Key to Heaven Chapter 1/?

Post by Wild Cyan »

Title: Key to Heaven
Author: Wild Cyan
Rating: G
Coupling: HYxRP
Disclaimer: *siigh* If only.
Short Summary: It's the year AC 198, and the g-boys are living in a world without war. Heero's in college, and Relena's the Foreign Minister, two seemingly different worlds. Will they ever see that they're meant for each other???
A/N: Yay! My first chapter fic ever!!! This is the first chapter of my baby, "Key to Heaven" (though I'm not entirely pleased with the title...it may change). The first four chapters are already finished, but I won't be posting Chapters 3 and 4 until later. Chapter 2 will be posted, but we'll consider this as a sort of...sneak peek, if anything. It still needs a little tuning up, especially some of the details. It doesn't have a definite plot...plotless little thing! *cuddles fic affectionately* But enjoy anyway. ^_^
Warning: Sorry, sorry...but yeah, some warnings...there may be, no, there WILL be references to Endless Waltz, Blind Target, Episode Zero, and Ground Zero. I wanted to be as true to the Gundam Wing universe as I could. I've tried to keep the characters IC as much as I could, but further along there will be some OOCness, but people change, right? ^_^ So yeah. But don't let any of that stop you. ^_^

Key to Heaven, Chapter 1: Heero

Heero loosened his tie and ran a hand through his already-disheveled hair. He'd had an incredibly boring day. Barely eighteen, he found that college wasn't what he thought it would be. School had always been a nuisance more than a difficulty, and college was the worst of them all. His classes were taught by professors who tittered or droned, seemingly enjoying the sound of their own voices. He once again proved he was a genius when he realized his classes themselves were a cinch, and he could have passed every one of them without attending any. But he did, anyway, to keep from drawing attention to himself.

But he couldn't seem to be inconspicuous no matter how hard he tried.

He couldn't help looking bored when his teachers lectured on things he already knew from when he was a child. He couldn't help being so fast in basketball that the spectators and players alike would have to pause to scratch their head and wonder how in the world he got the ball without anyone seeing a thing. He couldn't help death glaring people he'd find irritating; stuck-up girls who craved for his attention, gossiping classmates who wouldn't keep their mouth shut and asked too many questions...

He passed a dorm with a 'Do Not Disturb' sign hanging from the doorknob, and rolled his eyes when he heard a girl's muffled moans from inside the door.

'I guess Paul got with that cashier at the cafe,' he thought with lazy indifference, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. His dormitory, which he shared with a college freshman named Seth, was at the very end of the whitewashed hall.

He'd gone two years living in the peaceful world Relena said he'd help create. He'd lived without war, Gundams, or missions for longer than he'd thought he'd be able to take.

But he DEFINITELY hasn't lost his touch.

He knew there was something...odd the moment he touched the knob to his door. He paused suddenly, his hand wrapped around the doorknob. He stood unmoving for a moment, a slight narrowing of his eyes the only change in his stoic expression. His hand loosened its grasp as he slowly, excruciatingly leaned away from the door. In a blink of an eye he became a silent figure speeding down the hallway before disappearing around the corner.

Determining which window was his from the outside of the building took his mind barely a moment. Climbing the wall was a less easy task, but didn't take him more than forty-five seconds. Crouching on the impossibly narrow sill with almost cat-like agility, Heero opened the sliding windows with the tips of his fingers. It moved so slowly and softly that it could have been opened by the wind, if it was possible for the wind to open sliding windows.

His room was just as he left it; the lights closed and the room surprisingly dark for so early in the evening. However, the darkness did not keep him from seeing and reacting to the thin wooden stick that came swinging down from the blackness beside the inside of the window, aimed dangerously for his skull. He grabbed the weapon as it rushed by him and jumped noiselessly into the room. He took it with both his hands and jerked it towards him, forcing his attacker to stumble forward.

Amateur.

His foot collided with the guy's gut, emitting a strangled "Oof!" from his attacker, who, from the telltale thud on his carpeted floor, immediately fell to the ground.

Then, the lights flickered on.

Heero stared at the broom in his hands and looked up at the four occupants in the room, the expression on his face only of mild surprise.

"Heero," Quatre greeted him with his usual brilliant smile from the loveseat.

"Quatre," Heero returned. "Trowa." His head bobbed to the man leaning carelessly on the wall, who gave him a small smile in greeting. "Wufei?" The slight question in his voice revealed that Heero was, indeed, surprised to see the Chinese man standing at the door with his finger on the light switch.

Chang Wufei tilted his head in respect. To Heero, his humble gesture was as good as any apology. It even helped mend the rift between the two; the rift that had been left since the Mariemaeia coup. "You...haven't lost your touch, I see," Wufei said, flicking a hand at Heero's feet.

Because there lay Duo Maxwell, unconscious and drooling on Heero's plush, cream-colored carpeting.

Ten minutes later, the five ex-gundam pilots were sitting comfortably on the couch, the loveseat, and on the oversized chairs drinking sodas out of plastic tumblers and eating barbecue-flavored potato chips out of a plastic neon orange bowl.

"First you guys steal my gundam*, then you sneak into my college dormitory. What have I done to deserve this?" Heero asked, his eyes unconsciously twinkling with humor. Which everyone was, undoubtedly, surprised with.

