Defeating Denial
An AxI Hellsing fic

Disclaimer: I do not own Hellsing, or any of its characters...although I really wish I had a pet vampire of my own.
Fic Rating: Probably PG-13, but if I was being on the safe side, R. Mainly for language and sexual references/situations. Nothing lemony, though.
Notes: Events within <>*<>*<> have taken place in the past.
Thanks: Dreamer, this is for you. You really are the most kick-@SS beta in the world! If I had it in my power, I would totally send a shirtless Alucard to show up at your door. (So long as you'd send him on over my way when you're done) ;)

~*Part 3*~

FEBRUARY 3

?Sir Integral, your cheek. May I inquire what happened?? Walter asked in his concerned, fatherly tone when bringing his master her evening tea. He had kept quiet for the entire day, and no longer could contain his worry when Integral had not uttered a word about the cut that graced her normally perfect skin.

?A mere scratch,? she replied coldly. ?And no, you may not.?

The steward nodded as he left the room, running into Alucard, lingering outside of Integral?s office door.

?She?s in a foul mood tonight,? Walter warned as he passed. The Angel of Death then paused, and in understanding, shook his head. ?But I suppose you knew that already, being the cause of it.? And with that, Walter was swept away in the darkness of the corridor.

Alucard narrowed his eyes, his lips formed in an uncharacteristic, grim line. He had been waiting so patiently, all of these years, for Integral to grow up, so he could seduce her slowly?properly--and make her want him. At the very least, he was building up a connection with her that surpassed any relationship of the mortal realm. Yet the evening before, it was extremely likely he had destroyed everything he had worked up to, in those few moments he had lost himself in her blood. Of all the lessons he had learned over centuries of time, it was that one action formed out of impatience could ruin a lifetime spent carefully in construction.

It was true the vampire finally had the proof that he affected his Lord Hellsing, that she would have been willing to let him have her?but never did he want to make her cry. Tears did not look well on his Master, and until he tasted them mixed with the sweetness of her blood, he wasn?t certain he would have stopped there. He really would have been a monster, then.

?Alucard,? he heard her call him. For the first time, he did not want to see her, but her wish was always his command.

Integral did not make eye contact with her pet, and instead kept her focus on her papers. ?FREAK vampires have been identified at an abandoned warehouse, where they have been hording ghouls in attempts to create an army of the undead. Your mission: search and destroy.?

She shuffled through papers on her desk in an attempt to look busy, yet Integral could tell her vampire was still standing before her.

?You have your orders. Now go,? Integral told him sternly.

?I must?say something before I can do that.? Alucard?s voice was low and serious.

?I have already sent Agent Victoria, she is waiting,? Lord Hellsing interrupted, knowing her vampire was trying to speak of the night before.

?You are my Master,? he said. ?I am bound to you as you are to me?there is nothing wrong with that, being?bound,? he explained in a tone he used often when she was a child.

?Everything is wrong with what could have happened if we bonded, Alucard,? Integral?s calm fa?ade instantly dropped as she stood up and pressed her hands to the desk in frustration.

?Though I do not agree, I understand your doubts,? the vampire said in a gentle tone he used but rarely.

She finally looked at him, the lively vampire now solemn and serious. The very sense of his stillness eased the blizzard raging within the woman back down to her usual frost. She noticed he had purposely come looking his most vulnerable, with no hat, shades, or coat. His eyes, which usually burned with an unnatural fire, were dull and downcast. Integral couldn?t believe how?human he looked, how fragile. Even when she was so angry with both him and herself for their disorderly conduct the previous night, she still felt the need to ask him, ?Alucard, are you well this evening??

After a time, he replied simply. ?I am not.?

?This is unexpected,? Integral said, her tone still all business. ?Would you like me to relieve you of your assignment this evening? I do not want to put my units in danger if you cannot perform your duties. I?m sure Victoria will be sufficient for this mission.?

?Master, my purpose is to serve you,? Alucard whispered through the darkened room. ?I will fulfill my mission. But not before you know?Integra, never would I harm you.?

?I know that,? she snapped, slightly miffed that he used her nickname.

?You so easily pretend,? he rebutted softly.

?And you try my patience. Just forget what happened, Alucard,? Integral said, growing weary of the conversation, and the confusion that came along with it.

?That is an order I cannot promise I?ll obey,? Alucard replied, disappearing in the darkness.

