Once Upon a Dream [AU; one-shot]
Hi...I'm Wild Cyan...Or just Cyan for short. Or Cy. Whatever. ^^; Not picky at all. I've written fanfiction before, but just never summoned up the courage to publish them online. My friend (an avid Inuyasha fanfic writer) said I was alright, and pushed me toward this site...so here I am. ^^ This is an AU one-shot. I don't own Gundam Wing, etc.
Once Upon a Dream, by Wild Cyan
Dusk was apparent as the darkness of night crept in from the heavens, forcing the sun down and out of sight behind the horizon. The sun seemed to be fighting, though, as it released rays of orange sunlight that mingled with the deep blue.
Heero Yuy noticed none of this, however. With his laptop beneath his arm and his baseball cap pulled low over his head, he looked like the typical young, overworked employee at some business firm on his way home from work. His steps were heavy on the sidewalk until he reached the door of his building, and were heavier still until he was inside his small, modest apartment with a nice view. He threw his laptop and hat on the sofa and began stripping himself of his clothes before he even reached his bedroom. Down to his boxers, he let himself fall into his bed, not even bothering to make himself dinner or brush his teeth, or whatever.
To Heero Yuy, sleep was a blessing, in more ways than one. Here was his refuge from work, from his demanding boss who depended way too much on his computer genius, from the craziness of his friends sometimes. Duo seemed to be bent on having him intoxicated every other day of his life. Heero loved to go to clubs, but he wasn't about to get a second job as a bartender, like Duo had done. He couldn't tell the difference between a martini from a bloody mary to save his life. Also...people dreamed while they slept. And lately, Heero had been having the same identical dream every night. It was so nice a dream that he looked forward to going to sleep every night.
It always started the same way. He'd be in some sort of wooded area, by a stream. There'd be a bridge over that stream, and on that bridge stood a girl. A blonde, pretty girl waiting for him with a great, big smile, leaning on the stone bridge. The first night he just saw her, and caught her eye. Even from afar he knew her eyes were blue and shimmery. The sunlight would just bounce off the color of her eyes, the same way light would reflect off the stream beneath her. The next night, he had the same dream, except this time, he'd begun to walk to her. The following night, she had leaned away from the edge of the bridge, and stood in the middle of it with her hands clasped in front of her. Her smile was wider, and she was about to say something when he woke up. He always woke up calmly, and feel like he'd have the best sleep of his life, even though it couldn't have been more than five hours. The smell of the grass and the trees and the murmur of the water lingered, and the girl never faded from his thoughts.
Now Heero snuggled deep within his covers, willing for sleep to come and take him. In no time at all, he felt himself float in the calm of nothingness, his mind blank. He could hear his heart beat, but nothing else. Then his sneakered feet touched grass, and the scent of pine drifted into his nostrils. He turned instantly to the bridge, and there she was, smiling, like he knew she would be. He began to walk towards her like it was second nature. He stopped at the foot of the bridge and stared at her, noting how her blue dress fluttered in the light breeze and how her hands were held together in front of her. Then her hand rose, beckoning for him to hold it. Heero reached out, his hand dark compared to hers. He found himself hoping, praying, wishing that his dream wouldn't end now. Not now. Not when they were so close. He grasped her soft, white hand and brought her closer to him, noticing how her hair smelled like mangoes and oranges.
"Heero," he heard her murmur. Her voice was soft and high, like a small glass bell. He'd never heard his name said that way before; so full of affection. A name flitted through his mind, and he answered, "Relena."
He knew her name. Just like that.
Out of nowhere, but not suddenly, a song drifted through the trees. A waltz he recognized, but by what name he couldn't remember. Unearthly voices accompanied the waltz. It was a chorus of holy, beautiful words he couldn't decipher, or even begin to understand. His other hand automatically caught hers, and his feet moved without him willing them to. Then, he could think of nothing else but the girl in his arms, who was just smiling and laughing and saying his name.
She had such a genuinely happy, pretty laugh. It was the last thing he heard before he woke up.
The ceiling swam into view before his eyes, and he realized it was morning. A second later his phone rang. Muttering a curse under his breath, he rolled over and picked up the cordless phone, answering,
"Hello?"
"Heero, buddy!" It was Duo. Great.
"What do you want?" he growled, letting himself fall back onto his pillows.
He heard Duo chuckle on the other side of the line. Heero felt a pang of guilt. Duo was always so patient with him, even when he was at his worst. "Well, buddy, I'm guessing you don't have a date for the charity dinner tomorrow night."
"Hmn."