"Did Heero Yuy just make a joke? Whoa," Duo exclaimed, mock swooning from his reclining position on the couch.

Heero shot him a glare, which Duo only laughed at, and said, "Just answer the question."

"It was the baka's idea," Wufei said as he gestured at Duo, his usually superior voice faltering. Heero realized that Wufei was being cautious with his words, clearly still aware of their penetrable relationship.

Duo opened his mouth to deny it, but at Trowa's pointed look he shrugged and said, "Just wanted to see ya, Hee-man."

Heero looked at him for a moment, then turned his attention to Quatre and Trowa, who were sitting together on the loveseat. "Why the theatrics, when you could have knocked on my door? You know you'd be welcome...you've visited me before. Even Seth's already used to you."

"We wanted to see if you've lost your touch," Duo piped up, grunting slightly as a sharp pain shot through his stomach. "And...you obviously haven't."

"Right," Heero said, obviously disbelieving as he leaned back in his chair. "You did NOT just come visit me to see if I could still detect if there were people in my room. And why didn't you fight better? I know you could have taken me on, even for a little while."

"What, me?" Duo said. "Well, yea...I didn't know you were going to be so violent about it," he winced as he rubbed his tummy.

"That's what you get for being a baka," Wufei hissed.

"Actually," Quatre interrupted as Duo opened his mouth for a retort, "we WERE going to call before we came, but..."

"...Duo wanted to play a little game," Trowa finished.

"Tro-man!" Duo whined, his eyes widening innocently. "I wanted to surprise him! Surprise!"

"By attacking me?"

"I--"

"It's about Relena, isn't it?" Heero said suddenly. The others looked up, clearly taken-aback.

"We should have known..." Quatre said, the shocked expression on his face giving way to a gentle, knowing smile.

"How DO you always know when it comes to Relena?" Duo asked, the mischievous look in his eyes suggesting that he already knew the answer to his own question. He already knew, of course. He just liked to irk Heero about it.

Heero didn't reply.

"Aww, is Heero blu-ushing?" Duo snickered from his couch. Heero had a sudden desire to hit him in the stomach again.

"Well, you'd be glad to know that your onna's not in any immediate danger," Wufei said, his eyes uncharacteristically soft.

"She's not my--!"

"We just came to convince you to come visit her, Heero," Trowa said.

"And before you say no," Quatre added quickly, "I want to know, what would it hurt, Heero? Why must you avoid her?"

"I'm not."

"Riight," Duo said, rolling his eyes. "And I'M a monkey's uncle."

"It's been over a year since you've spoken," Quatre said. "And do you know? When we all go visit her, she doesn't talk about you except to ask how you're doing, but you can tell she's hurt and wondering why you aren't there. "

"And you know why?" Duo smirked, and didn't wait for Heero to reply. "Because she lov--"

"Don't," Heero said, his face hardening.

"Why, Heero?" Duo taunted, the humor on his face fading fast. "What are you afra--"

"Heero, just once. Just come and see her once. For her birthday," Quatre said, his face sad.

Heero lowered his eyes. "You ask me this every time you visit. I'd create more problems for her than I'd solve."

"I recall you saying that once in the past*," Trowa murmured. "I do believe you're mistaken."

"And don't even say, 'I see her on tv,' because that does NOT count," Duo added.

"I saw her in person," Heero said, surprising them all again. "At her recent Mars Terra-Forming Project address here in L1. I was in the crowd."

"Did she SEE you?" Wufei asked.

"No," Heero admitted. "But I know she knew I was there." He paused, his eyes dimming.

"Oh, geez!" Duo said, shaking his head.

Trowa muffled a chuckle.

"Well," Quatre said, his voice heavy. "We've better get going. It was wonderful to see you, Heero. I just hope, Heero, that you'd reconsider."

Heero shook his head. "Quatre...my being near her can't possibly do her any good. In fact, I'll probably put her in danger. Like I said before, I am, and always will be, protecting her from afar."

When the others had gone, Heero stood alone at his window, not even noticing when Seth came home. Ever tactful Seth, realizing his roommate needed some alone-time, decided not to interfere.

Heero sighed. Why WAS he so afraid to speak to her? He'd watched her every time she was on the news. He'd hacked onto her security, so he'd know where she was wherever she went. When there was an assassination attempt he was the first to know about it, and alerted Lady Une and Preventers through a secured e-mail, who then had the assassins brought down before their plans were even finalized.

But it wasn't enough. He wanted to see her, he did...

Heero shook his head. He was a gundam pilot, a soldier, a killer. And she...she was a politician. An important figure. The MOST important, if nothing else. She told him once that he and the gundam pilots were the ones responsible for the present peace in the world. Perhaps, but SHE was the figure of peace. She was the one upholding it, keeping it. He can't endanger her by his presence. Who knew...he might have enemies; people who'd want revenge, people who'd want him dead. There were so many other reasons why he couldn't be with her. There were already so many attempts on her life. He just couldn't put her in any more danger.

'I promise I'd protect you,' he thought. 'And that includes protecting you from myself. It's...for the best, Relena. I wish you'd understand. It's for the best..'
