Chapter 22

?Let go of me!? Kaname cried out as she stumbled in the dark. She had no idea what was happening. First she was huddled in the dirt scared out of her mind and then this huge explosion and gunfire erupted all around.

?Stop it.? Kaname complained as the hand on her arm tightened. ?That hurts!? She was pulled further into the dark and she could feel the cool dampness of the earth surround her. Behind she could hear the echo of gunfire and see a flicker of shadow from the explosion.

?Damn it!? Kaname cursed. Even starring at her feet the blue-haired girl kept stumbling. ?Let go!? She planted her feet solidly and yanked herself free of her captor?s grip. She winched in anticipation of the blow sure to follow.

?Chidori. We don?t have time. We must flee now.? The clam familiar monotone of Sousuke Sagara washed over Kaname.

?Sousuke.? Kaname gasped. At that moment she never felt more relived or happier than when she heard his voice. ?Is that you? What?s happening??

?It?s me. There?s no time for questions.? Sousuke voice was unchanged. He reached behind him.

?But-? Kaname froze when she heard the sound of a knife being drawn. ?What?? Her voice wavered in fear.

?Don?t move.? Sousuke commanded. He stepped behind the girl and slide the knife thru the girl?s bonds. The razor edge easily cut the plastic cuffs and Kaname?s hands were released.

Kaname massaged her wrists gratefully. It had been after almost six hours since they were bound, and they were very numb. She started when she heard a sharp crack and then a soft blue light illuminated the two teens. Kaname felt a surge of relief at the light and the comforting visage of Sousuke. The Mithril sergeant held one of the chemlights in his hand.

?We need to keep moving.? Sousuke said and grabbed Kaname?s wrist. He lead the girl thru the darkened caverns, the glow stick in his hand the only illumination. And somewhere waiting in the dark was the fifth kidnapper, Gauron.

Sousuke was sure of it.

?Who?s hit?? Gwen yelled as he propped his Steyr AUG on top of the boulder he was crouched behind and pulled the trigger. While he would not hit anything, Gwen hoped to cause whoever was shooting at them to duck behind some cover.

?Marlen!? O?Campo yelled back. ?I think he?s dead!?

?Damn!? Gwen cursed. They were so close and now everything had gone to hell. How had the agent found them so quickly? And where was Gauron and the girl? He could only hope that Gauron had taken the girl to the cavern. While it was not like his companion to leave a fight, Gauron was a professional (if a little blood-thirsty) and knew they had to get the girl out by any means necessary. ?Yes, that?s it.? Gwen finally decided. Gauron was getting the girl away from the Mithril agent.

?O?Campo! Can you get Marlen?s weapon?? Gwen asked. He could hear the crack of a 9mm and knew his old friend and Fitz were returning fire. ?We need the firepower!?

?Yeah, I got it!? O?Campo called out. Ten seconds later the staccato burst of automatic fire echoed thru the night as O?Campo fired the dead Marine?s weapon.

?Hell yeah!? Fitz whooped and fired his own pistol at the ravine?s edge.

?Hey, you two close in on our friend.? Gwen called out and pulled himself up. ?I?ll cover you.? He raised his own weapon, braced it against the rock he leaned on, and began to fire on the Mithril?s position.

?You got it!? O?Campo yelled back.

?What?s going on?? Kaname insisted as the two teens hurried thru a forest of stalactites. She gritted her teeth in frustration when Sousuke said nothing and instead pulled on her hand more insistently.

?That?s it!? Kaname planted her feet and refused to budge. ?Who are you? What the hell?s going on?? She refused to move without some answers. ?Did my father send you??

Sousuke regarded her a moment and in the soft blue-light he could see the stubborn resolve in the girl?s face. ?No, your father has nothing to do with this. I?ve been following you on my own since we met.?

?I know that!? Kaname snapped. She winced at the echo her voice made and lowered it to a whisper. ?But why? They said it was because of my father that they-? Kaname trailed off. She could not bring herself to say the rest.

