This Is How It Is

by Jooles

Rating: PG
Summary: Not a Heero story. A dull! Relena monologue, and a realisation of happiness with another !person!.
Author?s Note: This just wrote itself. My OTP continues to be Heero and Relena, only this just had to be written. Forgive my incompetence.

***

This is how it is.

You wake up.

You have your shower.

You dress in the clothes you laid out the night before.

You have breakfast; - white toast with honey.

Pagan makes you your coffee; - black with three sugars.

You run out of time between listening to the news on the radio and checking the weather forecast on the television. Not that knowing the way the weather is going to pan out is of any importance to you. You only spend your days inside; in your office, in meeting rooms, in auditoriums, in limos, anywhere else, but outside.

You?re a little bit late. One minute and twenty-five seconds to be exact. Pagan?s called for you twice, but you?re busy draining the remaining drops of your coffee mug.

Pagan?s waiting in the limo, the engine running, when Trowa who?s arrived escorts you to the backseat.

You sit in a comfortable silence as the journey is made from your mansion to your office. You share the newspaper on the drive to work. He reads the sports section (not that he really cares), while you read the main section.

You spend the first part of the morning running over urgent matters at hand. The second half is spent in a meeting so frustrating you consider offing yourself as the comparison of being stuck in the meeting one minute longer would probably do seriously delirious things to your mental health.

You break for lunch. Well, fifteen minutes: - - a ham sandwich and another cup of coffee. You don?t feel like your apple so let Trowa eat it. He twists the stem off of the apple, and you can tell he?s playing the A-B-C-D game. You ask him what letter he got, and he cringes, realising that you?ve been watching him. You drop the conversation.

You spend another half hour in the meeting which you now think is equivalent to serving purgatory. Finally, you leave, heading back to your office where you work through a mountain of paperwork. You?ve become very good at signing your name at the relevant point in the numerous legislation.

It?s half six when you finally finish up. You?re not entirely finished, you never really are. However, you have a dinner party to make by seven, and being there is all important. They?re relying on you. Counting on you.

The dinner is forgettable. You do remember that the black dress you wore that evening was one of your more elegant outfits. The bachelors in attendance were salivating the moment you entered the door.

Trowa, escorts you back to your mansion. He?s as quiet as ever.

You ask him, how his day went; and he answers you as required.

You part ways when you arrive outside your suite. He takes up guard duty on your floor, and you go to your bedroom.

You?re meant to go to sleep. It?s a good time to go to sleep. You?ve had such a big day - well, not really. It?s been quite a regular day, well for you anyway. Only, you can?t sleep. You don?t feel like it.

You pull on a dressing gown: - flannel, long. It looks like something that?s survived an age. You really have had it for ages. It?s one of the things you can?t give up. It?s comforting.

You?re in the kitchen, and too soon he is too. He quirks an eyebrow at you.

You ask if he wants a cup of tea which he shakes his head at in response.

"But if you could make me a coffee I?d drink to that."

You smile. Ever so slightly.

He drags out a stool, and you pass him his mug.

You sit in a silence, so comfortable, you?d think you two were married.

He asks you how your day went, and you tell him; "Oh, it was the usual".

He doesn?t smile, but grimaces in response.

He understands.

All of a sudden, the tiredness, the sleepiness you were missing before, it comes over you. You yawn, and he reaches across the tabletop, and touches your hand; - a reminder that he?s still there.

"Time for bed?"

You nod, appreciatively.

He escorts you back upstairs, and you say goodnight. He returns to floor duty, and you to your bedroom.

Before you close the door, you watch his retreating figure, and realise that this is it. This is what you want. Only, you think you?ve had it all along. You realise, that you may have been taking this all for granted.

"Trowa!"

He pauses, just as he?s about to turn the corner.

Your breath draws inward, as he turns to face you.

And you know.

And he knows.

And now that you know, and he knows that you know; you both are reconciled.

"Please, come here... come back."

He does.

And you look up at him: - he?s always been so tall.

And you tell him, "I think something?s happening."

And he tells you, "It hasn?t yet, but it will in a second."

A second passes.

And then he kisses you.

And it?s wonderful.

And this is how it is. Only, it?s been this way for a while, and you?ve been too preoccupied to notice it. Which is funny in itself. You mutely wonder, in trepidation, how you could have failed to notice something as simply and purely beautiful as this. As him.

You pull away from him, although you want him to kiss you again. He leans his forehead against yours and tells you something you?re so surprised to hear that you?re only support are his arms around your waist.

And then the shock secedes. And you understand.

"Why me?" You ask him. You?re still so shocked.

He leans in closer. So close that even though your foreheads are touching (which makes that pretty close); - so close that now all you can see is his eyes; as green as jewels and hills and pasturage and meadows and all things natural and memorable as they are. They?re like a mirror transporting you into a dream world, a wonderland. And Trowa Barton is your wonderland.

This is it. This is how it is. This, you realise with a sense of finality, this is how it?s going to be from now on.

You pull him in closer, and press your lips first to his brow, than his eyelids, his nose, and finally on his mouth.

"You and me," you tell him, "This is how it?s going to be."

And he smiles wholeheartedly, for he?s in complete agreement.

And this is how it is. You, Relena Peacecraft and your bodyguard, Trowa Barton; together. Just as you always were intended to be.

I like it!!
I think that, out of sheer perversity, I've come to enjoy fics that have Heero and Relena with someone else. But this is one of the nicest ones I've read. Thank you for posting it!

This was a great story. This is another pairing I love. Trowa and Relena could work. I especially liked the part where Trowa was playing the Alphabet game. I remember doing that when I was younger.

Did you say this was dull? :o I think it was beautiful. Well, okay I'm biased because anything that mentions Trowa is beautiful but that's a whole different matter.

Anywho, I just thought I'd tell you that I loved this fic which wasn't dull but rather more like an appointment book with something to look forward to at the end of the day. At least that's just me. :D

I just love Trowa and Relena together. It?s my second favorite pairing. Loved this story, very sweet, and it?s funny how you fall in the rutine that you stop paying attention to little details. Beautiful.
