Chapter 3 - A wedding and a funeral

Thick dark gloomy clouds gathered in the stormy sky; bitter dusty winds cried out in sorrow as they chased after the withered fallen leaves of autumn; the heaven suffered with the lonely bride on her wedding day, the day of her love's funeral. She stood by his grave in her simple yet elegant white dress with her golden tresses cascading down her fragile shoulder, listening intently at the minister's holy words. She recited her vows of love in a soft yet firm voice as the final rights were given to his spirit. She took the golden band from Duo, gently slipping the ring upon her finger with a trembling hand. Hilde handed her the bouquet of purest white roses and embraced her supportively comforting her. Relena kneeled down to the ground ceremoniously and placed the roses against her late husband's tomb stone. Her eyes watered instantly and she tilted her head up toward the sky trying to hold them back, but tears of sadness spilled out without control. Everything was silent as the phantoms of the graveyard grieved lugubriously with the woman in white in a world of darkness.

A few feet from the grave, he watched helplessly at his only sister's agony. Instinctively he tightened his grasp on his wife's hand drawing strength from her. It pained him to see his sister abide such a torment. His lovely wife, Noin, glanced at his somber face and sighed, shaking her head not knowing what to do but witness the scene just as helpless. Memory of the last confrontation between the obstinate brother and sister hung in her mind. She knew from the beginning that he wouldn't be able to convince her to call off the wedding.

" Relena, you are not thinking clearly. You can't go through with this." Milliardo spoke pleadingly to his sister.

" No, I have made up my mind, no one not even you will stop me. I have had this conversation with too many people, and none of you seemed to understand. This is something I have to do for me...and Heero." She was tired of the argument.

" Relena, I came back here from Mars' colony to attend a wedding; I expect there to be a groom." He reasoned with her. " Heero is dead. You are crazy wanting to still marry him, you are mad. I won't let you go through with it, you are not marrying a dead man and that's final!"

" Milliardo, you have no place to intervene with my decision! " She snapped. " You are not going to stop me. I'm no longer a child, I know what I want. I want to take on Heero's name for the rest of my life."

" Do you really think that Heero will be happy if you ruin your future by being his widow?" He questioned her. " Do you? Relena, if he truly cared about you, he wouldn't have gone on that last mission which resulted in his death. He had known about the risk and he went anyway." He didn't mean for those harsh words to come out, but it was too late.

" How dare you judge him like that, Heero cared and loved me. " Anger rose in her voice.

" You never liked him or approved our relationship, and now you have the guts to insult his love to me after he is dead. How dare you! "

" No, Relena, I didn't mean anything like that. I respected Heero, and I knew you were the happiest when you were with him. I just couldn't believe he would gave up on life that easily if he had you to live for. " He explained.

" I know, but for now, please let me go through with my decision. " She pleaded in a whisper.

" I just don't want to see you hurt, Relena." He said in defeat.

Milliardo let go of his wife's hand and sauntered up to his sister, hugging her gently letting her release her anguish on his shoulders. This was the only thing he could do to help her, comfort her. He had to be there for her. It was his responsibility to look after her since Heero was dead. She's strong, a little too strong maybe. He thought.

Sitting nearby Noin, the young woman clothed in black shook her head in disapproval. She never thought that Relena would throw her life away for something as trivial as love. She was after all a politician. She was born as one and reared as one. She should have known better.

" This has to be the least admirable decision she has ever made in her life." Dorothy Catalonia whispered to her companion to her right. " As symbolic as this ceremony might be, it's still completely futile, not to mention the consequences if the press ever gets a word of it. She is acting too much on her impulses."

" I think that You should be more sensitive at a time like this, Dorothy. We cannot even begin to understand what she's going through. Just remember how you felt when your father died and you'll know what I'm talking about. " Quatre Winner replied without looking at her. " As for the press, I have already taken care of them."

" What I say might be out of line, but it's the truth. You know as well as everyone else here does that she's making a mistake." She defended herself. " Relena is a very intelligent person, but she would rather be a lovesick idiot when it comes to Heero. I'm not saying that she shouldn't mourn over his death, she should, everyone should, but this is not the way to solve the problem. I know it's hard to move on, but that doesn't mean you should just throw your future away." She paused and stared into Quatre's eyes. " I have great respect for Relena, but this is not one of them."

