Ocean and Food One-Shot

Post by Kenhime »

Title: The Ocean and Food

Author: Kenhime

Genre: Humor/Romance

Disclaimer: I don?t own Gundam Wing *sigh*

Author?s Note: A very short light one-shot I wrote to take a break from the angst-ridden and serious Atonement. A little bit OOC for Relena, but she seemed a little too perfect in the anime. ^_^; Besides, the creators never really thought about the little quirks actual people have and I thought it would be interesting to make up one.

The Foreign Minister Darlian smiled at her secretary as she left the office. Her secretary raised her eyebrows in question, but her employer had already disappeared. The former princess abandoned elegance as she strode down the hallway, her heels clacking in rhythm down the marble floor. Her colleagues halted and stared in puzzlement as she passed them by, waving happily back at them. Before they could comprehend her jovial mood, she had already gone down the elevator.

?I get off early today!? she sang out, her fist raised high in triumph. Luckily enough, Relena had the elevator to herself. ?It has been a year, six months, a week, and three days since I have gotten off early.? She tapped her foot thoughtfully. ?Hmm...What should I do??

There were so many possibilities of spending the special time and she had forty-one floors to decide how. She blurted out loud her ideas and since no one was there, she answered them. One may think her schizophrenic, but she was too cheerful to care.

?How about taking a walk at the Crystal Grove Park??

?Nah...too fancy.?

?The tennis courts??

?Eh...too lazy.?

?The Twin Dragon Restaurant??

?Don?t feel like eating fancy Chinese food. Besides, I can?t read the menu.?

?The Ocean Cove Caf???

?Too expensive.?

?Hometown Buffet??

?Hey, I may be a pig, but I already ate a big lunch...?

A pause.

?Why am I asking myself for food? Maybe it?s just my subconscious telling me something.?

She stared down at her stomach and in morbid fascination, poked it. It jiggled like jello, responding to the poke with sounds of strange gurgling. A bead of sweat rolled down her temple as she realized that she had not gotten exercise for a long time.

?Getting fat was not in the job description.? If Heero could see her now, he would laugh. Well, probably not laugh, but he would still have this smirk on his face and his ocean eyes would twinkle in amusement.

Hmm...The ocean...

Then, an idea suddenly dawned on her like a great light on the horizon.

?The beach!?

It was a very clich?d suggestion, she had to admit, but because of the state of matters, it was the perfect choice. She could enjoy some bit of nature, exercise, and food, knowing full well that the docks had plenty of good seafood restaurants. With a well-timed ding, the elevator doors opened and Relena walked out of it with a very good sense of direction.

Two hours of driving, getting lost, and plenty of expletives later, the young eighteen-year-old arrived at her destination. By the time she had reached the beach, the sun was already beginning to set. The hues of orange, violet, and crimson tinted the clear blue sky, hints of the dark night colors spreading to take reign of time.

She couldn?t miss it, she told herself as she sat there in the car.

Suddenly, Relena scrambled out of the car, leaving her purse behind. In frenzy, she yanked off the heavy woolen scarf at her neck and the large overcoat, desperate to be free of movement. With a cry of glee, she took off her high heels and with both hands, threw it over her shoulder without a care. Shivering slightly in her blouse and skirt she had left, she was reminded that it was still cold despite the beginnings of spring.

She felt her bare feet tingle as it sunk into the warm silky sand. A laugh escaped her lips as she twirled around, her arms spread out to catch the caressing breeze. In her whirling dance, she stumbled into the shore, her feet splashing against the lukewarm waves.

?So beautiful...? she breathed. Relena stood there, ankle-deep in the water, watching as the sun dropped behind the mountains, the last rays of light lining the peaks. She couldn?t help but feel a sense of contentedness just seeing the sunset.

And a little bit nostalgic as well.

She could remember walking down the road so long ago, thinking about her birthday and father. She remembered seeing a lone prostrate figure on the shore and frantically went to help the poor person. And when she slipped the helmet off the soldier?s head, she saw the boy?s eyes open sleepily at her, revealing the deepest Prussian blue she had ever seen, the sunset reflecting off his beautiful eyes. Just like the ocean...

For memory?s sake, she stretched her hand out to the water, smiling wryly. ?I?m Relena. And you are??

?Heero.?

The smooth baritone voice startled her out of her reverie and she glanced behind her, surprise overtaking her serene features. Beneath the wild mane of hair were the very eyes that had been in her thoughts, fathomless and intense as they gazed at her. He stood a distance from her, his hands dug into the pockets of his coat. She dared not speak, fearing that she really was a schizophrenic.

