Prologue

Letting his eyes drift down to the glove compartment, Heero stared at it a moment longer with a dead thought in mind before looking back up to the backend of the car in front of them. He felt the biting strap of his seatbelt dig into his flesh through the fabric of his Preventers? uniform. A disturbing thought suddenly came to mind, almost rattling his senses and caused him to look down at the glowing lights of the clock on the radio?1:47PM.

They had less then fifteen minutes to get to that damn Embassy.

Shifting his gaze over to the side mirror, he silently observed the woman in the back of the limo between the two heads that almost filled the gap between the passenger and driver. She caught his intense stare and gave him a slight smile that said she was all right. Seeing that she was fine and not in any danger, he then looked back out the front window. He had insisted, before they had left, to her, personally, that the window be kept down, just so he could keep a watchful eye on her for safety reasons.

The driver cleared his throat quietly, gently turning the wheel to the left, as they began to head down a long stretch of abandoned road. Heero looked at him from the corner of his eye, his face deadpan, his eyes holding a faint look of suspicion. Who could blame him?

?Are you sure you know where you?re going?? he asked gruffly, eyes narrowing.

The driver nodded, taking a hand off the wheel to wave away his quiet, unspoken worries. With a slight, thick accent, the bearded driver began to assure him in a calm voice. ?I have been dr??

?Put you hand back on that damned wheel. Now,? Heero growled.

The driver obeyed in silence and then began again. ?I have been driving to this Embassy all my career, sir. I can assure you, nothing terrible will come to happen to us, or your woman friend.?

Fury raged quickly within the deep, blue depths of his eyes. ?She is not my woman friend. She is the Vice Foreign Minister. Respect that fact. I am only here to protect her and keep her from harm,? Heero snarled with a vicious tone dead and mean enough to chill the very marrow in anyone?s bones. ?Especially from replacements like yourse??

A voice abruptly crackled to life in his ear. Heero immediately went quiet. ?Heero, there is no need to appear so hostile towards him. How about you respect the fact that he?s our driver?.?

Heero shot her a deadly look through the side mirror. He could see the laughter twinkling in her eyes. ?Fine. Next time I?ll pull the gun on him,? he grumbled loud enough for only her to hear. He heard her laughter then come alive in his ear. Beautiful.

Again he glowered at her.

?No need for that. Look, we?re already here. Why not ask him what happened to Wufei, Duo and Trowa?? Relena asked, her voice hinting concern for her absent bodyguards and best friends.

?Whatever you say, Your Majesty.? Heero pulled the earpiece from his ear, along with the small microphone attached to one of the buttons on his uniform, and shoved them into his pocket. Turning his eyes to the driver, he watched him in silence for a brief moment before glancing at the quickly approaching building. ?What happened to our regular driver and the bodyguards??

For a moment, Heero thought that a slight hint of apprehension had etched itself onto the driver?s tanned face, but he might?ve been mistaken. The driver shook his head and merely shrugged. ?I am sorry, but Ms. Colonel Une had contacted me and them two back there. She had never mentioned something about needing a few replacements for the day. She never even said why. I am sorry.?

His black, beady eyes stared out straight ahead. Heero absently noted the way his knuckles had suddenly turned white. The sound of creaking leather entered the air, and he saw that the driver was gripping the wheel in a very tight hold. Something was going on?.

Heero felt his brow twitch slightly. Slowly, he reached down to reapply the earpiece to his ear and brought the tiny microphone to his lips. ?Are you strapped in??

?Why??

?Answer the question!? he hissed, his eyes set on the large building that was almost in front of them. The driver was beginning to ease the limo slowly into the cul-de-sac. Heero held Relena?s confused look in the side mirror.

?Yes,? she murmured slowly, brows knit. She gave him a shrug in the mirror, indicating she didn?t understand.

?Undo the seatbelt now,? he said in a calm voice, beginning to undo his own. The microphone then slipped from his fingers, pulling the earpiece with it.

From then, it had all happened in a blur, everything going through a process of slow motion. He heard her cry out for him, a sound he never wanted to hear again. In the side mirror he saw her horrified expression disappear behind the thick black window, as it rolled up quickly. He heard it, at the back of everything that happened, then lock into place.

Heero whirled, screaming out her name, and made a desperate lunge for the window, but was thrown back into his seat. The back of his head hit the door. He shook away the colored spots and looked down at what was holding him back. He swore out loud and scrambled to undo his seatbelt. Throwing it to the side, he then made a wild dive for the driver.

Heero froze, just as soon as the gunshots from the back erupted. Cries of pain and fright followed. With his chest rising and falling heavily, he only stared at the driver with wide eyes. At that moment, he swore vengeance. At that moment, as the driver whispered something incoherent, he knew he had failed his mission.

