Key to Heaven, Chapter 2: Relena


Relena flicked on the lights in her room and kicked off her shoes, yawning as she walked over to throw the doors to her balcony wide open. She shrugged off the fitted, cream-colored blazer she'd had on all day and shook her hair out of the low ponytail that had since loosened. She sat down at her vanity table and brushed out her hair in front of the large, oval mirror. She sighed, thinking about the events of the day. Work for her mars terra-forming project had been forced to be put on standstill because of some L5 representative who complained of debris from the construction crashing into the L5 colony. The Earth Sphere had stopped construction until inspections have been made. As far as Relena knew (and she knew about everything that goes on on Mars), there have been no excess material from the construction. Everything had been carefully measured out and organized, so that nothing would be wasted. The representative probably just wanted the insurance money.

Argh. The insolence of some people.

Relena put down her brush, then looked up to see her reflection staring back at her. She started, startled at her reflection. She brought a dainty, well-manicured hand to her face, surprised at how...OLD her eyes looked. She had the same eyes the ex-gundam pilots had. Sad, wise...eyes that have seen too much. She remembers seeing Quatre just the other week at the war orphans charity ball, and she recalls when she commented on his eyes, how they looked different than everyone else's. "Eyes that have seen too much," he'd said, smiling gently as he brushed a strand of hair out of her face. "You have them, too, 'Lena. We all do. It's a premature aging that could have only come from something like a war." All of them had smooth, young, pretty faces. But their eyes...they were ancient. She forced herself to look away, and found the reflection of the first bear Heero gave her sitting peacefully on her bed. Behind it were the open balcony doors, framing a deep indigo sky dotted with diamonds.

"Oh, Heero," she breathed, tracing the bear's reflection on the mirror. A girlish giggle erupted from the depths of her throat, and she smiled at herself. She stood and threw herself on her bed, bringing the bear close to her chest. 'I'm just a child,' she thought, retying the red bow around the bear's neck for the billionth time. 'This bear...it keeps on reminding me, day after day. How weary I would be, if I were without it.'

Her videophone blipped, and she reached over to turn it on.

"Quatre!" she cried eagerly, her eyes lighting up in a genuine smile. "I was just thinking of you!" she said as she brought her legs over the side of the bed to see him better.

Quatre smiled. A sad sort of smile which made Relena's heart ache for him. "I've missed that smile, 'Lena," he said, his voice sounding a little robotic on the vidphone.

"I've missed YOU."

"And I, you," he returned sincerely. Then his smile diminished, and he looked almost guilty. "We...saw Heero today."

"You...you told me you would," she said, her grin faltering. "How is he, Quatre? He's well, isn't he?"

"Yes, very well," he answered, and she sighed in relief. She worried about him all the time. "He's majoring in computer engineering, did I tell you that? He's a genius."

"That's wonderful." A pause. "Is he...Is he happy, Quatre?"

Quatre studied her for a moment before answering. "Yes. I think he IS...to an extent."

"Good," she murmured, a little sad. "That's all that matters."

Quatre tilted his head a little, his expression questioning. "You...don't want to see him?"

She chuckled half-heartedly. "Oh, Quatre, I do. Lord knows, I do! But...he's happy. If he's happy in his new life, then I am too. I don't want him to suffer anymore than he has. His job is done...he shouldn't have to do anything anymore. I want him to see for himself the peaceful world he'd help create."

Quatre shook his head. "How many times have you told us those same exact words, 'Lena?" He gave her a gentle look. "And...you're happy, even though he's not with you."

"Even if he's not near me, as long as he's happy. It's all I've ever wanted."

"So...he still refuses to see me?" she asked after a pause.

Quatre nodded. "He used the same excuse. He thinks he'd be the end of you."

Relena sat quietly for a moment.

"Relena, please. Go see him. You know you want to. I hate to see you both suffer like this."

"Oh, but Quatre...he doesn't...he doesn't feel..."

"Don't start, 'Lena," he interrupted sternly. "The love you share...it's plain as day. Go see him. You still have that address I gave you?"

Her eyes glanced at a piece of paper on the table beside her vidphone. "Yes."

"Good. I'll have Trowa talk to your secretary. I'm canceling all your appointments for tomorrow."

"But Quatre! I--" she began, but his image had disappeared, leaving a black, blank screen. She sighed, then took the piece of paper in her hand and stared at it. She brought it to her heart and closed her eyes. 'Oh, Heero,' she thought. 'To see you...just one more time...it's all I could ever ask for.'