?That?s not true.? Sousuke explained. His eyes scanned the surrounding darkness. They had to keep moving. Gauron was out there. ?You?re a very special girl. And certain terrorists and government agencies want you for the secrets you posses.?

?Terrorists? Secrets? Government agencies?? Kaname boggled at the implications. It sounded like some horrid suspense movie ?Why me? I don?t know any secrets.? Kaname insisted. ?I?m just an ordinary girl.?

?No. You?re special.? Sousuke tugged on the girl?s arm and when she did not resist he lead her deeper into the tunnels. ?That?s why Mithril assigned two soldiers to protect you.?

?Mithril?? Kaname whispered the word as if she were testing the feel of it. ?Two soldiers?? She was even more confused now ?Who are you??

?I?m Sousuke Sagara. Sergeant of Mithril. My callsign is Urzu-7. ID number B-3128.? Sousuke starred straight ahead as he spoke. Now was not the time to get distracted.

?Right.? Kaname drawled. She wondered how often he practiced THAT line. ?So where?s this second soldier pal of yours?? Kaname scoffed. ?I know you think your some big military freak but you actually expect me-?

?Get down!? Sousuke shoved Kaname to the ground and landed on top of her. Kaname cried out when a gunshot narrowly missed Sousuke?s head.

?Well. I must say I?m impressed.? Gauron?s voice echoed throughout the cavern. ?I knew Mithril had an agent watching the girl but two?? Gauron chuckled. ?I admit you surprised me.?

?What? Where is he?? Kaname shivered at the voice. She recognized it as the man who had dragged her mercilessly across Okinawa. She felt helpless at the sound of that voice and she hated it. She clutched at Sousuke?s sleeve with a white-knuckled grip.

Sousuke crouched over Kaname protectively. It was him! There was no doubt, Gauron was alive! ?But how?? His mind raced furiously. He was certain he and Kalinin had finished the blood-thirsty mercenary. Yet the truth was here before him. If Sousuke ever had a nightmare this was it.

?Don?t move.? Sousuke whispered in Kaname?s ear. He carefully shifted and tossed the glow stick he held beneath him across the cavern. It exploded in mid-air as Gauron shot it. Glowing blue liquid splattered over stalactites and the cavern floor.

Sousuke leapt up and fired his weapon in the direction the shot came from. Kaname cried out as he yanked her to her feet and took off running. The cavern echoed loudly from the sound of gunfire. Sousuke fired behind them as often as possible and Gauron?s pistol tried to pick them off.

Kaname ducked her head and did her best to follow Sousuke?s lead. She stumbled over every crack and crevice, and she collided with what seemed to be every stalactite. However, Kaname pushed herself forward. Whatever injuries she suffered were preferable to that creepy guy getting his hands on her.

Finally the stalactite forest ended and the cavern rounded into a sharp bend. Sousuke crouched behind the corner and Kaname hid behind him. He quickly reloaded his MP-5. He had one clip left. ?Chidori. Can you reach the small bag hanging off my belt?? Sousuke whispered and chambered a fresh round into his submachine gun.

?I think so. Why?? Kaname pulled herself closer. She couldn?t see and there was a killer after them. All things considered, Kaname was proud of herself for not screaming at the top of her lungs.

?We need a light.? Sousuke explained. ?We won?t survive stumbling in the dark like this.? He didn?t tell her that they were at Gauron?s mercy in the dark. The mercenary no doubt had NVGs which allowed the mercenary to see perfectly fine in darkness. It was a small margin, but what little light the glow stick provided would help offset Gauron?s edge.

Kaname fumbled through the pouch in question. She blushed at the act but finally pulled out three glow sticks. ?Is this it?? She asked and pressed the lights into Sousuke?s hand.

?Yes. I need you to light them Chidori. Can you do that?? Sousuke was occupied watching the corridor leading from the stalactite forest.

?Y-yeah. I think so.? Kaname fumbled with the lights. They felt like the glow sticks you could get at a concert or carnival. After a few moments guess work she recalled you had to crack them in the middle and shake them. Kaname did so and smiled when the first one began to glow a soft blue.