The driver then closed his eyes, and Heero made one final lunge for him. Suddenly there was an unbearable searing pain that came to life on the right side of his body. He was violently thrown back against his seat, and then found he was flying through the air. His ears throbbed, his mind hurt, and the right side of his body felt deeply burned.

He could feel the wind pushing past him, as he flew up high, only to feel as though he were falling. He could hear nothing, but it didn?t matter. He was feeling groggy and ached everywhere from what had just happened back in the limo. As he cracked open an eye, he saw the asphalt quickly rising upwards to meet him. Through the pain already numbing his body, he didn?t feel much, as he slammed roughly into the ground.

The only thing he felt that added more agony to his head, was the feeling of his head being split open. He didn?t know how long he lay there; it couldn?t have been long, but as he opened his eyes to the gray, dead clouds overtop, he began to feel the cool droplets of rain. It pelted everything in sight.

Slowly moving his eyes to the side, Heero saw the building where the meeting between Earth and the Colonies was supposed to be held. He then, with a painful jolt, remembered who was supposed to be in that building. Ignoring the small shards of glass that had embedded themselves into the right side of his body, he shifted a bit, and began to look around for her through a hazy vision of crimson.

He couldn?t find her anywhere. But he then saw the limo. He saw the flames that now engulfed its body, eating everything that was inside it. It then came back to him, everything of what had happened earlier. Heero screamed out to her, calling for her to answer him. He could feel the painful rumbling of his hoarse voice in his throat, but he couldn?t hear his words, or if she were even calling back to him or not.

For all he knew, she could?ve been dead. There had been gunshots?

Heero began to pull himself up, standing slowly on trembling legs. He tried to ignore the intense pain in his head. Slowly, with unsure steps, he began to walk towards the limo. He could see everything, but he couldn?t hear the flames crackling and popping, as they consumed everything of the limo. What was wrong with him?

He stumbled slightly, the pain in his head sending flashes of agonizing heat everything, especially to his eyes. Heero caught himself from falling over. Reaching up, he put his fingers to his ear. He didn?t feel anything. When he brought his hand back, holding it out in front of him, he stared with squinted eyes at the blood coating his black fingers. It glistened in the glow of the fire, melted away with the rain that touched it.

Heero glanced down at the ground, his eyes searching for her, and saw how his uniform was torn everywhere. Absently, he noted the blood and dirt that clung to his suit and bare flesh. Again he called out to her, but he received nothing in return. Everything was so strangely quiet, like he didn?t have to listen to all these horrible sounds of death and destruction, sounds he had grown up on.

Something unexpectedly touched his shoulder, and Heero nearly fell over, as he whirled around to see whom it was. His hopes died when he saw that it wasn?t her, but Duo himself. The young American had bandages wrapped around his head, and his arm was in a sling. Heero squinted at him, trying to read his lips. He shook his head in response.

Duo stared at him, shocked. ?What do you mean you don?t know where the hell she is??

Heero landed a punch to his arm. Duo gritted his teeth, aggravated by the whole situation. ?What the fu-- damnit, Heero, what was that for!?

?Help me look for her!? Heero barked, his voice beginning to die.

Duo held his good arm up. ?Whoa, all right. Let?s go on the other side of the car.?

The two men rushed to the other side of the limo, then stopped dead at what they saw. She was there, but buried under a ton of metal that had been blown away from the limo during the explosion. Heero hurried up to her as fast as his damaged body could go. Duo quickly trailed behind him. Heero promptly went over the wreck pinning her down.

Relena was slumped forward against her seatbelt. It still kept her in her half of the back seat. With Duo?s help, Heero undid the black, damp strap. Relena fell against him easily. Gathering her into his lap, he pushed some hair away from her face and looked her over for any wounds. Aside from the large pool of blood decorating the front of her jacket that was all he could find.

Heero began to urge her to wake up, but he couldn?t feel the rumble of his voice in his throat. Now he couldn?t speak? First his hearing, and now his voice. Luck sure was on his side this day. What else was he going to find out?

Duo was crouched down beside them, speaking to the still woman. The rain had plastered their hair to their heads and face. It poured down all the harder, not giving up. Duo then tapped Heero, and nodded to the crowd of people beginning to gather around them.

Relena opened her eyes slowly, wincing in the process. Heero?s face remained expressionless, while his eyes spoke the relief he felt.

As her eyes opened, they began to dart around wildly. She then began to call out, her voice full of panic, ?Heero? Heero! Heero, where are you? Heero!?

Relena could feel someone holding her, but she couldn?t see whom it was. All she saw was shadows that soon faded to sheer darkness, an unwelcoming sight that only nightmares could create.
