The End of the Curse

"Once, when I was younger, the kids in my class played a game where they went around assigning everyone the name of a fruit. I asked them 'what should I be?' They laughed and told me 'You can be the rice ball'. Then they started running around chasing each other, playing... Every so often, they'd call out the name of another fruit, and that child would get to join in. But they never called me. I was too dumb to realize...there's no rice ball in a fruits basket."

The End of the Curse

This is short and angsty. I wrote this in just a few minutes. And I didn't feel like writing a long one, so a short one it is.

The End of the Curse
by bookworm

A group of people stood in front of a tomb stone. The day was bright and sunny, yet the people didn?t feel happy at all. Some of them cried openly while others stood stoically while staring at the stone bearing a person that had given most of them so much without asking for anything else.

An orange-haired boy went down on his knees and drove his fist on the ground. ?Damn it, why did you have to die? Why did it have to be you??

A gray-haired boy heard the other boy?s laments, but didn?t say a word. He had gone inside himself, safe from harm and able to cry without showing it.

Two young girls dimly heard the orange-haired boy?s words, but continued crying while having no answer to what he was asking. They couldn?t know that the family surrounding them, with the exception of the biological family of the dead person, had a secret: a curse that had been broken by the death of a girl.

Each member of the cursed family who had been there when the person died remembered it clearly. The young girl who had been privy to their secret had thrown herself to save the head of their clan when the young man had been about to be hit by a car. It had been the day of graduating from high school, the day that the orange-haired boy would have been locked away if he didn?t beat his rival.

Yet with her last strength, she had brushed her bloodied finger on the head of the clan?s lips, who unconsciously licked it away. The other members of the clan rushed toward the two, but were too late to save the girl.

The end of the curse had come.

Miraculously the head of the clan grew stronger. Members of the curse were able to hug the opposite sex. The three men who had been cursed as a dog, a dragon, and a snake had philosophized that her death ended the curse. This answer didn?t bring any relief to the family members who had known the girl.

Even the head of the cursed clan was not left untouched. Only he knew the last words of the dead girl. As she had lain dying, her touch on his being had given way to a brief mental link. Her mental words had left him left?human.

Save them. Please.

The head of the clan stared at the block of stone, his dark eyes trying to see the girl whose name is etched on it. He had to known the girl, had hated her, and yet in the end had to admire her. As new feelings had been brought forth, thoughts about the curse and its solution came to mind.

Thoughts that were shared by other members of the clan.

Why? Why did you have to die for us?

Myah! That was so sad! But if that's the way the series ends, I'm gonna be pissed at myself for spoiling it. I've only read up to the 4th manga, so I don't know what happens at the end. Though, I think one surprise has already been spoiled for me...::thinks of the Kyo beating Yuki revelation:: Don't think people would end a series is such a sad way though, so ::is happy ending is not spoiled::. Keep posting wonderful fics!