?Good. Shield the light behind your body and light two more.? After Kaname did as instructed, Sousuke shifted to his feet. ?Now. I want you to stuff two into your pockets.? Sousuke heard the girl rustling around to do as requested. He had to admit, for a civilian, Kaname handled the stress and uncertainties of combat with aplomb.

?Now what?? Kaname whispered. She felt a lot more confident now. Being able to do something, anything, gave her back a sense of control.

Sousuke mentally studied the map he had memorized of the caverns. If he was correct the tunnel they were in branched away from the chamber Gauron waited in. If they followed it they should come across a three way intersection. From there the left most path should lead back to the surface. Gauron had no way of getting ahead of them so they only needed to guard their rear as they moved.

Not a problem.

?Damn!? Crispin swore as his first shot hit the man standing next to Kaname in the shoulder. He had been aiming for the mercenary?s head, but it appeared the sights were off on his weapon. It shot low and to the left. ?Stupid geezer!? Crispin muttered and squeezed off a three-round burst.

Crispin continued to calmly fire as bullets ricocheted off the boulder he hid behind. The return fire of the three remaining mercenaries was getting a lot closer. As bullets whizzed past his head, Crispin had to admit these guys were good. Getting ambushed and with one of their number out of action. The three remaining men (one of them wounded) quickly recovered their wits and began to systematically close in on the Lance Corporal?s position.

They had a fix on his location and their fire was becoming more concentrated and more accurate. Crispin flinched as a rock fragment chipped off and cut his temple. He could feel the sting of blood and sweat mingle as he fired again and again. The tactically prudent thing would be to withdraw. He was outnumbered and Sousuke had retrieved Kaname and escaped into the caverns.

However, Crispin had not intention of leaving. Every moment he remained. Every second he fought gave Sousuke the time he needed to get Kaname to safety.

?Whatever it takes.?

That was the promise. Crispin would stay and buy Sousuke the time he needed. Whatever it took Kaname WOULD return home. It was suicide. He knew that. And Sousuke knew that when he proposed the plan.

Crispin wouldn?t have it any other way.

?Shit!? Crispin ducked down as three bullets impacted the spot he had just occupied. ?They zeroed in already? These guys ARE pros!? Crispin ejected his now empty magazine and loaded a fresh one. It was his last one. The AS engineer rolled over to the right edge of the rock cluster he had hidden behind.

Now in a different position, he aimed his M-16 around the side and began to fire once again. He was alarmed to see that two uninjured mercs had managed to close half the distance in the time it took him to reload. They were less than fifty feet away from the ravine?s edge.

Now, it was just a matter of time.

?Not good enough fuckers.? Crispin grinned viciously and triggered the detonator clipped to his shirt. Three separate explosion ripped across the ravine. He and Sousuke had planted the additional charges when they crept into the ravine. Kaname?s kidnappers threw themselves on the ground and cursed.

?What the HELL??

?SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!?

Crispin sat up and took aim, he needed to compensated for the misaligned sights. One of the men scrambled to his feet and Crispin dropped him with a head shot. However, the mechanic was thrown to the ground when he was struck in the shoulder and chest by a withering hail of return fire from the last two. The M-16 slide into the ravine with a clatter.

?Two left.? Crispin gasped in pain. His left arm felt numb and he could barely make a fist with it. ?No turning back now.? He smiled at the thought and drew the M1911 pistol the old apothecary had given him.

?It?ll be over soon Allie. I promise.?

?Urzu-2, you might want to take a look at this.?

Melissa frowned. She was wearing a headset jacked into the comm. system of the Six-Pack she, Kurz, and ten Mithril Marines were loaded onto. The headset allowed the Sgt. Major to monitor the pilot?s communications and the rest of the Mithril search teams as well.

Melissa unbuckled her safety harness. She shook her head at Kurz?s curious look and carefully picked her way to the cockpit. It was difficult walking thru the tightly packed helicopter but Melissa had plenty of practice.

?What is it?? She yelled over the engine?s roar.

