Only Fools Believe in Fairytales 1/1

Post by Stuntcat »

Alright, I just realized I haven't posted much fanfiction at all. Alright, this has 1xR themes, is a death/angst/introspective fic with a 500 word limit, from first person. Written one night on a whim...Please don't hurt me ^.^;

Only Fools Believe in Fairytales

There was always a happy ending waiting.

The prince would marry the princess, the loyal knights their respective ladies, and peace would be restored. There was the unspoken agreement that we: the scrappy bunch of misfits would triumph over ?evil? and the day would be saved once again.

It wasn?t supposed to turn out this way.

We smiled our way through the scenes, holding deep with in us the knowledge their would be a new, better dawn.

All of us had our lives laid out. And we knew that in our perfect fairytale lives, although we might face dangerous peril and horrendous emotional obstacles, it would all end up okay.

Heero would love Relena, and the prince and princess of our little story would marry. The kingdom would rejoice, and all would be well. We might have our personal angsts, our bad memories, but as in most stories, we would also have our happiness.

As the loyal, the pure, the honorable and the joyous, we would get our loves and go on with life, becoming old and venerable guardians of the lands.

It wasn?t supposed to turn out this way.

Standing in this stark hospital room, surrounded by the white, drawn faces of my friends Noin?s quiet sobbing is the only sound. The reality has come crashing upon us. We are just normal people, living in a cruel world. We wanted to believe in the picket fence, the smiling faces, the quiet life. We wanted to believe in it all so much, but reality quickly ripped our fragile fantasies away.

There is no fairytale ending.

We?ve lived out our lives surrounded by our own lies, denials that death would come before the happy ending.

It wasn?t supposed to happen to us.

The shooter shouldn?t have gotten past the guards, Heero wasn?t supposed to miss the shooter, Relena wasn?t supposed to duck a second to late?

It wasn?t supposed to happen! To others maybe, but never to us.

Even if she did get hit, the hospital was supposed to save her. Then we could look back and laugh at it as another escapade of Heero and Relena?s tumultuous life. She wasn?t supposed to die.

I stare silently over at Heero. His face is set stonily, and I can tell he?s already begun to blame himself. I can sense him raging against this harsh reality. Raging against the love, so newly discovered, being torn away as quickly as it came.

Later, I watch the pale shell which is all that remains of a great woman be carted away I cry.

I can?t remember the last time I cried at all.
Wasn?t, shouldn?t, couldn?t rings in my head, a silent denial of the truth. I feel like screaming, cussing, doing anything so I could wake up from this nightmare I can?t seem escape from.

Questions sweep through my mind, racing quickly in a dizzying parade:

Why did it happen?

We worked so hard for it? Why didn?t it work?

Dammit! Where?s our happy ending?

Blargen. So repetitious...I'll have to work on that... As usual, I know there is probably amazing amounts of typos. I be sorry >.<.

Wow...you built up a lot of angst in those 500 or so words...I'm very impressed...not happy, for obvious reasons, but impressed... :(

One question: who's the speaker? Part of me thinks Duo, although at first (for whatever reason) I thought Wufei -- something about the situation being so wrong seemed to scream "INJUSTICE!" But the whole prince/princess idea -- probably Duo. In a way, I like the ambiguity of the speaker, as it makes you think about what they'd ALL be thinking.

Very nice job! -- TQ

And a fighter by his trade,
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him low
Or cut him 'till he cried out
In his anger and his shame;
I am leaving, I am leaving,
But the fighter still remains."

Wow!
That was so sad and depressing, but wonderful! So amazing. I couldn't tell who it was either, I thought Zechs or Duo or even Trowa..I really liked that I felt it could be anyone. You really can pack in the angst! I hope you post more fics soon. :D

People commented...wow...

'nyway, when I wrote it I was thinking in Duo-perspective-ness, but it could be almost any of them. It was meant to be vague.

^.~ I'm glad some ppl liked it.
