Elaborate Lives - songfic

Post by Gundam Girl »

Gundam Girl: So I needed to take a break from my series fics for awhile, and I thought a nice 1xR songfic would boost my motivation. If you find you enjoy this one, please read ?I Should Tell You,? another one-shot songfic to the song ?I Should Tell You,? by Jonathan Larson, featured in the musical RENT.

Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing. Nor do I own the song ?Elaborate Lives,? featured in the musical ?Aida? (which I am going to see this month!) It belongs to Elton John and Tim Rice

Note: Lyrics in these. <la la la>

Warnings: Not lemon. Not lime. There is just some physical stuff?can we call it orange?

*~Elaborate Lives~*

The summers of the Sank Kingdom were always enjoyable. The tile of her balcony wasn?t nearly as chilled as she expected it to be at midnight. In fact the only part of her that felt at all cool was her heart.

As her silk robe billowed around her small waist in the warm breeze, her hair flying behind her, Relena sighed softly. Downstairs, she could hear some fancy ballad playing. Zechs and Noin were celebrating their third wedding anniversary, and she was tired of the playacting. She?d pretended to be happy? Was she? God, no.

<We all live such elaborate lives>

When a lone figure, darkened by the shadows in the corner of the parapet, leapt over the rail and landed on bent-knee, she was not bit surprised.

?Heero,? she breathed. ?Are you all right??

Heero stood and came to her, intent written on his face.

<Wild ambitions in our sights>

?I?m fine, Relena. The mission went smoothly, and the terrorists are disarmed.? Not wishing to discuss it further, he dipped his head down and captured her lips with his own, secretly pleased when she responded immediately. He had missed her. Good God, this should have been their day. To hell with Zechs, he thought not for the first time. He only wanted her.

<How an affair of the heart survives>

It was because of her damned brother that he crept onto the palace yards every night to see her. Though he was still confused at how Zechs could possible forbid his sister from being with him, not once had he tried to convince Relena to fight back. She had been without family for too long, and since she was the kind of person who needed it, he would never to anything that might inspire her to push Milliardo away.

But nights just weren?t enough. A couple precious hours had never been enough.

<Days apart and hurried nights>

Relena drew away from him and grasped his hand. ?Heero, perhaps he will allow you to come by tomorrow ? with well-wishes to Noin. Her baby should be coming in less than a week. . .?

?I?ve nothing well to wish to Noin,? he cut her off, eyebrows lowering. ?What has she done to help us??

?It isn?t her fault.? Needing to be closer, she pressed against his chest and closed her eyes. ?There?s nothing she could possibly do about it. She thinks I don?t know, but she has protested, Heero. But Zechs is her husband, her greatest love in this world.? Opening her eyes, they met his. ?She?s like us; she would never do anything to upset the one she cares for the most.?

<Seems quite unbelievable to me, I don?t want to live like that>

Heero caught her chin between his thumb and index finger. ?I would never hurt you. I would die first.?

?I know you wouldn?t. I wouldn?t either. But Heero, I will keep my dignity until Milliardo realizes that, like Noin, I need to be with who I love the most. You.? Unexpectedly, her eyes filled with tears. She hadn?t cried over the situation in a couple of weeks, and now that they spoke of it, her defensive walls crumbled faster than Jericho?s.

<Seems quite unbelievable to me, I don?t want to love like that>

Hearing the voices of the patrol guards below her bedroom, she took his hand. And since one of them sounded like Wufei, she wouldn?t take any chances. She led him into her bedroom.

<I just want our time to be slower and gentler, wiser, free>

Feeling more at ease, Heero shrugged her his Preventer jacket and hung it on the coatrack by the door. ?If it cheers you, I was promoted to captain today.?

Relena smiled. ?That?s excellent.? But what if that promotion was whipped away by his coming here? If they were found out, she couldn?t help but fear for her own position. She was rich, there was no way they couldn?t live happily if they were together, and the era of peace had lasted for a bloody four years, the credit going to them. They were two of the most important people on the planet. And two of the most condemned, it appeared. It a world of peace, they dealt with a personal war.

<We all live in extravagant times>

With Zechs? decision more than firm, it seemed the only way for them to actually live was for her to disown them, and it tore her heart to think of it. She loved her brother, and Noin, and the little niece or nephew she would soon have. But she loved Heero a great deal and well. And she was losing this battle.