?Over there. Ten O?clock.? The co-pilot yelled back and pointed outside the cockpit to his left.

Melissa leaned over the co-pilot?s head and stared out the bubbled canopy. She saw the dark Okinawan country side. Nothing special as far as she could see. She was about to ask the co-pilot what the hell was he talking about when she saw it. A dot on the dark horizon. An explosion of some sort.

?Who?s gird is that?? Melissa asked. ?Have you called it in??

?Samas Six-five.? The pilot answered. ?The call?s already been made. It?ll be twenty-five mikes before they can reach it.? The cockpit fell silent except for the hum of the rotors and the crackle of the radio.

?How soon can we get there?? Melissa asked. It could be nothing, but it looked suspicious. Who knows, maybe Sousuke and Daniels actually tracked the kidnappers down and was trying to signal them.

?For you Mao? I can make it in ten.? The pilot threw a grin over his shoulder.

?I?ll hold you to that!? Melissa laughed and slapped the pilot on the shoulder. She turned and made her way back to her seat. She tapped Kurz on the shoulder as she strapped herself back in.

?We?re going in hot! Ten mikes!? Melissa yelled over the roar of the wind and rotors into the blonde?s ear. Nodding in understanding, Kurz leaned over to the Marine next to him and repeated Melissa?s instructions. In half a minute all ten Marines had received the message.

?Damn.? The unfamiliar curse was a result of the frustration Sousuke felt. He and Kaname stood at the top of deep drop off. Across the open air was three passageways. Somehow the map he memorized failed to mention the chasm. He dropped one of the lights down the chasm. It barely illuminated the bottom of what looked to be a fifty foot drop.

?What now?? Kaname whispered. She peered around nervously. She could feel that creepy guy?s stare. It was extremely unnerving.

?Don?t worry.? Sousuke assured the girl. ?I?ll get you home.? He meant it too. He just wasn?t sure how. He was certain Gauron must have known about the drop off. That?s why he was taking his time. The hunter stalking his prey.

It was just like the bastard.

Sousuke tossed another chemlight into the mouth of the left most passage. He was glad to see that the mouth was high enough for a person to stand upright. That was good. Sousuke eyed the distance across the chasm to the path they needed to take. It looked to be six maybe seven feet. Normally not a problem to jump, but in these tight quarters. It was less certain.

The scuff of rubber on stone caused both teens to whirl in alarm. Kaname clung to Sousuke?s arm and bit her lip. ?I will not scream. I will not scream!? She told herself.

?Chidori. Hand me one of the lights.? Sousuke whispered. Kaname did as asked and Sousuke hurled the light down the tunnel they had just crawled thru. The light showed an empty passage.

Both teens repressed a sigh. It had been like this for the past fifteen minutes. An virtual eternity when pursued thru the dark. They had been jumping at shadows the entire time. It annoyed Sousuke because he knew that?s what Gauron wanted.

?Chidori. We?re going to have to jump.? Sousuke made up his mind. It was time to seize the initiative. Since they had entered the cavern Gauron had been directing the action. It was time to change that and leaping this chasm would be the first step. Such a desperate act would no doubt surprise the mercenary.

?Are you crazy?? Kaname whispered fiercely. ?I can?t jump that!? She shook her head and backed away.

?Yes you can!? Sousuke grabbed her hand. ? I sorry but it?s the only way.? Sousuke faced the girl fully and looked her in the eyes. ?Do you trust me??

?Huh?? Kaname blinked at the sudden question. She felt her face heat up at his intense look. Despite the dire circumstances, when he held her hand she felt? safe. ?I trust you.? She answered unhesitatingly.

?Good.? Sousuke nodded. He felt immense relief at the blue-haired girl?s trust. Under different circumstances, he would wonder at the intensity of that relief but now was not the time. ?I want you to jump to the other side, where I threw the light. Once across pick up the light and move into the tunnel. I?ll be right behind you.?

?What? Me first. Why?? Kaname fought the lump of panic in her stomach the only way she knew how? anger. ?You too chicken to go first? Is that it!?