~*~*~

Integral tossed in her bed. No matter how she tried to sweep the image of her dark demon out of her mind, Alucard?s face always invaded that empty place when she closed her eyes. The restless woman did not know how long she had been drifting in and out of sleep, when she suddenly sensed that someone was watching her.

Damn?her mind cursed. Who else would it be?

Integral tiredly propped herself up on her shoulders, and tried to gaze around the room without her glasses. If one examined her nearsighted vision, she could easily be considered blind. But her farsightedness was another story, thus even in the shadow-cast room, Lord Hellsing could recognize the familiar silhouette of her vampire.

?What?s going on?? she heard herself say, although her voice seemed disconnected from her mind and body. Was she still asleep? Was this a dream?

Alucard stepped forward, his pale skin glowing the same color as moonlight. She could discern more of his features than usual, even as his form was falsely haloed by the luminous stardust shining in through the window. The night was bright outside, Integral could tell. Silver clouds must be spider webbed across the sky, the moon eerily lightening up the heavens with their reflections. It was her favorite kind of night.

A shadow covered the rays of light, which had been illuminating streaks of her skin in their path. Integral had been so distracted with the beauty of the sky slice in her window, she hadn?t quite been aware that her advancing vampire was finally positioned at the foot of her bed.

?I?don?t remember letting you in here,? the woman said. Her voice was extremely lazy, given the alarming situation, and she couldn?t help but wonder if she was drunk.

Alucard grasped the bed board and pushed up over it slowly, crawling predatorily over his master?s enormous mattress before he settled himself with his hands and knees crouched over her resting body.

?What?what are you doing?? Integral asked airily, as his fingers danced over her form. Each caress was extremely gentle. He brushed his hands over the silky fabric of her nightgown and wound his fingertips through her flowing hair.

?Have I been drinking?? she asked him. She sounded quite tipsy to herself, and didn?t really understand what was possessing her to reach up to caress the beautiful body of her shirtless vampire suitor.

?Let me check,? he answered in a husky voice and bent to touch his lips to her own.

The funny thing was?she couldn?t really feel it. There was an overall essence of pleasurable peace, of a sensual calm that she hadn?t expected Alucard to induce. But something was missing?

?Wendy,? he whispered teasingly in her ear, alluding to the codenames they had once been given, while his fingertips toyed with the strap of her gown. ?Come away with me to Never Land?? The enticement lingered in heavy air, as a throaty stream of chuckles drifted though the night.

<>*<>*<>

Cuddled on her bed at thirteen, Integral muffled her tears. She felt so weak when she was crying, but the memory of her late father still was fresh in her mind, causing the pain of his death to linger on and on?

She felt so alone now and, added to everything, the world had seemed to topple down on her shoulders. The Hellsing organization was under her control, along with a crazed vampire as a family heirloom. Nothing could have prepared the young girl for such a thing, but as the lone member of a once proud family, she still blamed herself for feeling afraid.

How was she going to hold together the last of her family?s pieces when they seemed cursed to disappear? First her mother, then her father?the people who had once loved her were now gone. Integral soon began to wonder if anyone still loved her at all, releasing a sob before she could muffle it in her pillow.

The girl let out a gasp as her door creaked open, the kind face of Walter appearing through her tear-filled eyes.

?Please forgive my intrusion, but I heard sounds and wanted to make sure everything was alright,? the aged steward said gently, as he cautiously stepped up to sit on the side of Integral?s bed.

The girl scolded herself for getting caught between sobs and hid her face behind the soft pillow she clung to, fully ashamed at her display. A Lord of Hellsing should never cry.

Finally finding her voice, the girl merely spoke an almost inaudible, ?It is nothing,? through her pillow in response to Walter?s statement, praying no more tears would escape her.

?If it would be of some benefit, I am a very good listener. Is there something that might be troubling you, my angel??

Walter?s words were so kind, and his use of the fond nickname easily coaxed the girl to peer up from her pillow and regard him with her wide, blue eyes. The beautiful, pale orbs were so unbelievably innocent back then, open and expressive. Before Integral had developed her practiced shield, her eyes always gave her away.

?I was thinking of father,? she began to explain, her words trembling slightly. ?And then I realized?is there anyone left who loves me at all??

