New Year’s Challenge

Disclaimer: unfortunately i don't own Van and HItomi or Escaflowne, and I don't know for sure who does but HEY!! I'm not making money out of this so whats the problem? ^_^

A New Year and a Blossoming Life

Hitomi stood on the balcony, the wind dancing with her honey-brown hair and the stars twinkling in her olive-green eyes. It was dark and the two moons could be seen clearly in the blackened sky. But it was a certain greeny-blue moon that she was looking at.

It had been almost a month since she’d last seen her family and friends on Earth, and less than three weeks since she’d arrived on Gaeia for the second time. It wasn’t as if she regretted returning to Fanelia, it was just that she missed the people she’d left back on Earth, the people she loved. Most of the time she would be so overcome with the joy of being engaged to Van, that her home sickness would vanish; but it was times like this when she was alone while Van was at his meetings, that she’d feel the still strong pang of longing.

She was so deep in thought that she didn’t hear Van step onto the balcony.

He stood there and watched as his would-be-wife gazed wonderingly up at the Mystic Moon. Hitomi had been acting strangely for almost a week. Wandering around the castle with that sad, pining look in her eyes. Every once in awhile a silvery tear would steal its way down her cheek.

It always did sadden him to see her cry, but there was nothing he could do. He knew the cause of her sorrow, and knew that the most probable cure was to help her go back to the Mystic Moon.

Part of him would do anything and everything to make her happy, while the other smaller, selfish part of him didn’t want to let her go. “I’ve only just got her back, what makes you think that after five years of pain and heartache; I’m going to let her leave again that easily?

“Van?” Hitomi had snapped out of her reverie and had sensed the familiar presence of her fianc?e in the background. “I have something to ask you.”

Hs heart started hammering in his chest, he could taste the foul bile rising up his throat. Was this it? Was she going to ask him to send her back? Would this be the last time he’d ever see Hitomi’s face again? All these questions and more whizzed around his brain, eager to be answered.

As she turned around Hitomi wiped the tears away. “I will never forget them,” she said aloud, “but I can’t spend the rest of my life crying my eyes out because I miss them.”

Turning to Van she put on a watery smile, he could clearly see that the smile didn’t reach her usually gleaming eyes.

“Van…I…I want to apologize, for all the trouble I’ve caused during the short time I’ve been here. I hope you can forgive me.” She gazed into his eyes trying to see what was there. She saw love, anguish and…and was that forgiveness in his eyes?

“Hitomi, you’ve done nothing wrong, it should be me asking your forgiveness. You only ever seem this way when you’re lonely, and I spend most of my time working on Fanelia’s problems than with you. So, from now on, I’m going to share my time equally between you and Fanelia.”

“Really?” Hitomi asked slightly shocked.

“Anything for the girl of my dreams.”

Hitomi scoffed at him. “I guess love has made Mr High-Mighty-and-Proud, step down a level huh?”

Van didn’t reply, instead, he drew Hitomi closer to him and warmly embraced her; meanwhile whispering, “Didn’t you say yesterday that today at midnight would be the start of a new year on the Mystic Moon?”

“Yeah. Why?” Hitomi asked, clearly befuddled.

“And didn’t you say that when the clock strikes twelve, every couple is supposed to kiss?”

“What are you driving at?”

Instead of answering her question, Van smiled broadly and started counting down from twenty.

“20, 19, 18, 17…”

“Van?”

“15, 14, 13…”

If she wasn’t already totally confused then, Hitomi was struck dumb when she heard more voices counting down in one great rumble voice. Looking over the balcony, all she could see was a sea of Fanelians holding banners, waving colourful flags and posters in the air and everyone holding a golden bell.

Hitomi realising what was happening, joined in for the last ten seconds.

“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.”

As millions of bells clanged as a sweet golden melody, and as bright, colourful fireworks lit the sky; Van and Hitomi their faces shining with love for one another were joined in a passionate kiss that not only meant the beginning of a new year, but also the start of a new and wonderful life together as Fanelia’s King and Queen.

A/N- this is my 1st posted fic so please be kind, besides i had to count the amount of words and i think its exactly 800. Tornin1/2

WOW! *hugs the noob* That was sooooo, soooooo cute! I loved it. If I had a button that marked: Add story to favorites, I'd add this one only because it was cute, I loved it, it had VxH fluff (which I die for!), and it was beautifully written from my point of view.

Keep up the great work, Tornin. And welcome to the club! Hope it meet's your while! *hugs again, then pokes* Write more VxH fluff! This forum is lacking it badly!

i have finally read the fanfic, didn't know it was that good. Anyway you should read the rest of her fanfics. they are so...well so good.
