The Line Was Busy


She had paced around the same spot on the well-carpeted floor in the spacious living room eighty-seven times in the past hour,and she did it without ever stopping for a break. Resting was the last thing on her mind when she had no desire to cease fidgeting with her slender hands before she drill a hole on the floor. Any spectator had to gave praise to the floor?s strong endurance, but whether the strength could prevent future sufferings of the carpet, there was great doubt. The blonde haired girl was suffering too, obviously from other means than being stepped upon like the carpet. From time to time, she would throw her hands up into the air in frustration, irritation and exasperation,or something among those lines. Then she would scream a silent scream and sigh in desperation. Not far from her was her friend sitting on the couch, watching her little performance in equal amount of annoyance, except this dark haired girl?s vexation was directed at none other than the torturer of the carpet.



? Would you please stop pacing on the floor, Relena!? It was not a request but a demand. ? I really do pity the carpet. It has done nothing to deserve a punishment like this.?



? How can I stop? Hilde? I?m so confused, and I?m frustrated at my own confusion.? Relena shot back at her friend.



? What?s to be confused about? You like? excuse me. You love him, so you should tell him. He has a right to know.? Hilde spoke the fact.



? I can?t tell him. I don?t know how. I become inarticulate every time I try to confess my feelings to him. I just can?t.? She explained her problem.



? I say that you are afraid. Yep, you are afraid to tell him because you think he won?t reciprocate your love. Am I right?? Hilde grinned.



? No, I?m not scared to tell him, it?s just I can?t say the words that I want to say.? Relena shook her head.



? Then you are too proud, your pride won?t let you make the first move, and your subconscious won?t allow you to sacrifice your pride. You want him to admit his feelings first, don?t you?? She smirked.



? I? no, it?s not that either. I just don?t know how. But I wouldn?t mind him admitting it first though.? She smiled innocently.



? I knew it, you are just too damn proud to do it. You know, just because he is a guy that doesn?t mean he must make the first move. Remember, he is not your average guy. If you won?t go first, then it?s probably going to take a million years to crack his shell. He does own a larger ego than you. Think about it, if your little pride is this hard to let down, then how will you get him to let down an ego that?s 100 times larger than yours.? Hilde was getting impatient by the minute.



? In that case, I have to make the first move. But I can?t. I told you already, I can?t do it. I don?t know how.?



? Yes you do.?



? How? Do you want me to go up to him and say ? Heero Yuy, I love you, would you marry me?? Well, forget the latter part.? Her face blushed a deep shade of crimson.



? Actually, that?s exactly what you should do. I think I?m going to try that with Duo. Thank you , Relena.? Hilde said rather gratefully.



? Hey, this isn?t about your problems with Duo. It?s about me ok?? Relena brought Hilde back to the subject. ? I want to tell him, really, but I just can?t say those words to him.?



? Why don?t you try it first. Relena, tell me why do you love him? You can do that, can you?? She asked her friend who had finally sat down on the chair opposite of the couch and left the carpet alone.



? I can do that.? She cleared her throat. ? In the beginning??



? Hey, I didn?t say that you should start from Genesis.? Hilde cut her off.



? You want to listen, don?t you. Then stop interrupting.? Relena continued. ? In the beginning I wasn?t interested in him at all, well at least not in a romantic way. I simply admired his strength and his strong will to achieve his goal, which was peace. I realized that he has a strong heart that he was willing to sacrifice his life for the good of the others. He was fighting for the whole entire human race. He fought so others don?t have to. He went through inhumane trainings just to fight for us, and he didn?t want any compensation. He was noble, kind, just, and unselfish. I didn?t even know such a wonderful human being actually existed in this world until I met him. He was an inspiration to me. When I was in trouble or feeling weak, I would ask myself what Heero would do in my situation, and that he would stand up and fight to the very end. I was able to learn from him the art of fighting battles, except my battle field existed in the conference room, and my weapons were words rather than Gundams. And I tried to fight for the people just like he did. It was not until I got to know him better after these past seven years since the war that I finally became his friend, that I later fell in love with him." She paused and took a sip of water from her glass on the table. " Well, I love him, and to answer your question I don't really know why I love him. I just do, it's just this gut feeling I've got that I can't really explain. One thing is for sure, I don't think I'll be able to live without him." She stopped and sighed. " You know what Hilde, maybe the reason that I can't tell him how I feel is because that I'm afraid of losing his friendship. I'm being stupid, am I? But I don't want to ruin what we have now. It's not easy to be a friend of Heero Yuy, you know."