?That?s not it. If I go first that man will make a grab for you.? Sousuke calmly explained.

?Oh.? Kaname blushed in embarrassment. She was about to agree when a thought occurred to her. ?Aren?t you worried that creep will just shoot you if I go first??

?That is a possibility.? Sousuke nodded. ?But it?s a chance I?m willing to take.? At Kaname?s wide-eyed look he continued. ?If I am hit. You should take the light and run as fast as you can. That tunnel will lead you to the surface and you should have enough of a lead. He won?t be able to catch you.?

?No! I won?t do it!? Kaname insisted fiercely.

?You have to!? Sousuke insisted. Why were they arguing about this? ?The important thing is to get you back home. That?s all that matters.?

?Don?t give me that!? Kaname hissed. ?I know what you?re thinking! You think your going to be all cool and noble and stay here to hold off the bad guy while I make a run for it!? At his stunned look she knew she was right. ?Do you think I?ll be grateful or something? Well you can forget it!? She jabbed him in the chest. ?I refuse to let you throw your life away! I?m not doing it!?

?Shut up!? Sousuke yelled and shoved the girl against the wall. He jabbed the muzzle of his weapon under her chin. ?This isn?t a game.? He growled.

?Y-your going to shoot me.? Kaname dropped the light she held when the boy shoved her. Sousuke?s face was obscured by shadows and it gave him a sinister appearance. She swallowed at the deadly calm of his eyes. In that moment Kaname realized Sousuke really was a professional soldier and not some wanna be freak. ?You?d kill me just like that??

?Yes. Better off dead than in their hands.? Sousuke spoke earnestly. His throat tightened as he recalled images of the girl he rescued in Kahbarovsk. Suddenly his palms were slick and Sousuke found it difficult to breath. Had they stumbled upon a pocket of gas?

?It?s okay. I understand? Kaname whispered. She could feel the uncertainty radiating from Sousuke. She reached up with one hand and gently pushed the muzzle away from her chin. Her other hand reached up and traced along Sousuke?s jaw. ?But you have to understand something. When the pain and fear became to much, the only reason I could go on was because of you.?

Sousuke gasped and lurched back. His weapon hung loosely from his hand.

?You can?t tell me to leave you behind.? Kaname kept her hand on his face and followed Sousuke. ?I couldn?t make it on my own. So please don?t say that.? They stood in the middle of tunnel. Kaname smiled and stroked his cheek with her hand. ?Let?s go back home together.?

?Kaname.? Sousuke felt a thrill at her words. He had no idea what this sensation was but it was extremely pleasant.

?Sousuke.? Kaname smiled and stepped closer. The glow stick cast a gentle glow over them. She craned her neck up and starred into his eyes. Sousuke?s head lowered and only a few inches separated them. Kaname eyes fluttered closed when she saw it. A flickering red dot danced along Sousuke?s head and his shoulder.

Sousuke?s head snapped up and he tried to raise his weapon. Standing twenty feet away in the middle of the corridor was a smiling Gauron. His pistol was aimed right at them. The Mithril sergeant cursed his lapse of attention. He would not be able to bring his weapon up in time.

Several things happened at once.

?Sousuke!? Kaname cried out in fear and acted. She shoved the boy away from her as hard as possible. Caught off guard by the action, Sousuke fell back and Kaname stumbled forward just as Gauron fired. Kaname?s body jerked as the bullet from Gauron?s gun slammed into in her back and she collapsed on top of Sousuke.

At the same moment Sousuke squeezed the trigger of his weapon and sent a spray of bullets hurtling toward Gauron. When he started falling, Sousuke instinctively tucked his chin in and managed to avoid smashing his head on the stone floor. However, his shoulder was cut badly on the sharp rocks.

Gauron dived for cover behind a narrow set of stalactites. He avoided most of the bullets but one tore thru his sleeve and another grazed his shoulder. Pain flared in the shoulder. However, the mercenary grunted and ignored it.