?My dear angel, of course there is,? Walter smiled sadly, while covering her hand with his own. ?I love you, just like I would a daughter.? His words reassured her and Integral?s worried eyes seemed to lighten, her tears finally having subsided.

?If I were your daughter, would I grow up to become an Angel of Death, too?? the girl asked, her expression innocent though full of regard for the steward.

?I should hope not,? he said softly, feeling for the young Hellsing who would very likely grow up seeing more death in her lifetime than most anyone.

?I am glad you love me, Walter,? Integral said with a small smile.

?And it?s not just me, but all of your other servants too. You are truly an angel lighting this house of darkness, so do not ever feel alone or unloved.? Walter smiled as he leaned over to kiss the girl?s brow and rose from his perch on the bed.

The Angel of Death was about to return to his duties, as he had successfully eased his master?s tears, when he noticed the girl was now in deep contemplation.

?Walter?if my servants love me?? the girl began. ?Does Alucard love me, too??

Her caretaker was caught a bit off guard. Knowing Integral would not be satisfied until she was answered, he carefully thought of his reply.

?I cannot speak for one so reserved on matters of the heart,? the wise steward admitted before continuing on with his words. ?But let me tell you this, if you ever are in any doubt. Alucard cares for you more than he does his freedom. You are of Hellsing blood, born to a family whom he has come to respect. Even I do not know the circumstances exactly, but your ancestor?s greatest legacy is that Nosferatu has so willingly been tamed. Do not think for a moment that he would have let himself be captured otherwise. Alucard loves you enough to give you his protection. He will always be true to the Hellsing name.?*

<>*<>*<>

Integral awoke from her dreams suddenly. First a steamy scene with Alucard, next a memory from her past. The woman knew these were not ordinary dreams?they were too real for that. She looked out of her window, starlight still shining through on the clear night. Her vampire had let her wake up for a reason. The night had not yet passed?he must be waiting somewhere nearby.

?Alucard,? Integral hissed, her mood darkening. He knew very well he was not to impose her with visions while sleeping, easily manipulating her in a world beyond dreams.

?My Master,? her vampire calmly answered. His voice was close and cool against her cheek.

Integral cursed at herself for calling him, when she was in possibly the worst position to battle with him. Her body seemed as breakable as glass in her thin, white nightgown; her glasses where nowhere in reach; and she had just kicked all the covers off of her bed due to tossing and turning during her dreams. But she had to know what exactly Alcuard was up to.

The vampire laughed at her internal scolding, and spoke again, ?Did you call??

?Why did you give me those visions, Alucard? Are you trying to make me angry?? Integral released her frosty glare upon him.

?I wanted you to know?I can be gentle,? he purred, creeping slowly above her vulnerable form.

Integral sank down in her mattress as the vampire hovered above her.

?Why?why are you doing this?? she breathed. ?What it is you really want??

?It is never about what I want, Master.?

?Are you saying that I somehow want you? That you?re doing me a favor?? Integral hissed. It was really starting to bother her how close he was without actually touching her. It appeared that he could comfortably float just barely above her all night.

Alucard chuckled, bringing his head down right above hers. ?I will serve my Master in any way she wishes. Did you not have fantasies about this? Is this not what you want??

?You made me have those dreams, Alucard. You!? Integral insisted harshly. Her voice was now frigid, and her face seemed carved out of the sharpest ice.

?I do not do this to engage in meaningless sex!? he growled, the vampire?s blunt nature instantly surfacing. ?If I was so inclined, I could get that anytime, anywhere. Should I seduce Seras Victoria for a demonstration?**? His mouth remained curled in a sneer, his display of fangs adding to his wicked sense of justice.

Integral was so angry she could not even utter a word. Instead she slammed both of her fists up into the floating chest of the vampire. Although Alucard should have guessed such a reaction, it still startled him into crashing down upon her, although he faded before his body landed on her own. He had gone a bit too far, he knew, and rolled over on the giant bed next to her. When he had appeared again fully, Integral?s body was tensed and turned away from him.

Propping his hands under his head, Alucard released a cool breath of air to calm both of their fires and then spoke in a softer tone.

?True vampires, especially the old ones, know that to love a mortal is one of the greatest sacrifices. In all too short a time, their fragile bodies pass on to a place we, the undead, are forbidden.?