What she said was right. He could not refute her words.

A shadow stood away from the bride and her family, watching the agony silently and retreated back into the void as the ceremony ended. There was only one thing he had to do, a confrontation with the dead groom. Her sufferings were too much for him to bear even if he was only a friend to her, though he did secretly wish for more. He was drawn to her like everyone else around her, by her kindness, purity and strong will. His only regret was that she chose Heero instead of him. But he didn't mind, he only wanted her to be happy even if he wasn't the one for her. He was content to just watch her from afar, and he knew that Heero would take very good care of her, they belonged together. That was why he was going to confront Heero despite his usual indifferent nature because it pained him to see her dying in her misery.

Hospital was the last place he wanted to be at, but he had no choice in his current condition. Heero sat in the wheel chair by the window staring out into the far distance. In his hand was the necklace she gave to him, and it was the only thing left he had of hers. Relena...His thoughts were disrupted when the door was opened and a tall dark figure made his way into the light.

" Trowa." Heero greeted him.

" Heero." He nodded back.

Silence past between the two quiet man. Both of them were never good at words.

" She got married to you today." Trowa said expressionless.

" I know, Duo has already informed me about it earlier." He replied. " Why are you here?"

" She's suffering." He ignored Heero's question.

" I know, and I'm sorry." He lowered his head as if in shame.

" Is that all you can say? That you are sorry? I don't think sorry is enough to heal her pain." Trowa's tone was emotionless. " Do you know what she just went through? She was married to a dead man in a cemetery on her wedding day."

Silence.

" Do you think that that was her dream wedding, at a grave yard?"

" What do you want, Trowa? You were never the one to care so much about other's problems."

" Are you satisfied?" He asked, never betraying his raging emotions with his calm voice. " I know that I have no right to say this, but are you happy with your decision? Are you?"

" Trowa, leave me alone. You are starting to sound like Duo. " He was tired of the accusations.

" It's time to have someone knock a little sense into your head. How can you stand seeing her suffer in pain?"

" I can't, but I have no choice." He sighed.

" So you'll keep letting her live in your lie? Is that what you want? Running away can't solve your problem. You should've known that by now." Trowa no longer could understand Heero.

" Temporary pain is better than long term suffering, it's the only way." His voice was hoarse. " I hate this as much as she does, but she doesn't need me around as a burden. She deserves a perfect life, not a life with a invalid like me. "

" So everything is because of your pride and your imperfection? Is that your motivation for throwing away your life and ruining hers in the process? Don't you think that's very selfish of you?" Trowa questioned him. " Heero, I admit that Relena is strong, but even she has her limit. A woman can only be pushed so far, sooner or later she'll break down."

" No, she won't. She'll forget about me, and she'll find new happiness. I'll only be a memory of the past." He tightened the grasp on the necklace.

" You really think so?" His tone was rather derisive. I almost wish that you were right, Heero, because then I would have a chance to be by her side. But both of us knew that she would only choose you at the end even if you were truly dead. Please don't give me a chance that I could never take, Heero.

" No. But that's the only way." Heero replied with his eyes closed as if he were hiding from reality.

" Then you are wrong. She'll never give herself to anyone but you. You'll always be the only one for her. No one can replace you." Not even me, Heero. No matter how much I feel for her, she'll love you forever." I hope you will happy, Heero, because I know she won't." And I won't either. Don't you get it Heero? If you fall, we'll all fall behind you. He glanced at his stubborn friend one last time before exiting the hospital room. Even if you have given up on her, I still couldn't have her, Heero.

Trowa, why were you here today? He tried hard to block that obvious answer from his mind, but his efforts were in vain.

Heero... She looked up into the night sky, still gloomy even after the rain had stopped. The moon and the stars were absent, hiding behind the black clouds, not wanting to guide the lost souls home with their light. She wondered if he could see her in the heaven above, keeping his vigil on her from afar. Maybe he was still on earth, searching his way back to her as a ghost. She was almost certain that he would find a way back to see her one last time, angel or phantom. She didn't care what he had become, as long as he was there with her. More tears dropped onto her face like the rain outside that had just started again. The widow of Heero Yuy slept alone on her wedding night.

Relena... That was the last thought on his mind before Trowa was taken over by a dreamless slumber.
