Broken Promises (Songfic, one shot, sap)

Post by stormwind16 »

Ok, so this fic came to mind on a very nice winter day with lots and lots of snow. And very little to do inside the house.
So I hope you like it!

Disclaimer; I don't own Gundam Wing, otherwise I'd made sure Heero and Relena would get together

Warning; Depression and some very little swearing

-------------------------
Broken Promises

Relena had loved him since the first day she met him on that beach. His eyes spoke to her of mystical lands and far away places her foster father had been. She had known immediately he had come from the colonies. He had awoken her curiosity, the first boy that had ever captured her heart.
And she always thought she would fall for a nice normal guy.
She had followed him to everywhere he went, she needed to be near him, to talk to him, to decipher the feeling she had for him, who were then unknown to her.
Everytime she laid eyes on him, her heart would skip a beat. And she mentally slapped herself everytime she drooled on his muscular body.
He had threatened her with death a few times, that would normally vanquish a girl?s interest, but she kept following him, pushing him. She knew there was a good man underneath that stern and dangerous appearance.
He had sworn to protect her, and kept her save trough the Eve Wars and Mariemeia?s coupe de ta.
He had collapsed in her arms, and she had hugged him fiercely. The feel of his hair was not as rough as it seemed to be. His smell made her knees weak, and she was relieved she wasn?t standing.

After that he had stayed with her as her personal bodyguard, he was nearly everywhere she went. She didn?t allow him to follow her into the bathroom, otherwise he would have.
She was reasonably happy, she didn?t have the man she loved the way she wanted. But at least he was there with her every day, and she had the security he wouldn?t leave. A mission is still a mission to Heero, the one thing he would never ignore.
Relena had spent 2 years with her bodyguard, and her love for him kept growing. Even tough she always thought she couldn?t love him more. He would then do something that made her heart sworn with fuzzy feelings.
Everynight she sat down on her bed, calming her nerves. She tried to control her emotions, because everyday it became harder to not tell him that she loved him.
Everyday he touched her or said something to her, she had to slap herself at least 5 times to keep her feelings to herself. And now even that wasn?t helping much.
And one day, after 2 years, she couldn?t hold them back.

He passed her in the hallway, and their shoulders touched.
Electricity surged through her body, her heart skipped a few beats and her breath caught. How was one man able to do something a gun or Gundam wouldn?t do to her?
She steadied her feet and walked in her usual speed towards her office. She passed her secretary and greeted her with a large smile. Kat smiled back at her and greeted her in a Duo kind of way.
Relena opened her office door and looked around the room out of habit.
The room was the largest in the building, in size it could be compared to a classroom. The very light blue walls gave a cool and relaxed atmosphere, witch was nice in the very hot summers the Sanq Kingdom had. A large wooden desk was planted in the middle, with a black leather chair behind it.
On the table must have been at least 3 feet off files waiting to be catalogued, signed and returned.
As her eyes caught the files, she sighed and looked at the clock. 5 PM, she hopped she could go home early tonight. ?Not a change.? A small voice from in her head said.
Relena seated herself on her chair and started to read the files. And at 5 PM that gave quite the headache.

3 hours later, and still 1 feet files to go, a hand smashed on the table. Relena jumped and gave the attacker her full attention.
?It?s 8 o?clock, it?s time to go home.?
?Yeah, I know Heero, but I have a deadline on these files, they have to be done by tomorrow, and...?
Heero interrupted her by giving one of his best death glares. Relena didn?t even winch.
?You need to eat Relena, you look like you didn?t get any sleep for a week.?
?How did you know?? Was her sarcastic reply.
That was not very well taken.
Heero grabbed her arm and pulled her off the chair. He lifted her up and walked out of her office. ?Wait Heero! My briefcase and agenda!? Relena said trying to wiggle loose from his tight grip.
Heero didn?t budge.
Relena suddenly realized how close she was to Heero. She felt herself blush, she must have looked like a very ripe tomato. Her heart beated at a very unhealthy pace. This wasn?t looking very good.
She needed to get loose, yet her body gave in. She let herself be carried, and put in her pink limousine.
Relieved she left out a heavy sigh, which in turn made Heero lift an eyebrow slightly.
Once again she blushed, this was really not good.
She held her hand in front of her mouth, she was going to tell, she knew it. ?Please let him be quite!!? She prayed in her head.
?Relena.? Heero said dangerously, sensing there was something wrong.
?I love you Heero.? She suddenly blurted out. ?There is no God.?
The limousine suddenly felt like the car clowns in cartoons drive. The silence was very unnerving.
She had placed her hand over her eyes, waiting for him to say he didn?t love her. But those words never came.
She spread her fingers and glanced at the man from the corner of her eye.
Heero sat there like nothing had happened, he had crossed his arms and closed his eyes. He looked asleep, but Relena knew otherwise. This was his way of total concentration, like he always did when assessing a situation, or whenever she was in a very boring meeting.
He suddenly opened his eyes and leaned forward to press the bottom that let down the driver?s window.
?Pagan, please stop the car.? He said calmly and completely in control of his voice.
Pagan nodded and stopped the car. ?What?s wrong Mr. Yuy?? He asked kindly.
?Nothing is wrong Pagan.? He replied, and then turned to Relena.
?You?ll be having my resignation by tomorrow.?
Before realization settled in, Heero had already slammed the door and walked off.
She gasped and tears rolled down her face. Heero had indirectly said he didn?t love her. He was leaving her, she would never see him again.
Relena grabbed her shirt near her heart. Her heart felt like Heero and slammed his hand in her chest and had tore her heart out. No, wait it felt worse.
Relena choked on her own tears, the tears kept coming, they came so fast, Relena could hardly keep up with breathing.
She wanted to crawl into a corner and die, yet she wanted to break everything in the car, and soon her own room. She had never felt love before she met Heero, but she also had never felt so much pain.