Alucard did not often speak of the ways of his kind, unless he was bragging about himself. His words were personal, the kind he shared to his Master between quiet moments of just being in one another?s company--something that, because of work, did not happen as often as they would have liked. But at least his previous comment had been effective in washing her anger away into more of curiosity. Integral turned around to look at him, though her gaze was skeptic.

?I speak?from experience,? the vampire said. ?When you are first born into the darkness, you try to live just as you had before. Take my excellent police woman as an example. But when everyone around you ages and dies, soon you realize that you can never be human again. You begin to accept what you truly are. And if you still try to pretend, then you won?t be alive long enough to realize you are a fool.?

Integral tried to make sense of what he had had been telling her?especially about humans and vampires.

?So?what?are you saying your kind can love humans, but it really isn?t worth all the trouble?? Integral asked incredulously.

?Of course we can love,? Alucard?s voice now seemed offended. ?We are not corpses, we still feel?though the centuries may numb our senses. We experience pain and pleasure. They might not feel the same for humans, but they are there nonetheless?with the added potential to last forever. Such is the way of the damned. Such is why we choose our lovers carefully.?

?Why are you telling me this?? the young woman questioned wearily. She was now lying on her back, looking up at the ceiling just like Alucard.

?You mean you do not know?? the vampire asked, a glint catching his eye as he propped up on his elbow and cradled his chin in his palm to look at her.

?This is not acceptable, Alucard. You know my duty to my family. You, out of everyone, should know the honor of the Hellsing name. I will not jeopardize that.?

The vampire?s eyes flashed, and in an instant he had pounced on his dazed bed partner.

?Do not be so selfish in thinking you have the most to lose.? Alucard snarled, in a tone that was hard to place. It was both angry and well-meant, tinged with sorrow and regret.

Integral?s jaw dropped open slightly, surprised by his words. It was often so easy to forget that, despite appearances, a monster and a human were more similar than one would like to think.

?I?m going to kiss you now,? Alucard said suddenly, his voice growing raspy. The feeling of Integral under him heated the vampire more than his frustration at her worn-out excuses. He gave her plenty of time to reply, even if it was in protest. But when no words came, Alucard lunged down to claim her already parted lips. At first his kisses seemed hungry, and the dazed woman found herself clinging to him desperately, his passion both dizzying and demanding. Soon, however, Alucard relaxed against her like the vampire in her dreams. His lips were soft and seductive, and not as icy as she would have imagined. They had a pleasing coolness in contrast to her heated body, and his mouth tasted like the red wine he nursed constantly.

Unlike Integral?s earlier dream, this felt very real. Before she knew it, Alucard had discarded the flimsy shirt he had been wearing, and his skin was practically begging to be touched. The primal noises Integral could hear him trying to suppress in the back of his throat somehow delighted her, and she smoothed her hands against his muscled torso, wanting to force him to growl.

He did so, and his once slow and deliberate caresses grew a bit more frenzied. His lips still claimed hers possessively, but his hands began to roam. He slid down the strap of the silky fabric of her nightgown, which was preventing him from being able to touch all of her, and kissed along her collarbone as if bringing a feather to brush against her skin. His palm rubbed against her bare shoulder, and was slowly starting to move down when her small voice brought the vampire?s actions to a halt.

?I?can?t.?

?Are we breaking any rules?? Alucard?s voice was pressing, as he lifted himself up to look at her.

?They are unspoken,? Integral said dully, her eyes refusing to meet his.

?If one does not utter them, then they do not exist,? Alucard insisted, and couldn?t stop himself from briefly dipping into her thoughts. What was there enraged him. Why? Why was she still denying herself the right to indulge in her feelings?

?You have nothing to be ashamed of!? he whispered harshly, doing his best to contain his boiling blood. ?And if you still are, then I willingly admit I was a fool for misjudging you. Did you not understand my vision of you and Walter? I have known Hellsing ancestors from before you were born. I would know if this is forbidden. Only you choose to make it so.?

?I--? Integral stopped. She was at a loss for words. Could this be true?

?Your greatest enemy in this matter is yourself. Let me take some of your burdens, let me release some of your desires. This will be enough to content me for centuries, and lessen the pain of knowing the time we have together is but a sigh in this undying universe.?

Integral couldn?t help but think back to his words every year since she was eighteen.

I bid you, Master, do what you will. As your servant, my body is yours.