?Kaname!? Sousuke cried in shook as she fell on top of him. Ignoring his own injury he rolled the girl over and starred in horror.

His hands were slick with her blood.

The Devil Inside-Glossary of Terms


MCMJ -Mithril Code of Military Justice. Basically the legal code and rules of conduct all Mithril personal are subject to.

CO - Commanding Officer (This is actually used by the US military)

MCF- Mithril Correctional Facility. Most ships and bases have their own brigs or jails, but those are only designed to keep a prisoner for a short period of time. The MCF serves as Mithril?s more permanent jail. It?s used to hold those who are awaiting their hearing or trail, and for those who?ve been sentenced for longer than a month, to a maximum sentence of a year or two.

MDC- Mithril Detention Center - basically prison. This is where Mithril throw's their hard-cases and long terms sentences. It's a great place where you get to spend twelve hours a day making little rocks out of big rocks. Sounds fun doesn't it?
Basically, think of it as Mithril's equivalent to Ft. Lebonworth.

Old Man - just an affectionate way the soldiers of Mithril have of referring to Kalinin. Of course, they'd never address him like that!

LP/OP ?Listing Post and Observation Post.

FARP ?Fuel And Rearming Point. It?s a forward staging area combat-vehicles (such as an Arm-Slave) can use without having to leave the combat zone.

Mikes ?short-hand for minutes.

ETA ?Estimated Time of Arrival

Hawkeye ?Refers to a US radar plane. The Hawkeye usually flies ahead of a US naval task force (among other things) and gathers useful information about the area and reports it back.

AS- Arm Slave. Ya know, those big freaking robots Sousuke and the others pilot.

SRT- Special Response Team. Sousuke, Melissa, and Kurz are member of Mithril?s SRTs. The way I look at it, the Special Response Teams are Mithril?s equivalent of Special Forces. They do many of the same tasks as special forces: Recon. Infiltration. Sabotage. Lightning raids, Hostage rescue, and assorted other tasks.

MOTC ? Mithril?s Officer Training Course. Most military organizations have additional requirements for their officers besides just time in service and demonstrated ability. Most officers under go specific and grueling training and are usually required to have a four year college degree of some kind.

M9- Called the ?Gernsback? it?s the AS used by Mithril. Considered the next generation of AS.

M6- the AS used by the US Military.

RK-92- Soviet era Arm Slave. To quote Sousuke. ?Move you Soviet-made piece of Junk!?

Ninety-six- refers to the ASG 96-B manufactured by Bofors. It?s a 57 mm smooth-bore rifle and part of the M9?s standard armament. It?s the rifle Kurz used in episode five during his duel with Gauron.

NCOIC- Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge. It refers to the highest ranking enlisted person within a unit. In the case of Crispin?s orders it refers to Melissa.

DI ?Drill Instructor. Another way of referring to a Drill Sergeant.

SitRep- Situation Report. Basically a quick run down of what your situation in a field (or combat) environment.

WA2000- very high-quality German sniper rifle. Considered by some to be one of the best in the world. It?s only down side is its weight. (16 lbs) and cost. It?s highly customizable and sleek in design. It seemed appropriate for Kurz to use. Though I think the one he?s actually shown using is a PGS-1(another German rifle). I?m not certain.

Tac-Net- Tactical Network. A radio network set up and used by members of the same unit during tactical (i.e. combat) situations.

HE- High Explosive.

Fifty Cal ? short hand for fifty caliber. Which is the size of a heavy machine gun. A machine gun this large must be mounted on a tripod or vehicle in order to fire it. A fifty caliber round is about six inches long and can tear a man in half, and it can also destroy trucks, light armored vehicles and buildings.

NVGs -- Night Vision Goggles

EOD ? Explosive Ordinance Disposal

FTX ?Field Training Exercise.

Gunny- Short for Gunnery Sergeant. It?s an advanced NCO rank in the United States Marine Corps

Shiwa Statue ?those Lion statues you?ll see in front of temples and important buildings. There supposed to be guardian spirits and they are very prominent in Okinawa.

Klicks- short hand for kilometers