The two drew closer together, their eyes never breaking from each other. His face was so close to hers that she could feel his warm breath on her cheek. But it seemed so surreal.

Too surreal.

And so, being a very practical woman (politics had something to do with it, she supposed), she reached up and tugged a lock of hair. It was stiff yet soft, exactly like it was when she held that tousled head to her chest a year ago.

?You?re real,? she blurted out.

In response, Heero took a strand of her hair, his rough fingers sliding down the silky golden threads. There was a bemused expression on his face. ?And so are you, Relena.?

She tilted her head. ?What are you doing here? Aren?t you supposed to be...? She paused, searching in her memory for that forgotten place he was stationed at. Stress caused forgetfulness. ?...in Moscow??

?Just came back today.?

Relena raised an eyebrow. ?Don?t you live across the country from me??

He cupped her heart-shaped face with his hands, his eyes boring into hers. Relena held her breath, captivated. He leaned closer until their lips lightly touched. She felt his mouth lift slightly into a smirk as he murmured. ?Don?t ask so many questions.?

Their kiss wasn?t deep nor was it consumed with passion. It was sweet and brief, a first kiss the two had ever experienced. Heero observed Relena as she touched her lips with her fingers, those enchanting pools of cerulean wide in disbelief.

Then, those eyes narrowed dangerously and he felt something strange at the pit of his stomach. ?Heero, you must be the slowest man I have ever met.?

Heero glowered at her for the insult, but that infamous death glare was weak against hers. However, being the obstinate youth he was, he wouldn?t give up against the just as equally obstinate young woman. ?I did it this time.?

?After two years, since the incident with Chris and Ralph,? she pointed out.

?Well, it wasn?t my fault that the shuttle had to start up and the moment was lost.?

?But you said something I couldn?t hear. At least tell me now what you tried to say back then.?

?Do you really need to know??

This childish argument was getting on her nerves and she put her hands on her hips. ?Tell me.?

Heero felt rebellious and wanted to play with her a little longer. ?No.?

?Pray tell,? she sweetly said, her eyebrow twitching in annoyance.

?No.?

?Tell.?

?No.?

?Yes you will.?

?No I won?t.?

?Yes.?

?No.?

Their words were shot back and forth faster and faster until their voices mixed together in cacophony. Relena felt her fist itching to punch him in the face, just like she had done back in those sandbox days.

?Yes.?

?No.?

?Ye?.?

?I said I love you.?

Her fist fell to her side. It came so unexpectedly in the middle of the fight that she couldn?t catch the words. ?What??

Frowning in exasperation, he uttered slowly through clenched teeth, ?I said I love you.?

Relena noticed that for the first time, his cheeks were beet red. She realized that her own cheeks were hot too. Eighteen years old and she was still acting like a school girl, she admonished herself. Then again, the two of them never experienced such a thing.

At last, the silence was too much for the young woman to bear and she tried to smile to break the stillness. But something else beat her to it.

Her stomach let out a loud growl, informing her of the urgency to gorge some food down.

A bead of sweat rolled down both of their faces. Heero coughed and grunted to ward off the strange d?j? vu feeling and held out a hand.

?Would you like to have dinner with me??

Relena grinned sheepishly as she accepted his hand. ?Very much so, Heero.?

It's pretty okay, I think, considering that I actually finished it . That's kind of surprising, knowing me. ^_^; I hope you guys don't think too bad of it.....
Uh...I'm new! =) That's really much all I can say. Erk... -_- I am such a moron.

awww....I think it's adorable. Maybe "adorable" is a bad word to use, as it makes you think of sugar-coated fluff, which this isn't...but I can't think of a better word. Very honest & believable (come on, we all know Relena has to drop the "serene politician" attitude at some point), yet perfectly delightful. :D Very nice! I hope to see more from you in the future!

Frowning in exasperation, he uttered slowly through clenched teeth, “I said I love you.”

that was a good fanfic, was it meant to be funny? cos i thought it was especially the little argument that Relena and Heero had before telling her he loved her. And your not the only one that can't finish a fic, i written so many beginnings to fics i can't find an end.

This was so sweat and so sappy and I like the sap once and awhile and you have such away of writing sap. I find that all my writing is the same. Simple and boring but yours is vivid and lively and I admire it. Keep it up.