?You must understand,? Alucard spoke again. ?I give myself to you not because I have to, but because I want to. Your time is too goddamn short for me to wait patiently, as I would prefer. I am not asking you to be mine forever. I am simply hoping you will allow me to be yours.?

?But your visits...on my birthday, they were just a joke,? Integral stammered softly, the icy shield of her eyes still refusing to see the truth.

?Perhaps they used to be.?

The vampire had finally had enough of his master?s nonsense, and vanished from the room. Until she was ready to stop pretending that she neither had--or was not supposed to have?any feelings, and nor did he, there was nothing that could be done. Humans--even his--were still all incomprehensible, and Alucard felt glad he was still a very patient creature of the night. He sunk through the mansion?s floors and walls into his dungeon chambers, and filled his wine glass for the wait ahead. If his Master was ever going to defeat her denial, from this point on, she could only do it herself.

~*~*~

FEBRUARY 4

Everything was laid out as it was every year?the cake, the tea, the roses--but she hadn?t even touched the birthday offerings resting upon the elegant china plate.

Integral sat upon the edge of her bed with slumped shoulders, her hands wrapped loosely at her sides. She fingered the material of her nightgown nervously. It was the color of blush, but that hardly mattered now. Her realization had come too late.

?Do not be so selfish in thinking you have the most to lose.?

Alucard?s passionate words still haunted her. For her entire adult life, Integral had been heart-wrenchingly successful in consistently pretending that nothing mattered but her duty to the Hellsing name. She was so certain she would lose everything if she succumbed to desires she was too afraid to indulge, that she never even realized another was willing to sacrifice so much more.

And, her biggest pretend***, she had now come to see, was that her duty would forever deny her the one she could never lose.

It was Alucard who had saved her this time, once again--who forced her to realize she had constantly been denying herself, with a self-imposed obligation coating her fears. And whether she was scared, or jaded in denial, Integral discovered these things were all governed by her own choice.

She was the only one responsible for releasing her own demons. She was the only one who could take them back again, and shut them up where they belonged.

DUN! The grandfather clock in her room rang out loudly, interrupting her thoughts. It reminded her of the unfolding present, and of her birthday, which was just about to pass.

Integral?s gaze lingered on her wooden door?which she had checked three times already?her mind willing it to swing open as the clock continued to chime.

Perhaps it all might have ended differently?but she had been?for once?too shy to call out his name.

~*~*~

FEBRUARY 5

The last of the twelve gongs echoed through her room. Integral still sat lifeless on her bed, completely stunned.

He--Alucard had not come.

A shudder passed through her suddenly, and as school-girlish at is may have seemed, something told Integral that she should open her door, one last time?

?You must forgive me. I was under orders that detained me until now.?

Alucard stood before his master, a small smile upon his features. His face was calm as he silently reminded her of the earlier command.

?I don?t want to see you that evening. It?s my birthday, for heaven?s sake.?

Integral?s eyes went wide and the vampire nodded. She couldn?t blame him for his belated birthday appearance, for he was obeying her own wishes, after all.

The blonde woman remained in the doorway; this entire event seemed surreal. She looked at Alucard, whose face had never appeared so serene, or so handsome. He was wearing no shirt at all for this year?s seduction, and Integral had the sneaking suspicion that his tall, chiseled form might be just the incentive she needed to finally let go of her inhibitions.

The corner of Alucard?s mouth turned upwards as he took note of the approval of his clothing?or rather lack thereof?in Integral?s wandering eyes.

And finally, not wishing to waste any more precious time, the vampire began his predictable discourse.

?I bid you, Master, do what you will. As your servant--?

?Shut up.?

He laughed to himself upon the glimpse into her mind, as Integral?s stare captured his so intensely, it quieted him. Latching her fingers on the top of his pants, she wordlessly pulled the vampire into her room, and to ensure his silence, sealed his lips with a kiss.

Never was Alucard more pleased to follow her every command, as the traditional birthday door slammed?for the very first time?behind him.