Duo snorted back a laugh. "I'll take that as a no. And that's why me and Hilde-girl decided to bring you a date!"
Heero couldn't count on his fingers and toes how many times Duo set him up on a disastrous date. Heero banged his head against the headboard and was about to protest, when Duo said quickly, "Before you say no, I just want you to know that this girl is different than all the rest. I didn't pick her off a corner somewhere, okay?"
Heero gaped into the phone. "You mean you got all those other gi-"
Duo cleared his throat. "That's getting off the subject! Anyway, she's really pretty, and comes from a really good family. Like, rich-good, and popular-good, and nice-good, and charitable-good..."
"I get it!"
"Yea. Well. She's different, okay? She and Hilde are really good friends, and her father is one of the top contributors to the company. I met her a bunch of times, and I'm telling you, she's great. I mean, if I didn't have Hilde..."
"Duo!" Hilde's voce erupted from the background.
"Kidding!" Duo called back. "Anyway, buddy, are you in?"
Heero sighed. The girl of his dreams (quite literally) was just that, a dream. Might as well.
"Fine," he said submissively.
Duo whooped in triumph quite loudly. "Bye!" he called, and hung up. Heero sat staring at the phone for a moment, then got up to make breakfast. At least he didn't have to go to work today.
Heero pulled at the collar of his tux with a grimace. He hated getting all dressed up. He was a jeans-and-a-sweater sort of guy, you know? After saying hello to the people he was supposed to say hello to, he gave himself the chance to look around. The ballroom was extravagantly decorated. The chandelier sparkled and the band was playing a lively little ditty. The people were fancier. Women wore enormous, low-cut ensembles and diamonds on their necks and ears. The men were a little less dolled up, but Heero saw his VP wearing diamond cuff-links. He suddenly felt the lack of ornaments.
"HEEEERO!"
Without looking, Heero knew it was Duo. Turning, he found his friend looking out of place in his suit, amused at the fact that he and Duo were more comfortable surfing at a beach somewhere than hanging around here, pretending they fit in.
Duo was dragging his girlfriend Hilde behind him, who was wearing a playful little yellow dress. Hilde, in turn, was pulling along a girl with sun-bleached hair.
"Here, Heero. Meet Hilde's friend," Duo said breathlessly. Hilde pushed her companion in front of Heero.
Obviously short-winded, the girl pushed a strand of golden hair behind her ears and said, "I'm sorry, I guess they dragged you here, too. Just to let you know, I don't do this very oft-"
She looked up at him, and Heero felt his heart catch in his throat.
Oh. My. God.
"Uh, yea," Hilde said, a little nervous about the abrupt silence. "Heero, this is-"
"Relena..."
"Uhm...yea. How did you..?" Duo and Hilde glanced at each other.
It was her. The eyes, the hair, the smile, the bell-like voice. The orange-mango smell. She was even in blue.
Suddenly he felt like a psychopath. How could he tell her he dreams about her every night? Before he could speak, a spark of recognition appeared in her eyes. It surprised him.
She said, suddenly, "I know you!"
"You do?" Heero, Duo, and Hilde asked simultaneously, astonished.
"Yes," she said, unaware of anything but Heero. Her eyes were locked on his, and he felt suddenly light-headed. Impulsively, he took her hand, and kept it within his grasp. He pulled her a little nearer...or was it she who closed the distance between them? Heero found he didn't care, and his hand rose to brush a lock of wheat-colored hair out of her eyes, which were wide and bright.
"I know you...I danced with you once," she murmured with what sounded like awe in her voice. He graced her with a smile, and her face brightened with a grin. "I danced with you...once, in a dream."
********************
*cough* Yea. How was it? Inspiration for this is from the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty...that little waltz they put words to, and called it Once Upon a Dream. It was sooo adorable...thought I'd use it for a fanfic. ^^
Argh, I just can't be happy with my ending. Maybe someday, if I think up of something better, I'll change it. Hmm...I dunno. We'll see. ^^
Luv,
Cy

I thought this was very cute. I liked your style... very appropriate, I think, since I was able to feel Heero's monotony at times as well as the surrealism of the dream. Very nice.
I hope you write more.

Awww! *melts* This was WAY to cute and fantastically beautiful. Your style is such a nice read, and the obvious love between Heero and Relena is perfectly written!
I can't pick a favorite part, but I especially liked how much Heero can't wait to go to sleep to see her; that was a really nice touch! And it was an AU! *applauds*
Welcome to BI, and thanks for posting, Cyan! I can't wait to read more from you!
