All's Fair in Love and War :Chapter Five

Slipping into a black dress, Relena admired herself in the mirror. Her long blonde hair lay on her shoulders unbound. Trying to fix a few strands that wouldn?t obey, Relena frowned.

If she thought she hated banquets a while ago, she hated them even more now. Ever since talking to her brother, she hadn?t been able to keep her mind from jumping to conclusions. Suddenly a strange look meant an assassination attempt, and she found herself ducking at the strangest things such as a pounding fist onto a table.

?Get yourself together, Relena. It can?t be them! They want peace as much as you do?. But, strangely, this thought didn?t seem to comfort her as much as it should have.

After arriving at the Sanq Kingdom earlier this morning, she was a little unnerved by the incident on the shuttle.

As the memories came back to her, she blushed. ?Perhaps I shouldn?t have?? She shook her head. ?Would have attracted even more attention if I hadn?t.? Grinning to herself, the former Queen was glad she still had it. ?Although, I thought he would dodge it?, as she winked at her mirrored self.

Twirling a bit, Relena was satisfied. She grabbed her bag, and raced down the stairs.

Her black limo waited outside for her, and she threw herself into the vehicle. ?Step on it, Pagan.?

The old man eyed her in the rear view mirror, and quirked his eyebrow. ?Feeling better, Miss Relena??

Smiling, she replied, ?Just a bit.?

Relena walked in with as much grace as she could muster. She almost bowed at her dramatic entrance, until she realized no one was looking at her.

Relena blinked, dumbfounded. Recovering quickly, she sighed and walked towards the uninviting crowd.

?Ah! Minister Darlian.?

Relena looked over to find a colleague smiling at her. He offered her a drink. Being polite, she smiled back and accepted it. ?Its nice to see you here, Mr. Brooks.?

?Likewise.? He continued smiling, until Relena backed away. She eased herself through the crowd, greeting everyone she knew. Relena found the nearest garbage can and poured out the drink. ?Too suspicious.?

Her wary glance not picking anything else up, she returned to the inner circle, oozing with intelligence.

But she found that more often than not, her words of wisdom were ignored. Even flat out ignored. Fuming, she excused herself and went to get a drink.

?This is unbelievable! I?m going to get to the bottom of this,? she thought, catching a reflection of her in the window. She blinked, and then broke into a grin. Clad in black, Relena felt like James Bond.

She had seen old films from before the colonies were built, and took a certain liking to suave men in black suits. Confidence regained, she glided over to the bar.

?What can I get for you, Minister??

She looked directly into his eyes, and smirked. She murmured, ?A martini.? Pausing for dramatic affect, she added, ?Shaken. Not stirred?

The man stared openly at her and stuttered, ?Of course.?

Waiting for her drink, Relena glanced around the room. A group of men she knew very vaguely had formed a tight circle, and every few minutes one would glance her way. ?Hmm.. so whomever it is has people on the inside??

?Here?s your drink, Minister.?

?Ah. Thank you,? she nodded her head and started off. Looking down at the mixture with distaste, she decided just to hold it for show.

Relena headed towards the back of the room, feeling she could get a better view with fewer distractions. But her keen senses picked up on a rustling behind her. Trying not to panic, she turned away from it and looked deep in thought.

?Hmm.. smells like gunpowder, I wonder why.? Smiling, she spoke as quiet as she could, ?If you want, I can turn around so I don?t see you.?

The noise stopped immediately. A cold voice hissed from behind her, ?Outside. Now.?

Covering her mouth by pretending to take a sip of her drink, Relena spoke again. ?And why do I want to come with you??

?Because I said so.?

Relena scowled. ?Wonderful answer.? Sighing, she said ?Fine.?

The voice grunted, and left. Figuring no one would notice her absence; Relena waited a few moments before following.

Outside, Heero stood and stared at her. Relena walked over to him, taking her time.

Noticing the black eye, but also a few other bruises. She frowned asking, ?What happened??

Heero looked away. ?Nothing.?

?Er.. sorry about earlier,? she said, blushing a little.

?How did you know it was me?? he demanded.

?Two can play at this game.? She turned towards the edge of the balcony, trying to be mysterious.

?There are only two people I know who smell like gunpowder,? she whispered. ?And one of them is my brother.?

Heero blinked, taken aback. He noticed the drink in her hand, and frowned. ?A martini??

Blushing, she looked back at him. ?Just for show.?

?Hn.?

He felt the gun in his pocket. Scolding himself for forgetting his job again, Heero stared at Relena.

Knowing where this was heading, Relena frowned and put her brilliant idea into action.

She walked over to him, one step at a time. Heero stared. She almost looked.. seductive. Soon she was close enough to him to feel her breath on his cheek.

Heero opened his mouth to say something. Grinning, she placed a finger on his lips and softly whispered,

?You can tell me next time.?

With that, she ran over to the balcony. Pausing, she blew him a kiss.

As she jumped, Heero lurched forward.

Looking frantically down after her, he cursed, ?The balcony was 5 feet off the ground! What kind of game is she playing??

Relena, still in heels, hobbled off towards her limo.
"The point is, you see," said Ford, "that there is no point in driving yourself mad to stop yourself going mad. You might just as well give in and save your sanity for later."

We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing - Beyond the Sea

Heh.

It's funny how James Bond is known for the whole martini bit when the original line is very different. Just goes to show how things get "improved" upon by pop culture.

It's a good thing, though, because it lets Relena have some fun and makes Heero all confused.

Good times. :)