" I know, wow, I just didn't know you felt that strong for him. You really do love him, don't you?" Hilde stared at her friend with concern, but a grinned came up to her face slowly as she thought of an idea. " Relena, call him, just call him right now and tell him. If he really is your friend he wouldn't let this ruin your friendship. Tell him that you love him, if he doesn't feel the same then at least you'll know, and we can finally stop talking about him." She jumped up from the couch nearly running toward Relena and dragged her to the Vid-phone that was placed on the left corner of the tea table.

" Dial the number, Relena." she gave the command.

Hesitantly, Relena picked up the phone.



At the same time somewhere in a small gloomy apartment a similar situation was dealt with, but the role of the carpet torturer was switched between the two occupant of the tiny living room. Ironically the friend that needed help was sitting rather calmly on a wooden chair, and the helper was in the process of pacing a hole on the carpeted floor. The helper seemed to be suffering more than the one who needed help. He cursed silently at the silence fashioned by his ever so quiet friend, who looked like a statue made of stone. Finally, the helper gave up on the pacing and sat down on a chair opposite of his friend before he let out an exasperating sigh.

" Come on Heero, just admit that you love her... sorry.. that you LIKE her already. " He said to his expressionless stoic friend.

No response came.

" You are afraid, aren't you. You are afraid of rejection. But let me tell you something, buddy, she is crazy about you. Any idiot can tell that she loves you...um.. she LIKES you A LOT." He said.

Again, no response came.

" I can't believe you are actually scared of this. Well, at least now I know that I'm better than you at handling relationships." He grinned widely.

" Shut up Duo." An answer came.

" Good, you are finally talking. That's a good sign." The grin just got wider.

" For the last time, buddy, tell her that you love her." He repeated.

" Why?" Came the question.

" Why not?"

Silence.

" Fine, I give up on you. But tell me why you love her first." Duo switched his strategy. ' I hope Hilde is having a better luck than I do.'

Silence.

" OK, tell yourself why you love her." Duo was out of ideas.

" I don't know."

" Well, what do you think of her?" Duo asked, trying to get something out of the silent soldier.

" I always thought that Relena was stronger than me." Heero said.

" Good, and?"

" And that she was able to bring peace without using force or staining her hands with blood." Heero actually continued this time. He was preparing to give the longest speech he ever had to make. " There was a time when I thought of her as my rival, and I almost competed with her on our methods of bringing peace to the people. She always seemed to take my enemies away from me. I guess we tied at the end, peace was achieve with both methods, and that both methods were necessary. So I decided to protect her because she was vital to our era." He paused trying to say the right words. " Duo, the people love her, I might as well love her, but I don't LOVE her." He wasn't confused by his own contradiction.

" No, you do love her. I've seen you two together. Although you are just friends, but I can tell that both of you feel the same for each other. You are just too stubborn to admit the truth." Duo tried to convince his friend.

" No, I can't love her. I have too many enemies to ever get her involved." Heero justified himself.

" Heero, who are your enemies? Remember the war is over now."

" My enemies are those who want me dead. There is no way I'll drag Relena into this hell with me." He said.

" You give yourself too much credit. I'm sure that your enemies have more important matters to deal with in their life than thinking about how to kill you. They have a life, Heero, and I think it's time you get one too. Your enemies are probably enjoying a quiet dinner with their family as we speak. And I think it's time I should go get something to eat myself." Duo said with amusement in his eyes. " You know, maybe I should go become the great Guru than the God of Death."

A familiar silence.

" Heero, just answer me this question. Would you die for her?" He became serious.

" Any time."

" There, you love her. That's the prove you need."

A short silence passed.

" Now, you go call Relena right this moment and tell her that you love her." Duo picked up the vid-phone and handed to Heero. " Call her, now." That was a command.

The reply he got was a glowering, hateful, angry, long, belligerent, silent, death glare.

" I'll just ignore that look. Now, you call her, think of it as a mission. You have to do this sooner or later, so why not do it now. Call her and say 'Relena I love you, would you be my girlfriend?' " Duo gave him the phone. " Start dialing now."

He dialed the her number reluctantly.

Somewhere in the city, she dialed his number.

He waited.

She waited.

Duo watched.

Hilde watched.

Heero hang up the phone.

Relena hang up the phone.

A moment later.

" So what did you tell her?"

" What did you say to him?"

" The line was busy."

A/N: This was an old story of mine. As you can see, the plot is quite cliched and the grammar is just plain awful. Still, I like it.
