~~ After Colony 200: Earth, Relena?s Office ~~
?Are you sure, Relena?? The query came from the Asian woman of Preventers leaning back on the plush armchair at the side of the large oak desk.
Relena Darlian, the former princess of the Sanc Kingdom, smiled at her bodyguard, friend and confidant, and replied firmly, ?Yes, I?m sure, Midori.?
Midori frowned and leaned further into her chair. ?Your brother would not approve. He would say that it goes against your beliefs of pacifism.?
Relena?s annoyance sparked. ?What does my brother have to do with this? I gave up pacifism four years ago.?
?Your brother is my superior. He would not be pleased if his sister was injured in any way while undertaking this project.?
?And since when, did you, Preventer Retribution, fear anyone??
?I didn?t say that.?
?You didn?t, but it sure sounded like it.?
?I suppose it did,? she agreed, ?but I cannot bear the whole weight of the task myself. We will need the help of others.?
Relena propped her head on an arm. ?Yes, I see your point. What about asking Sally or Wufei to help??
Midori pondered the idea. ?Perhaps. Sally would have no problem with this, but Wufei?? She made a face. ?I will need to?discuss?the matter with him.?
Relena?s seldom heard laughter was the reply to that statement. In a hidden corner of the room, a head jerked up at the sound. Dark, intense eyes focused sharply on the sandy blonde-haired woman and her dark-haired companion. ?She hasn?t laughed like that in a very long time? Being Vice Foreign Minister has taken so much out of her??
Midori inwardly grinned; the tiny movement hadn?t gone unnoticed. She knew exactly who was in that little inconspicuous corner. Composing her face, she added, ?And I suppose ?discussing? is putting it lightly, ne??
Still trying to recover from the previous joke, Relena managed to say, ?Yes, very.?
?Time to let the mouse know it?s been spotted.? Midori thought devilishly. Taking on an innocent face she inquired, ?Relena, have you found any leads yet as to where Hiiro Yui might be??
Hiiro Yui, a.k.a. the person in the corner, was heavily inclined to bolt from the spacious room that very moment. ?Kuso, I?ve been spotted? Again!?
?No, why?? Sadness permeated the answer. Relena?s gaze fell on the little brown teddy bear that sat at one corner of her desk. It had round black buttons for eyes and a red ribbon was tied around its neck into a bow at the front. After all these years, she still kept it knowing that its sender would someday return. ?Hiiro??
Midori shook her head, sending ripples down her long black hair. ?No reason. Just curious.?
Relena glanced up at the clock on the far wall. ?It?s almost 3; we should start heading over to the conference hall.?
?Of course.?
The two rose from their chairs, Relena exiting first with the papers she had snatched up from the top of her desk. Just before Midori left, she turned to the corner and smirked triumphantly. <You?re losing your touch. That was far too easy.> Then the door clicked shut.
Hiiro groaned and leaned even harder on the wall. ?Why did I decide to come back? That bodyguard of Relena?s always manages to spot me no matter what I do.?