THE END
Or is it? I know that everyone round here loves a good lemon. But, alas, I don't write them. If anyone is inspired to, just lemme know, and this little ending scene could totally continue. ;)

Notes:

*Just wanted to note about the interesting relationship Alucard has with the Hellsing family. For someone having to serve them, he doesn?t seem all that bothered by it. It even appears he respects them?at the very least Integral?s father--as can be seen in Order 10 during Integra?s flashback Alucard ?says that her spirit is wonderful; she must certainly be ?his? daughter.? (as noted in the ?Intensity? website). And thus is the reasoning behind Walter?s explanation. J

**Ok, a note about this comment. I am a Seras fan. No, I don?t think that Alucard has any remote interest in her that way. That having been noted, Alucard?s comment was said in bad taste and in teasing, as the anime has the hint that Integral is not pleased (jealous, perhaps?) of the whole Alucard having a new pet thing (at least in the beginning).

***phrase taken from the recent Peter Pan movie?I couldn?t resist ^^;; (I am so corny)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Author?s notes about researching/theorizing about a vampire?s past, if anyone is interested:

So, hi! If you have some extra time and wanted to know the ideas behind this story, feel free to read this rambling.

I tried my best to be accurate for this story. Since I had only seen the anime, I knew I was missing out on some infamous bits of enlightenment gained from reading the manga. From what I have seen in some scans, there was a memorable scene when Alucard cries. And I believe it is from when he first becomes bound to the Hellsings. Knowing this, and learning the details of Bram?s Stoker?s Dracula, I hoped my story could somehow work with these two glimpses into Alucard?s past. (Although I realize the manga universe is somewhat separate from the animated one.) However, like the anime, I don?t want to just tell the reader what really happened. Alucard?s origins are perhaps better left to the imagination.

So, I?m going along with the fact that Integral is indeed the descendent of Abraham van Helsing, the scholarly vampire hunter of Stoker?s tale. In the story, a man named Jon Harker first encountered Dracula, and the vampire Count seemed to have taken a fancy to Harker?s wife, Mina, and manages to seduce her. Lots of things happen, but by the end, Helsing, the Harkers, and others go to Dracula?s castle. The vampire is defeated, and Mina is released from Dracula?s hold. (Summarized from Intensity?s awesome info: please look under the headings ?Honor? then ?Precedent? at www.hellsing.nu/integral)

Next, looking at manga scans, it seems very likely that Integral?s ancestor made a reference to Mina when he defeated Alucard, and it also suggests that the vampire may have cared for her.

Ok?this is where I start really rambling. Read at your own risk, cause these are some theories that I didn?t want to include in the story, so they get dumped here! And they are probably nothing new, but anways?

In my story, when I have Alucard claiming to have experience with loving a human, his relationship with Mina is what I am referring to, although I left it vague because it?s most likely he had previous relationships. I really cannot imagine what poor Alucard has been through?knowing that if he did ever fall in love with a human (obviously enough to not want to turn her into a vampire, or at least give her a choice), that in the blink of his immortal eye, his lover would all too soon pass away?

My theory (mixing manga with the Dracula legend) is that by the time a Hellsing first encountered the vampire, Alucard had been a dark Lord for some time and was living quite miserably, hidden away in his castle. Who knows what happened before then, or what caused him to be this way, but for some reason, Dracula wasn?t as happy as you?d think for someone who could never die. He may have indeed cared for Mina?but obviously not enough. If he had, I?m sure he would have used his unimaginable powers to kick everyone?s ass who tried to take her away. It?s hard to believe someone as powerful as Alucard could ever be defeated by mere mortals; therefore, as I mentioned before, I have to conclude the vampire had a choice in the matter and let himself be captured willingly.

Abraham van Helsing was a brilliant man. He probably outsmarted the vampire (which is not as hard to do as one would like to think?i.e. Incognito?s infiltration of the Hellsing mansion). But even so, I don?t think anyone could truly contain a vampire without his consent for long. And here?s where legend and anime might sway. After he lost Mina and his castle, was outsmarted, and probably was none too happy to begin with, perhaps Alucard just stopped caring about a lot of things?even the fact that someone was trying to capture him, and in the end, didn?t bother to prevent it. Perhaps van Helsing, being an intelligent man and seeing the benefits that a power like Dracula would have if tamed, strikes some sort of deal with the vamp?like, van Helsing won?t kill him if Alucard agrees to take the Helsings as his masters. A tempting possibility, but who knows for certain?

