Author?s Notes: Well this is my first story ever and I?m going to try really hard to get through this story as I can. This story and the characters are my ideas and this is not a fanfic.

?Vertical Horizon.?

I wondered where that name came from. I remember in the present time that it was a name of an alternative band. But before that, the name was different. The name meant of one word that no one else could understand. The name means history. History will change honor and courage. History will change past and future. History will change our lives forever.

On February 21, 1992, Vertical Horizon had begun in that dreadful battlefield of Kingston Park in a small city of Cottage Grove, Minnesota. Two teams of armed forces fought this blizzard battlefield in the darkest night. One team was the Titans of Mobile Infantry, and the other is their enemy, the Royals of the Empire. The Titans? goal is to defeat the Royal army and maintained peace to win the longest war ever in history and as of last year, the 1991 Winter War.

My name is Captain Kevin Armada. I?m 19 years old and the main leader of the Titan Squad 2nd Platoon. My mission is to lead the 2nd Platoon into the Royal territory to take over the fort that was been stolen three months ago by the Royals. If we capture it, we win this war.

My men are stationed behind a 3 inch green platform that was use for cover up. We are somewhere in the middle of Kingston Park surrounded by flares, grenade explosions, and rocket launchers. I peeked my head out of the platform and pulled out my binoculars out to take a close look at the site where some of the Royals were firing from the left flank area by the deep hollow hill.

?Captain Armada, what?s the situation?? Corporal Mace Jensen asked me while I was still looking through my binoculars. He was 18 years old and he was promoted to Corpural about three months ago about the same time I got promoted.

?We?re not that far, Mace. We got to find a way to break down through to the left flank area without too much machine gun fire.? I said as I ducked down and turned to Mace. ?Send Major Hartford over.?

?Yes, sir.? He said as we yells over to the farther right from the platform and a few seconds later, Major Adam Hartford ran over towards us. I couldn?t say much to Adam. As you can tell, he was the oldest person that I ever met. He was 28 years old and married for four years. He?s almost like a father to me.

?You called, Captain?? He asked.

?Yes, Major. You better take a look at this.? I said as I handed over my binoculars to him and he peered out of the blocked platform. I pointed the area where to look and Adam looked into the binoculars and with a sigh and a nod, he ducked down.

?Well, Kevin. You?re the captain, what?s your plan.? He said.

?Well, the plan is I want to send your first line in front of the platform. Have them charged at them, and send out four rocket launchers through the first bench over there, and the other onto the center area. That way we got more room to charge in and make it into the deep hill on the left flank area. Can you do that for the cover-up?? I said.

?How many men do you have left??

?Probably enough to take on the situation.?

?Okay, I got your point now. What I?m going to do is I?m going to the third row bench on the center, and then I?ll make a sniper shot at the main Royal who is leading the left flank over there. Once I shot him, I?ll give you the signal. You got it??

?Sounds fair enough. Okay get in position, don?t get killed out there, Adam.?

?I?ll try not to.? He said and then he signaled his first lined men out front of the green platform. Just then, he climbed up to the third row of the bench, sniper riffle in hand as he prepared the target.

I informed my men on the plan to reach to the deep hill for the second cover, and so my soldiers responded when they reloaded their ammo and being prepared to attack. After two minutes of waiting, Adam fired the shot and it hit the leader in the head and fell over. Then, he waved the signal to me.

?ALL RIGHT, TITANS!! ATTACK!!!!!? I yelled as the 2nd Platoon led by me jumped out of the green platform and made a rush and attack run through the heavy snowstorm and explosion.

Just then, the Royals fired their rockets at us. One fired through the far left and shocked maybe six or seven men almost close to me, but I still kept running. We manage to fire some shots from the left flank and our rocket specialists fired rocket launchers back and it nearly made the shockwave of shells at them at no mercy.