?The day you left me
There was a feeling I have never shown
The day you told me
There were the words that I have never known
And now it?s over
So what?s left that I should ever feel?
Cause since the day you left me, I?ve been so alone?

Heero must hate her for saying that to him.
He never broke a promise, or an order, or a mission. And surely not all 3 at the same time.
Did he really hate her that much? Was she so unpleasant to be around?
Relena lifted herself from her bed, where she had spent the last 3 hours since Heero left, thinking.
She walked towards her balcony window and opened the doors slowly.
Every movement her body made seemed extremely heavy. She felt all her muscles struggle against the pressure of standing.
Relena dropped to her knees when she had made it to the cold evening air. ?Why God? Why did you do this to me? Am I not allowed to be happy? Didn?t I deserve it by attaining peace? Please God tell me! What did I do to make him hate me so much??
Relena started crying again, the tears never seemed to end. Only one question surged through her system. She needed the answer, she wanted to scream the question. And for once she didn?t hold back. ?Heero why did you break your promise??!!?

?And now we?re left with broken promises
My heart can?t take no more
And now we?re left with broken promises
My mind has had enough?

2 days, it had been 2 days since Heero left.
He had given her his resignation as he had said. At least she could still believe his word.
Relena had asked the same question over and over again to herself the last 2 days. And she finally found a solution. She believed God was deliberately hurting her for fun, as a punishment for falling for a guy who represented the one thing I apposed, war.

Relena kept her perfect smile for friends and politicians. Her friends would ask how she was, and if she had any problems with Heero leaving. She would tell them that she didn?t have any problems with it and that she wanted him to be happy, and if this was the way, than so be it. It disgusted her, to have to lie to her friends. Altough she wasn?t completely lying, she wanted him to be happy, but she wanted him to be happy with her. It felt so selfish to thing that way, but wasn?t she allowed to act selfish for once in her life after giving so much to the people of the colonies and earth?

When she was finally alone, she would sit on her bed and just stare into oblivion for a few minutes, sometimes an hour and she would think about the things that happened that day. She would feel tired, and completely wrong for this world. She didn?t feel needed, or loved, nobody seemed to care how she felt. Nobody saw what her mask covered, not even the trained Gundam Pilots.
She would think about the one thing that she craved for, and what she needed the most in her life. To be loved, especially by Heero. She would cry herself to sleep every night.

Every morning she woke up, still tired. Nearly unable to raise a finger.
But everyday she forced herself to get up and face another day with fake smiles.
God she felt awful.
The last 2 days Relena had hardly slept or eaten. She just didn?t feel the need to.

At one point at the end of the third day, she caught herself fantasizing of her own death.
And she thought about her friend, who had no clue of what was going on.

?Deep inside me
There are things that I have never told
They burn inside me
And now I need to know
Why are you trying to take everything away from me
Well I?m begging you
I?m here with nothing left to show
Cause since the day you left me, I?ve been so alone

And now we?re left with broken promises
My heart can?t take no more
And now we?re left with broken promises
My mind has had enough

At the end of the fourth day, Relena had a feeling not yet known to her.
She had been thinking about Heero again, about the way he left her.
He had turned his back on her leaving her in the cold. Breaking his promise to her.
She hated when people did that.
Somehow she didn?t feel said, the bastard had left her in a way no girl should be treated. It was not fair.
He could have at least told her that he didn?t love her. That would have been fair, she didn?t demand that he had to be her lover. A friend would have been good enough, and that would have been accomplished if he said those 4 words.

She leaned on her balcony, thinking about things that she could say to him if she ever saw him again.
A few very bad things came to mind. Which made her grin, a true, unfazed grin.
Then her thought wandered to his resignation, didn?t she have any say in that?

?Look at how you turned on me
You ran away and left me here with nothing to see
I?m a strong girl so turn around and say it to me
Don?t you think I?ve got something to say?
Look at how you turned on me
You ran away and left me here with nothing to see
I?m a strong girl so turn around and say it to me
Don?t you think I?ve got something to say?
Look at how you turned on me
You ran away and left me here with nothing see
I?m a strong girl so turn around and say it to me
Don?t you think I?ve got something to say??

Relena turned towards her room, ready to get some sleep.
She got into her bed, warming her body from the cold autumn night breeze.
She had nearly fallen asleep when a soft ?tumb? from her balcony shot trough her senses.
The sight of nobody but Heero very swiftly relinquished the thought of a burglar or kidnapper.
Her eyes widened, she would rather have had the kidnapper.