The ?Divine Act of Satan? Alucard shrine mentions the following script on Alucard?s coffin: ?Bird of Hermes is my name, eating my own wings to make me tame.? In other words, Alucard himself devoured his freedom. Although serving a human family probably doesn?t seem like the most pleasing idea to an ancient vampire, it might actually have some unexpected perks. It could be that being bound to the Hellsings gives Alucard?s life some sort of purpose, order, and also provides constant companionship, so long as the family line survives. If you were a creature who could live forever, and probably did all the things you had ever wanted to do in your first few hundred years, would being bound to a strong family really seem all that bad? At least I would think not, and Alucard?s actions in the series seem to agree. ;)

Thanks so, so much for listening to all of my ramblings. If anyone ever wants to speculate about histories or other ideas in Hellsing, I?m always up for a good intrigue! Don?t hesitate to reply to this or send me a PM.

Love,
Sphinx

What a brilliant and well crafted fic. Really-- how fast you cranked this out was remarkable. How diligently you spent hours, pouring over this? Incredible and incredulous. <shaking head> It's amazing. =) This is what every Hellsing fic should be, but isn't. (I scoured the pages of ffnet and was disappointed, as usual.) Now, all I demand is my payment-- there is no shirtless vampire, lurking over my bed! I'm not picky-- I'll take a shirtless Vash, Kyo, or Trowa as a substitute. ;D

This part just pretty much left me speechless, I'm in awe! I think my fav part though was their deep conversation while laying in bed, so many parts you covered seems so true and you can't help but feel the pain that Alucard expresses with this:
Your time is too goddamn short for me to wait patiently, as I would prefer. I am not asking you to be mine forever. I am simply hoping you will allow me to be yours.?
I'm glad he finally started to get through those thick thoughts of hers when he explained about how he knew her ancestors and their behavior. About time someone pointed things out to her!!

Lovely images on him standing at the doorway at the end and how she found a way to pull him into the room. Too bad you don't write lemons though, I think you would do them justice :D

As for the crying bit in the manga, I was just looking at that since I have those parts saved here at work, just the image of him crying and him being shocked by not only crying but because of him dreaming. It seems that it was Anderson in his dream who had staked him and Alucard perhaps hearing the words from Anderson's lips about everything that Alucard has lost, which perhaps made him feel something towards that. Either way, still an awesome piece in the manga. Not often you see Alucard vulnerable.

Anywho, wonderful fic for writing this series for the 1st time! :bounce: :D
It was Abraham Van Helsing actually, there's even a Mina reference there.

Anderson isn't so old and in Hiranoworld used to be the star of his own hentai comic as teenager (pre-order) called 'Angel Dust'. He used to fight drug dealers who menaced the Vatican or something from what I've read.

As for the fic, I enjoy it very much although I am more in the side that Alucard would most likely want to turn her than keep her human (as revenge against van Helsing, because he doesn't like humans too much and out of the potential she would have as a vampire). Regardless the whole fencing fight brought a smile on my lips. Very well written.
You say I have no power? Perhaps you speak truly... But -- you say that Dreams have no power here? Tell me, Lucifer Morningstar.. Ask yourselves, all of you... What power would Hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of Heaven?

Yeah, now that you pointed it out, it does favor Abe. Just threw me off since it also looked like Anderson, makes sense now and the part I was looking at was even in english but didn't say who it was, tis why it confused me. Plus the translation I had, when Abe is yelling at Alucard, he said something about "Her seibeiseki is also gone, she will not become yours." The seibeiseki area of the translation, they even had a note on the bottom saying they weren't sure if that translated to anything, so that could've been the reference to Mina and they just never got around to saying so in the translation I have. Then again I never followed the dracula side of things in order to really get a grasp on who was what and what went on. After reading other ppl's thoughts and study on the matter sounds pretty interesting.

  regarding the Anderson bit.

Seibeiseki is 'holy mark', Mina's forehead was marked with a holy wafer on the front that indicated she was damned, when it banished mean she came back to human :)
Is fine, is the scene of Dracula's capture and Anderson and Alucard met for first time in vol 1 (no secret canonical past), therefore is Abraham (he's calling him 'count'), else Alucard would be calling Anderson, 'Master'.

Don't worry about not knowing, many doesn't, CountRed is also a Dracula/Vlad Tepes fangirl like myself and in her story mentions Abraham a lot.

  regarding the Anderson bit.
The Major Montana Max from Millennium and Pip were also porn stars from another manga called 'Coyote' *head shake*
Anderson was young, not priest yet and if my information is correct he used to have a nurse girlfriend.