<Playing games we can?t all win>

Zechs didn?t even realize the emotional ache he was causing his sister, believing that he was in the right by protecting for her and her image. An ex-war machine was not at all suitable for Relena, was his opinion. And it didn?t do poorly for his image as Preventer Colonel Wind, either.

<Unintended emotional crimes take some out, take others in>

Heero went lax in the armchair he?d chosen to sit in as Relena lowered herself right onto his lap and pressed her lips to his temple, trailing a line of affectionate kisses down to just below his ear. He didn?t resist the urge to thread his fingers through her silken blond hair. And remember again just how much he wanted her ? always.

<I?m so tired of all we?re going through, I don?t want to live like that>

Relena buried her face in the crook between Heero?s neck and shoulder, seeking comfort. ?Heero...?

<I?m so tired of all we?re going through, I don?t want to love like that/I just wanna be with you! Now and forever, peaceful, true?>

Heero pulled her back by her shoulders until she was looking in her eyes. ?Listen to me, very hard, Relena.?

She blinked. ?What is it? What?s the matter??

?Zechs is the only person keeping us apart, and he?s a coward who won?t face me. The truth is, he?s the one who gave me the promotion. He knows he?s hurt me, and he knows I?m not who I was. He truly believes he?s doing right by you, but he wanted to make it up to me.?

?Has he?? Her eyes were bright and alert.

His response was to crush his body to hers and shut his eyes tightly. ?God, Relena, nothing compares to you. . . Nothing ever will.? He tenderly passed a few fingers over her cheek. ?Not when I love you.?

<This may not be the moment to tell you face to face. . .>

The look that crossed her face was confusion, wonder, then hurt. He?d been aware of what he?d done, had waited to tell her what she?d always wanted to hear until it was too late. But he?d rather he say the words now than not say them at all.

<But I could wait forever for the perfect time and place>

As Relena, even though her feelings were a bit frayed at the apparently inappropriate choice of time, she drew her head up to kiss him long and deep. One hand grasped his shoulder, clenched there, as the other lifted to run through his hair.

As he enjoyed the caresses, he couldn?t help but dwell on their misfortune, which was Zechs?s protective sense. These sad meetings would never do their love justice, and one day, hopefully soon, he would untangle the knots separating them, and they would be together.

But Zechs was smart. Was he really, truly meant for her? Yes, he did love her, and she him, but who was right? Zechs or he?

<We all lead such elaborate lives
We don?t know whose words are true>

?Believe in our love, Heero,? Relena murmured, as though she had felt his doubt. ?It is too strong to die without a fight. Just like us.?

<Strangers, lovers, husbands, wives
Hard to know who?s loving who>

As Relena?s surprise faded when Heero stood and lifted her into his arms, she locked her arms around his neck and met his eyes with both despair and adoration.

<Too many choices tear us apart, I don?t want to live like that>

He stepped out onto the balcony again and for a moment, they stayed like that, she embraced in the warmth of his arms, he seeing everything he?d ever want in her eyes. . . and was denied.

<Too many choices tear us apart, I don?t want to love like that>

When Heero kissed her, she felt the thrum in his blood and the love in his heart. Her eyes slid shut and tears spilled from them for what she vowed would be the last time until everything was woven together again.

<I just want to touch your heart>

As he lowered her to her feet, Relena felt the tile was cold now, cold like their present. As Heero touched his lips to her forehead, he released her waist and went back to the corner of the balcony to climb down the wall.

Wufei?s eyes narrowed as he saw his war friend and Preventer comrade fall silently to the ground. Above, Relena stood watching him as well, and Heero was the only thing she saw. Slowly, he relaxed and smiled.

?I wish you well, my friends.? He turned to the guards coming in that direction. ?Everything is fine over here. Go look at the east side of the palace.?

<May this confession be the start>

************************************

Well, that was sad, wasn?t it? I?m depressed now, but the song fit so nicely, and I had to write this. I may get around to a sequel after I catch up with some other stuff I need to do. Chapter four of ?Behind Darkness? Mask? will be up soon. . . I?d appreciate feedback, so please review. Bye!

I don't know what's up with my comp or connection, but I have no idea why this was sent 2x. I've never had problems with this b4, and it's irking me just a bit. Sorry for this little ....extra message, but I can't stand seeing the same message over and over....In actuallity, the message said it was never sent, so I gave up, and rebooted....It still said it hadn't been sent....And I look all up in here....and it's been sent 2x....Whatever. Alrighty! I still love your fic!!!!!