About five minutes later, we managed to slide down the hill with a few attempts to slide or roll over. I ducked down from the bottom of the hill along with Mace and Adam right beside me. I can still see it; the fort is only a half a mile away.

?Well, we?re that close now, Captain. I think we?re ready for the main action right now!!? Mace said as he excitedly emptied out his ammo and reloaded it in his rifle.

?Hold it, Corporal. I?m going in. You guys stay here.? Adam said.

Mace?s face grew into shock. ?Say what!??

?Wait a second, Adam. It probably be too dangerous to go in. Let me get through, I can manage a few soldiers with a couple of bullets.? I said shockingly.

?I said stay here! I don?t want you two youngsters to get yourselves killed. I?m Major to this squad and I?m ordering you and your men to stay put until I clear out the main area.? He said angrily.

I close my eyes in discuss. I can?t make a firm decision. I wanted to go in and take over the fort but the other side of my mind told me to stay here. Someone in my past told me to. I opened my eyes and looked up to Adam and said, ?Okay, Adam. You win. I?ll let you through.?

?Thanks, Kevin. I won?t ever forget this. I know this is hard for you to stay here, but you got someone who is worried about you. That?s why I?m going in instead of you. So from now on, I?m heading in with my first squad. If anything bad happens, full back to the platform. You hear me??

?Yes, Major Hartford. Please be careful out there.?

Adam smiled, ?I will. I?ll come back in one peace.? He then turned to his first squad and said, ?FIRST SQUAD, GET IN POSITIONS!! PREPARE TO ATTACK!!? His squad was all in position and ready. ?CHARGE!!!?

Adam?s squad charges up the hill and open fire to the top of the hill. I watched as Adam had made it up to the hill and all I can hear was still explosions and the cries of the solders through the hill. Then, everything was silent.

Me and my squad remained silent for the past five minutes until we heard gunfire and out of the blue one of Adam?s soldiers flew out from the explosion and landed in the thick hard branches. I closed my eyes, just can?t take the pressure of men dying. A few seconds later more of Adam?s men fell and died.

Mace knew this was happening and he turned over to the whole squad and said, ?DAMMIT, THIS IS HOPELESS!! EVERYONE FULL BACK!!! WE GOT TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!!?

The whole squad fled back up to the low hill and as for me, I sat there stunned. I just can?t leave Adam behind, I known him for a long time since I joined the Titans, and I can?t just leave him.

?Kevin!! What?s the matter!? We got to full back, there?s no choice!!? Mace said as he shook me from my thoughts.

?Mace, you go ahead. I?m going in.? I said.

?Are you frickin crazy!? It?s too fricken dangerous, and you could get yourself killed out there! Just forget about Adam and let?s full back now!!?

?Forget about me, Mace!! I?m going in to save Adam and try to take over the fort!! I?m not giving up this war yet until I get my avenge, and Adam is the only person that I?ve ever known and I?m not going to leave him out there like that. What if he got hurt out there!??

?No, Kevin! It?s an order from Adam, and we?re fulling back right now!! LET?S GO!!?

I have no choice. I pushed Mace off down the hill and grabbed my rifle and charged my way up to the top of the hill where Adam ran.

?NO, KEVIN COME BACK HERE!!! YOU CAN?T MAKE IT OUT OF THERE ALIVE!!!? I heard Mace yelling at me to turn back, but I can?t make a decision like that. Adam has been my closest friend and I also lost my best friend last year and I can?t turn down like this.

As I made my way up to the hill, some thoughts were drifting in my mind. It?s my memories, my memories of my past. My childhood, my brother, myself as a Titan soldier, and most of all, a special memory that will change my life forever??Cassie?..she?s the only one that I can trust with. She helped me though my nightmares?.my darkest world??my ice cold heart??.and the meaning what love is. I will never forget this memory. I?m sorry, Cassie, there?s no other choice for me to stay alive like this. But Adam is more important to me than any other. My thoughts were drifted away as I disappear into the deep fogginess of the night.

This is where my story begins.
