraku got into fights?a lot. A long scar trailed down the right side of his face, starting at his cheek and not ending till the chin. The scars aged him to the point that he looked even a bit older than Sesshoumaru. Maybe he knew that. Maybe that was why he was the only one in the room smirking as Sesshoumaru prattled on about honor and missions.

Kagome was still staring when she saw the object of her attention turn his head towards her. She then promptly switched her attention to Sesshoumaru, the safer of the two at the moment.

"You won't fail me. You won't fail this name. This is when you prove you deserve to be apart of the Demons. You don't do this you are worthless. You don't belong here." The ending of the statement was tainted with malice and although there was no expression to his face, his eyes told the disgust he felt.

He shifted his golden gaze to Yura who at the moment, looked the most attentive Kagome had ever seen her. "Yura take Kagura with you. Stay at Akuma as long as possible."

Akuma? That club?

Akuma was a club in Shibuya. Kagome had never been for the fact that it didn't open until 11 PM and didn't close until the trains began again the next day at 5 AM and also because she didn't have anyone to go with.

What was there? What was Yura going to do? Who was Kagura? What was happening? Kagome was confused but then she had just dropped in. Kagome highly doubted Yura would tell her anything and guessing from the way people were acting, she doubted she would get anything from anyone else either. Maybe Hojo?but then maybe not. Secrets were something Hojo could be good at keeping if he thought it was necessary.

Should I even know? Do I want to know?

Kagome wasn't sure she wanted to be pulled into this. Could she even be pulled into this? Would Yura, Hojo or even Sesshoumaru allow it? Sesshoumaru didn't seem like the person to let anyone not in the gang to be allowed to go on ?jobs or whatever they were doing. Things were so vague right now.

Thinking so hard, Kagome didn't hear the last of Sesshoumaru's words. It wasn't until she felt a hand on her shoulder and saw people moving that she realized that something was happening. She looked up to see Hojo staring down at her, a smile on his face, "Let's go. I'll take you home."

Before Kagome really knew what she doing her head was shaking in disagreement; "I don't want to." She stood to face him ignoring the other people that were finally seeing her, Yura stood beside Hojo a look of boredom placed on her face once again.

Hojo was shaking his head, "Kagome I don't think you should go with us. Tonight is important?"

There it was again, some clue of intrigue that she wasn't sure she could really let slip away. She couldn't go home right now. What was there? Remnants of an argument better left forgotten or Souta who was probably sleeping in her room waiting for her to come back home. She felt herself being selfish but she would feel guilty about it tomorrow. Tomorrow everything would go back to normal and she would just be Kagome. But tonight she could look at something different that she would never be able to see again.

Kagome could feel herself growing defiant and the urge to get her way grow. "I can stay out of the way." She said looking at the odd couple. "I can take care of myself."

The girl who had walked in with Naraku walked over to them. "Hojo, Kai wants to talk to you." She said gesturing towards a portly boy with bad skin.

Hojo looked over to the boy and then back to Kagome. With a small sigh and a look of resignation he spoke to Kagome, "Kagome don't go anywhere I'll be right back and then take you home." Kagome just nodded not wanting to argue with him anymore. She hated arguing. Watching him walk away, Kagome's ears perked at hearing the girl speak again but to Yura. "Yura we're going." Her voice was deep and almost surprised Kagome because she looked only to be slightly older than Kagome. But that wasn't why Kagome was suddenly interested.

"Lemme go with you Yura." Kagome whispered pleadingly her eyes twitching back and forth between her and her other half.

For a person who had the ability to give a blank face in any situation, Yura's features suddenly gleamed into a smile of red lips and eyes with a life behind them. "Why?"

"Because I treat you better than anybody else at school??" Kagome said quickly her breath a whisper. That was true. Most people at school stirred clear of Yura who had a knack for making people's skin crawl --including Kagome, but she was far too nice to not speak to Yura.

Kagome's eyes starred at the back of Hojo's head in anxiousness. If Hojo turned to look at her he might know something was?no wait this was Hojo.

Yura shook her head, her black hair bouncing. "I don't care about that." Kagome was about to open her mouth but Yura spoke before she could. "I'll let you go but I really don't know what I want. So I guess you'll just owe me?" she said with a shrug as if what she said wasn't like signing a deal with the devil.

"Okay Okay." Kagome said still staring at the back of Hojo's head. She felt Yura pulling her out towards the door and away from the only person who actually cared about what happened to her.

The city lights burned in the night causing the city to seem more like it was morning than after dark. Kagome leaned her forehead against the tinted window staring out at the muted colors. The streets were nearly deserted with people straggling around the walkways stumbling with a boisterous smile. The roads were nearly silent even though they were swelling with cars.

The car had been nearly silent for the near hour drive to Shibuya. The only sound of lazy lyrics to cover the snort of the driver a girl named Kagura. Kagura had been less than happy to Kagome being pulled along with Yura. But her incessant whines of telling Kagome to go home or stay with Hojo were silenced when Yura had threatened Kagura.

"Shut up Kagura."

"Why? She doesn't need to come along. She'll only get in the way."

"Because if she doesn't come I may have to talk to Sesshoumaru about your less than?unwavering loyalty."

Kagura had shut up after that.

There had been tension because of Kagura's anger but Kagome could swear there was fear radiating from the girl sitting beside her. It was the one who was sitting alone in the corner of the room. Yura had told her the girl's name was Ayame but other than that she had stayed silent. She hadn't spoken a word and only stared out her window.

Watching glowing signs and lighted alleys pass by Kagome couldn't help but wonder what she was doing.

"What's in Shibuya?" she asked out loud but still facing the window.

"The Akuma club." Yura answered. She herself was leaned over fiddling with the CD player trying to find a better song. "Kagura do you have anymore Gackt CDs, I've already listened to this one enough."

"What's at Akuma?"

"None of your business." Kagura said sharply her eyes faced to the road.

"We are a distraction." Yura said answered before turning back to the CDs. Kagome took that as being the only answer she would be getting.

Twenty minutes of silence and looking out the window getting a crick in her neck and Kagome was about to scream. They finally parked in a tiered parking garage. Cars littered the silent and empty garage. Kagome couldn't help the beat of her heart as it started faster. So she was here about to go into a club and do? well whatever a distraction would do.

Her hand was already on the car door handle when Kagome cut her action with a sharp order; "YOU are not going anywhere." Kagome looked over and saw everyone but Yura was starring at her. Kagura's eyes were gleaming at her under the dim garage lights and Kagome realized just what a wilting flower felt like. But Kagome was not about to be forced to--

"You shouldn't go Kagome." Yura said now looking around the car. "You're too much a liability." She glanced over to Ayame. "But you can look after her."

Hm... I honestly don't know what to make of this... obviously it's AU, and interesting, in its own way. :) But keep it up, I would love to know what happens in later chapters. :)
