(Poem) Castle In The Sky

Post by Lara Winner »

Castle In The Sky

In the vain fantasy of our youthful days

we acted court jester in simple amusement

to be invincible was an expectation

nothing was too outlandish for reason

because we made the rules as we went along

playing house in our make believe castle

was it a dream

or was it the reality we tried to see

handing us the crooked keys

unlocking the doors of complexity

throwing caution to the winds of chance

that when observing from the watchtowers

the impossible seemed insignificant

like a grain of sand in an hour glass

for there was little that could not be made

to fix the jaded contradictions

preventing all that threatened our optimism

to fall in the backlash of mockery

so that we did not have to face

what we did not wish to know

and as you held my hand

I said growing up was for the weak

and if we just believed

our game of pretend would never have to end

it was our story

our own fable in the making

you played the king and I played the queen

governing our kingdom of make believe

thinking the future was a grand production

a pageantry of the legends we would create

and in these tales of once upon a time

slaying dragons was an easy feat

such a small price for the maiden?s blush

upon the bloody sword of her shining knight

and I loved you as I would a prefect illusion

all you offered was never questioned

and in good fashion you played your part

chivalrous and loyal

without prompting demands and oaths

making the fairy tale complete

as in the pages of the books long since forgotten

yet happily ever after was still only fiction

had we foreseen the fall of our empire

was the game truly as splendid as memory suggests

that in our innocent meanderings

we found ourselves longing for the magic

that would make our reverie substantial

perhaps we should have tried

instead of building our castle in the sky

was youth to blame for our naivete

or were the ideals we shared

lacking the substance of heart and soul

determination can not motivate alone

and you gave up your throne

without ever looking back

but I still remember

when you crowned my head with flowers

and gave me your smile for a sweet kiss

did the toad become a prince

I thought I knew long ago

but the mirror told a lie

when asked if you would love me forever

and on the other side of the looking glass

would our tragedy remain the same

the queen of hearts would have our heads

if she knew the mayhem of this love

and now I?m standing upside down

confused by your mad riddles

in one breath you speak of reason

and in the next there is desire

but these thoughts are not for me

I?m only the shield that protects you from truth

and when the clock strikes twelve

you?ll still be my love

though I may as well disappear

should I laugh

or should I cry

now that the magic has come and gone

It?s no longer easy to believe

that I could chase down every rainbow

or even cross the bridge of mercy bound

and as for the ball I lost in the pond

it was never gold just tarnished brass

it was childish creativity

to think the myth would last

in the silent gardens

of the world you left behind

I?ve grown dizzy

walking in circles should not be this hard

if we loose our balance

we fall down in the ashes of what once was

I don?t suppose we could pretend

that there is one more page to be written

I?m not asking for forever

just until the morning light

Would you

Take this chance one last time

and come to our castle in the sky

A.N. - This angsty little poem was written because of young love. You know what I'm talking about, that first crush that is so intese you think it's love and it will last forever, even knowing it won't because it never does. Ahhh... This an ode for those bittersweet memories!
Do not measure life by the number of breaths you take but rather by the moments that take your breath away.

Some things belong on paper, others in life. It's a blessed fool who can't tell the difference. - Madeleine "Quills"

I know exactly what you mean... My crush (who also happens to the first. First, dammit!) was the one who inspired a whole set of poems (three of which are posted on this site, but one has been altered...slightly. :D), and they were all angsty. *sigh* Aphrodite's gonna be in deep trouble when I get through with her....

*shakes her head* Life hasn't been smooth sailin', I can vouch for that.

^_^ Anyways... Wonderful poem! Those written straight from the heart are always the most significant and beautiful!!
?I always know you?re about to say something very sweet or very stupid when you use my full name??

Why yes, I am a saucy wench. :-P