He opened the balcony windows and smoothly stepped into her room.
The way his muscles moved in the moonlight made him look like and angle. The silver aura gave him a peaceful appearance. But Relena was not fooled.
He looked nerves, nearly afraid. She had never seen him like that. She noticed him scanning the room for any cameras or bugs. He was definitely up to something.

Relena assessed the situation, coming to a conclusion to why he was here.
He was going to keep one promise, the promise of taking her life.
She smiled, if anybody was allowed to do it, he was.
If you viewed it differently, he already did, by killing her heart. When you kill someone?s heart, you?ll kill the person itself, but in a very very slow and painful way.
Frankly, Relena preferred a bullet, so she welcomed the idea he was at least going to keep that promise.

?Relena.? He said softly, checking if she was awake.
?Heero.? She returned his name.
He stepped closer to the bed. Maybe he wanted to see her die unclose and personal.
Heero stood there for a few seconds before seating himself on the bed.
That was unexpected, he didn?t even have a gun. That was very strange.
She needed to know. ?What are you doing here Heero?? She couldn?t stop the pain in her voice.
?I?m sorry it took me so long to return Relena.? He said softly, his normally monotone voice sounded friendly and calm somehow.
Relena raised an eyebrow, even tough it wasn?t visible in the dark room.
?I needed to get you something, I saw it 6 months ago when you had a conference meeting in New York. Only the flight home got cancelled, and I wasn?t able to get home till 6 hours ago.? He had to push the words out.
?Please Heero, just tell me why your here.? A few tears escaped the safety of her eyes, and she hastily wiped them away. She didn?t want him to see her cry.
?Relena, it?s very hard for me to say. Please listen.?
For the first time since she met him, he asked HER to listen. It would have been funny to her if she wasn?t extremely heartbroken.
?When you said you love me, did you mean it?? He asked unsure. Relena felt the tension in the room, her answer would define the rest of their conversation. The best answer would be ?no?, but she couldn?t lie. ?Yes.? She said simply, trying to sound as cool as possible, but failing miserably.
Heero nodded, and the tension in the room left as fast as it came.
?Good.? He said and gave her a half smile, something he only gave on very special occasions.
Heero pushed his hand into his pocket and pulled out what looked like a square cube. Relena frowned, unsure of what to expect.
He opened the small black box and flashed the content in the moonlight.
A beautiful ring graced the inside of the box. An ordinary golden band graced with a simple diamond. It was something she would have picked out for herself. Not to classy, not to ordinary. Just perfect.
?Relena, will you marry me?? Heero asked in a whisper.
God she wanted to say yes, but what he did to her was unacceptable. So she did the only thing a girl in her position could do to keep her pride. She slapped him in the face.
He winced back and looked at her questionably. ?Do you know what I?ve been through the last 3 days? I?ve wondered about what in God?s sake I did wrong! I haven?t eaten or slept, and most of all I cried so much I felt like a dried off sponge! Really Heero, you think you can just waltz in here and ask me to marry you and be forgiven?!?
Heero looked at her, knowing very well he was quilty as hell, and in deep shit. He closed the ring box before resuming his stare at Relena.
She still had one question. ?Why did you resign??
?I couldn?t be your husband and your bodyguard, so I decided to be your husband.?
?Why? You never break a promise, an order and you definitely never ever deny a mission.? She asked really wanting to know the answer to this one, since she had run in through her mind over and over again in the past 4 days.
?It?s good to ask on your emotions. And sometimes promises need to be broken to continue with once life and live happily.?
Relena?s jaw dropped on the floor, she didn?t know Heero was that human to have that kind of philosophy. Heero caught the look in Relena?s eyes and answered the unspoken question. ?Duo.?
That explains it.
The two stared at each other for quite some time, neither knowing what to do or say.
Heero finally took the initiative.
?When do you want me back on the job?? He asked, disappointment evident in his voice.
Relena sighed and turned her face away from him. ?I don?t want you to be my bodyguard anymore Heero.? She said softly.
Heero lowered his head, and stood up from his place on the bed.
He turned to leave, but Relena?s words stopped him.
?I want you to be my husband.?
Heero turned towards her and opened the box once more. Slowly returned to his spot on the bed and placed the ring on her finger.
He entwined his fingers with hers and pulled her towards him for their first kiss.

Before theirs lips met, Relene hid a smile and one last thought ran through her mind. ?I quess sometimes it good to brake a promise.?

?And now we?re left with broken promises
My heart can?t take no more
And now we?re left with broken promises
My mind has had enough
And now we?re left with broken promises
My heart can?t take no more
And now we?re left with broken promises
My mind has had enough?

I do love sappy one shots! That really was nice. I liked it a lot, especially the scene where Heero asks Pagan to stop and gets out in the middle of the street. That is so him! Great job.

And Relena, of course you want him as your husband. Duh. Who wouldn't?

Sap. Whatever they said on that. I could definitely picture Heero acting like that. And, of course, I luv the ending.