Thank God Integra wasn't a recycled character

Hi guys. Thanks so much for the replies! They mean so much.

Dreamer- Um...*is speechless* I cannot thank you enough. This fic wouldn't have been possible without you...remember my horrid attempt at the last chapter? Anyhow, you know what? I have an idea! Since I know you're all into it, you should write a lemony continuation. You know you want to. And don't tell me you're not into the smut...defeat your denial! Ahahaha, man I am so cheesy!

Beck- As always, your comments brighten my day. I'm so happy you enjoyed the fic...but alas, I don't think I'll be able to come up with a lemon. Like, really, I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it. Oh, and in response to one of your earlier comments about wanting to write a Hellsing fic...I really wish you would! But I can totally understand how you feel about not doing it quite right to please everyone. I was really having doubts about writing this fanfiction, because really, I don't think I can ever do the chars justice. I think the AxI relationship is just so amazing and complex, it's so hard to emcompass everything in one story. And there are so many things left unsaid...I felt I could so easily mess something up. But please, I posted, so you should, too, Beck! Here's hoping you do! Thanks again for all your support.

Thess- Wow! You know so much about Hellsing! I should have consulted you before I wrote my story. Thanks for your comments, and further explaining the Abraham van Helsing thing. I was positive I saw the manga crying scene on a website that discussed Mina and Alucard, but alas, I don't remember the site. But you totally explained what it had said.
As for the fic, I enjoy it very much although I am more in the side that Alucard would most likely want to turn her than keep her human (as revenge against van Helsing, because he doesn't like humans too much and out of the potential she would have as a vampire).
You know what, that's a great point. I guess I've always thought that at the end, if Integral was going to be locked up in the tower for a long time, Alucard would really push the vampire thing because he would hate to see his Master like that. Although I could definitely see mixing their blood a bit (that only makes them stronger, right? It doesn't turn them, does it? I am so confused) because after the whole Incognito thing, I think Alucard realized how defenseless against a vampire his Master truly was. But in the second case, if Integral was released from the tower-I wasn't sure Alucard would be that serious about Integral becoming a vampire or even just drinking his blood. (that's why i did address that in my fic...it assumes Integral was released before she accepted Alucard's offer)

But now that you mention it, I totally agree that Alucard would, above all things, love Integral to become a vampire. I just am not sure Integral would ever choose to become one...and he would always give her a choice. But what you said about him seeing potential in her is a great point. I would love to see a fic that dealt with those issues. Man, Thess, now you've really got me thinking. Thanks for all of your enlightening info on the series!

Thanks again everyone!

You're quite welcome! :D

If you have a doubt next time you can ask me (or CountRed she as much I do in the subject and her english is better).

By following Hellsing (manga) rules you need to be a virgin of the opposite gender bitten by a true vampire to be a vampire servant. I supposed (based in Dracula) drinking the blood will turn you into a vampire as well but (in my opinion) free from the beginning.

I may try a vampire Integra's story one day (only because I hate to see her become an uber!slut with mental problems or an angst ridden thing all so depressed!. Did Seras change so much from human to vampire? Did Alucard? No. Why Integra must act so OOC on those fics is beyond me) but wont have AxI pairing too much (maybe the sequel), because Alucard will only appear over the middle part of the fic (but is a delayed project, I have other ones in mind first)
But now that you mention it, I totally agree that Alucard would, above all things, love Integral to become a vampire. I encourage you to talk this with CountRed, she's more skilled in the Alucard characterization than I am, damn her ;_;

But in the Integra part (anime, the manga one never faced this particular issue yet) she would NEVER accept his offer. Even before her duty is her personal honor and in episode 9 is crystal clear she chose her honor over her duty. Check the fic 'Flesh of my Flesh' there's a discussion and Alucard's realization over this at the end , I think it was truly IC.

I think you are directing your own denial of wanting to write a lemon towards me, Miss Sphinx! (I think it's called projection, according to a Freud, whether Sigmund or Anna. That's what I get for being roomies with psych majors!) So, you should defeat your own denial and crank a lemon on your own! ;D bwa ha ha! The discussion is quite intriguing-- Thess-- you make a great point about why do authors create Integral into an OOC, when Seres keeps her human side intact. I never thought about that until I read your post!
